I agree with you in general, but Tre Turner is a true freshman, and it would be really hard to recruit much "better" than him. (0.9273 composite rating on 247.) I know, coaches are accountable, yadda yadda yadda, but sometimes players are gonna drop catchable balls. Even NFL receivers do that.

Also, my original point stands. If you're admitting it's a larger "coaching" issue, what in-game adjustments are you saying Fuente and Corn should have made?

"Hey, Tre, next time, try not dropping the ball, mmmkay?"

I just checked and that's exactly what it is. We scored almost exactly our season average against our FCS opponent from each year, so eliminating them doesn't change the mean. We scored way more than our average against W&M, and have only 7 total results thus far vs 14 and 13 respectively, so it really skews the data when it's eliminated.

And Fuente specifically called that out as the most frustrating thing about the game for him. To have such offensive success out of the gate only to have it dry up like it did for that stretch is a head scratcher. Then again, Tre Turner isn't going to always have those freshman dropsies, and Kumah's P.I. penalty, while drive killing, was because he was doing everything in his power to get open for his QB (which turned out to be a little bit more than the rules would allow.)

Sheer brilliance. I agree with every word.

However, for the sake of context, just to address this:

Well, this week we are playing against a BC team that is 6-2, 24th in nation rushing and 23rd in points scored. (VT is 64th and 83rd respectively)

VT is 83rd in total points scored, but 43rd in scoring offense. The discrepancy comes from the fact that we're one of the few teams that had a game cancelled due to the hurricane.

I'm fine with smaller DEs if they play like House and T. Hill. Where we really need size is at DT. Look what Settle and Walker gave us. We were 15th in the nation in run defense. That's also the third time in the last ten years we've been top 15 in rushing defense. The other two times were when we had DTs like the Hopkins brothers and Luther "Four Point Stance" Maddy. I don't think we need a scheme tweak to win against the run. We just need good DTs.

Well, no. He was the backup for a reason. You just mentioned wanting to see development, and I'm really pleased with the development I've seen in Willis since he became the starter. Also very pleased with the development of the OL in Fuente's three seasons. It's gone from probably our biggest liability to one of our better assets on offense.

To be fair, Ryan Willis probably looked the best against GT as we've ever seen him. I was really impressed with his play, especially with mistakes from his receivers basically killing three different drives. I couldn't have asked for more out of him.
