I'm heading into Thursday fully expecting a loss. Not being a pessimist, I just see a lot of factors playing against our favor. Having all our linebackers playing their first game against the flexbone is a recipe for disaster, I expect our corners to be out of position against all 4 of GT's pass attempts, and I don't trust Willis to make the right reads consistently to take what the Bees are giving him.

Having said that, I prefer going into games like this expecting a loss, because it's hard to be disappointed and a win feels that much better.

Man I love the CFB belt. It's a shame the website died. It couldn't have been that hard to keep that geocities webpage afloat.

I've never been quite clear if the football section is about all football or just VT football

I just wanted to say how much I love that a thread lamenting how our program is "just an intro" has turned into a thread about making our intro more awesome.

At this point, I see JJ and Willis as basically interchangeable. They're both going to leave yards and points on the field, JJ by being too timid, Willis by making bad reads and forcing bad throws. Both are good passers and seem to be capable QBs. We aren't going to get the efficient offense we want with either of them. Switching between them is basically just switching between two different forms of frustration.

This was the specific line I was responding to:

He got in the way more than he blocked

I know with your edit you basically were admitting it was a block, but then you immediately drew a line between "getting in the way" and blocking. Wasn't trying to yell, just saying you don't have to throw a Wayne Ward block for it to be a good block. I actually don't want receivers throwing high impact or sustained blocks too often for fear of injury. Getting in the way is often enough.

Gimmick offense coach mad when teams have time to prepare for his gimmick...

After three games, I'm pretty well convinced what most people are complaining about as bad play calls are actually Willis making bad reads and hamstringing what Corn can actually call. The RPO is basically gone, and the only reason the zone read is working at the moment is because opposing defenses still refuse to respect Willis as a run threat. That's going to change in the next couple of games, and I don't trust Willis to make the right read once defenses starting cueing on him.

It's no coincidence that the criticism of the play calling got a lot louder after JJ went down.

I can't remember the specifics, but it was lifted from a thread about the future prospects of ACC teams. The guy basically said the Foster/Fuente pairing had no chance of success and VT would be slowly circling the drain.

Willis is a JJ who is overconfident.

Or JJ is a Willis who is too timid.

Either way, we haven't had appreciable dropoff going to QB2, but he's going to make some mistakes that put our defense in some tight spots. He'll (hopefully) balance that out with some drives like that masterpiece to take the lead.

My concern is they those miraculous drives are going to prevent him from learning from all his mistakes.

A clutch game winning drive by Willis, which was necessary due to a game full of bad reads and ill advised passes by Willis.

Wasn't on the game thread live, but I can tell you in retrospect, every time TKP was criticising Corn's play calls, I was lamenting Willis's inconsistency in making the right read. He's leaving a lot of yards on the field. But he was clutch when we needed him to be, and that goes a long way.
