If the backfield is the main point here, then I'll just say, do you take a back who can clearly contribute, and who might well crack the two-deep depending on how JCC and Trey start out the year? If, God forbid, JCC's brilliance down the stretch last year was a flash in the pan, we'll need able bodies behind him ready to step up. Between Shai and McMillian, Shai is the one who has been there. You'd want that experience available if one of the top two backs goes down or hits a slump.

But what if Shai is already confident? By all reports, he's ready and eager to get back on the field. And the reciprocal to the conditioning argument above is the threat of rust after a year of relative complacency. Now this would be another conversation with Marshawn, who will be returning from ACL tear halfway through the season. Conditioning will be a big factor there, because he won't have done summer conditioning and would be dropping straight into live game situations. But Shai has come back gradually, and looks great in practice. I don't think there's any reason to be concerned he isn't in proper football shape.

I'm not sure that is in the spirit of the question

I guess that's my whole issue with hypotheticals like this. What is the question actually asking?

If we trotted that 2007 defense out onto the field today, it would get burned by some modern offenses.

If we took that personnel and played our current defense, I don't think that roster would be as adept at it because they weren't recruited to play that scheme.

Is it asking me if I wish it was 2007 again instead of 2015? No, I'll take the post-Stinespring era every time.

Just based on the "spirit of the question," I'll take the 2015 defense, because that's the one I'll watch throttle anOSU on Monday.

This settles it. Someone needs to do a version of Bane's mask in maroon and orange and make that their shtick at games, in the vein of Leonidas of Blacksburg or the maroon fro guy with the lunchpail.

As great as the '07 defense was, it was still a firm base 4-3 defense, well suited to the era but woefully outgunned in today's game. I'll take the nickle today, no questions asked.

And just to clear it up, you can't really go the route of "I'm just talking about personnel," because you can't ignore scheme. If you tried to play nickel with the roster from '07, I don't think it translates well. We're built for the nickle in this era of #DBU.

Step one: Make check payable to Illinois Hokie...

No, seriously, send the check to the address on the support page:

I'd imagine make the check out to the LLC rather than to Joe, for tax purposes.

It comes down to whether the knee is healed or not. If Shai is cleared for football, redshirting won't make him any "more" healed. That's just not how ACLs work.

You can argue Shai should redshirt because we have enough backs available, but that's another conversation.

These schemes all fall apart once the defense has the offense outnumbered at the point of attack. Simply put, if Bud Foster wants to take away the interior rushing game of Ohio State he can do that. Once he does, Urban Meyer will have to rely on his quarterback and wide receivers to beat the best man coverage secondary in the country at its own game.

When this happens, I look for UM's strategy to be to pick on Facyson, since he's returning from injury. And if Facyson is truly 100%, I look for us to have a very good night.

Nice spot check, sir. I admit, my entire comment was based on an assumption he meant significant playing time. If spot work will do, there are several programs where he has a shot to see the field as a true frosh, and we are one of them.

^^^^THIS^^^^

It's not just us. If he's playing early, he isn't playing for a winner. I think it's an issue of all kids their junior year of HS think, yeah, Imma set the world on fire in college, just gotta find where I can get on the field. I expect immediate playing time will slide down his priorities totem pole the closer he gets to deciding. Or else he will really regret his decision because of the dire straights of a program that needs him to play freshman year. (See: Us, last year.)

Did Shai get a medical hardship waiver? Was he in under the wire for that? If so, he's a R-Fr this season. That means if the knee holds, he's a R-Jr in 2017.

Marshawn, if he redshirts this season, is also a R-Jr in '17.

Travon McMillian, R-JR in '17.

Deshawn McClease, JR or R-So in '17 depending on a redshirt year.

Coleman Fox, ditto.

RB recruiting yet to be determined for this cycle. If we sign an RB, he'd be either a So or R-Fr in '17.

This kid would have to be spectacular to jump the number of players necessary to see the field his true freshman year, and it would still be a longshot as a R-Fr.

Right, I get that. My point was, go back and watch tape on how Bud schemed against you guys vs how Narduzzi schemed you guys. Formations were somewhat similar (not really that similar) and that was about it. Our defensive assignments were very different from what Narduzzi assigned his defenders.

Narduzzi, for whatever reason, did not sell out to stop the run. Maybe he didn't trust his secondary, maybe he expected trickeration. I don't know. But Michigan State played you guys significantly differently than Bud played you. In fact, NOBODY tried to do what Bud did against you. They would come out in the Bear front, but they wouldn't play gap fill defense and leave their corners on an island.

As a Buckeye fan, this reminds me of Pat Narduzzi and Mark Dantonio's comments before last years game. However the Hokies have much better corners than 2014 MSU

With all due respect, that's not a valid comparison. VT will bring a schematically distinct defense to the field compared to what you saw vs Michigan State. While the formations might appear similar, assignment and scheme will be completely different, as french can illustrate way better than I ever could.

There's a reason why our defense was the only one able to stop your offense last season, and it isn't entirely inexperience at QB and OL on your part.
