Yeah, but Lawson and Jackson both have better tape, IMO. If Lefty's going for a mobile QB with a pass first mentality, just based on HUDL, Park would be low man on the totem pole. Lawson has a stronger arm, Jackson looks more accurate throwing on the run.

I dunno how he'd fit. I understand Lefty going for this kid hard when he got here just from a best available mindset, but Lefty has definitely trended toward mobile QBs and away from pocket passers. Not sure how Park would fit the system now.

If JJ verbals to us tomorrow, I'd bet Park goes elsewhere.

Weaver kept us in the black at all costs, and it nearly choked the life out of the football and basketball programs. Whit might take us into the red, but I'm okay with deficit spending so long as it is approached as part of a multi-year investment strategy.

Where will the money come from? Two places: ESPN, and putting asses in seats. The ESPN thing is a done deal, a countable cash flow. The other part only happens by reenergizing an apathetic fanbase. The way to do that is to improve the product on the field and on the court, and the way in turn to do that is to bring in recruits. It's an investment.

No, it's not sustainable, but understand we're in a period of transition. The Power Five conferences are essentially emerging as a new top tier of college football, the culmination of the BCS era, and now more than ever you DO NOT want to be left behind. That means during this era, you do always strive to make every upgrade you make the absolute best in the entire country. It won't last forever. It can't. But while it does, those who do not remain competitive with other P5 programs risk being left behind.

As for not breaking the bank, is it broken? We're operating in the black, and have for years.

School is getting more and more expensive, with a lower and lower ROI (varies by major and university, yes). Something has to give. If this is to be avoided, schools will make drastic changes to improve quality of education without major changes to the consumer cost. I'm not sure how likely this is.

IMO, we're going to see government subsidization of education expenses, and we're going to see it soon. Just about every western nation is outpacing us in this regard.

The point is, actually being able to claim the "biggest" at any point keeps you relevant. You'll never stay on top in this ascension to the Power Five era, not for long. It's like buying the most badass computer you can get your hands on. Six months later, someone is going to buy a better one. But yours is still a monster. We shouldn't have a mindset that we have to maintain the biggest/best/sexiest/swankiest facilities, just that when we do decide to add/upgrade something, we should make it the best in the country. There's nothing to worry about when someone comes along and builds a bigger IPF. That's guaranteed to happen. But we'll still be the reason they did it.

I disagree. Glennon was best when the ball came out quickly. He had the height, arm strength and accuracy to deliver a quick throw over the middle on a slant route. But that was firmly during the era of "we prefer play action to slants" in Blacksburg. Beamer was afraid of the potential for interceptions with throwing over the middle. Ironic, actually, when you consider all the slower-developing deep stuff was where Glennon made the bulk of his mistakes.

I can see that really hurting Nebraska, because I don't really think of that school as a research institution. I think our research focus puts us on better footing to not need to count those research dollars in order to be accepted into AAU.

Whoever said they have to be OSU season ticket holders? OSU fans who want to attend the game at Lane can purchase season tickets from VT for $350, with no further contribution to the program required, or they can buy them in StubHub for $300. If they're in the market for tickets to this game, buying season tickets and selling the other five games might actually be the cheapest proposition.

Didn't Kumah tweet that he was verbaling sometime in June? Can't find the embedded tweet now.

EDIT: Never mind, I found it in a separate thread. June 19. He tweeted that back in April, though. Any idea if he's sticking with that date?

StubHub is already at $300 a ticket minimum, with the majority of available tickets at a higher price than season tickets at face value. It is already at the point where buying season tickets and selling the other five games is at least a break even proposition, and might wind up being cheaper.

When Chip Kelly took over from Mike Bellotti, I distinctly remember all the media attention on what large shoes Chip Kelly had to fill, and there was a bit of a prevailing thought that no coach could have the success Bellotti had, because he really made Oregon football relevant. People forget how meteoric Oregon's ascendancy was.

So let me ask you this: do you believe that QB recruits would shy away based on the assumption they can't beat Lawson in a fair competition, or based on the appearance that he's heir apparent? Has hiring his high school coach made it look too much like the table is set for him?

If I'm a 4 or high 3 star QB and I'm considering VT, I watch Lawson's film and decide whether or not I think I have a shot to win a competition with him. There will be some recruits who nope out on that, but surely there will also be some who say, yeah, I can take this guy.

I LOLed, but Ol' Sourpuss loves to pull a bullshit 30 yard bomb out of his bag of tricks at least once a game against us. I assume he does it against other opponents, too. I'm surprised he hasn't worked up a trick play B-back pass off the pitch. He should also roll the pocket on every pass they attempt because it would just look like a standard play up until the QB throws it.

You might well be right. There is no definitive way a buyout has to be structured. But even if they just had to pay his his current year's salary, the state of finances in the UVA athletics department probably are dire enough that they aren't going to pay two coaches' salaries, especially if the AD knows he's going to have to pony up next season to bring in a coach capable of fixing this dumpster fire. Then again, maybe the culture of losing is so ingrained at this point in Hooville that we'll get a James Johnson type hire.

If you're gonna disallow rub routes, you have to disallow jamming receivers within five yards of the LoS, in my opinion. Clean is clean.

How about on true offensive PI, the yardage penalty is the inverse of the spot foul? If it occurs 30 yards downfield, it's a 30 yard penalty from the LoS?

Okay, so you're saying, for example, that you're only proposing a rule change for a player who is in the process of being tackled while crossing the plane. A clean reception for a touchdown in the endzone is an immediate touchdown and end of the play. But just like that receiver has to maintain possession during the catch, the ball carrier has to maintain possession all the way through the tackle into the endzone.

I don't have a problem with what you're suggesting. I think changing the rule to how you're proposing it would actually have very little impact on touchdowns. The fumble rule would have huge implications, though, and might lead to a more pass-happy game, since running plays become riskier propositions. A receiver losing control during a catch results in an incompletion, but a ball carrier losing control during a tackle results in a fumble. I'm not sure the result of your proposal is actually what you'd want to see happen to the game.

If they fire him midseason, I think they still have to pay him his buyout. I think they're all in with London this year, and will be conducting the coaching search behind the scenes throughout the season. Expect to see some true dysfunction out of that program if they do start ohfer for a long stretch. We talk about coaches losing the locker room; Mike London might not have the locker room to start the year.

I've heard this a few times lately. London is gone. We need to accept that the only reason he was retained this season was financial reasons. He won't be back next year unless he shocks everyone (including the UVA athletics department) and goes on the most improbably championship run since the move Major League.
