I think it's too late in the game for Motley to pick up another position. Durkin has his entire career ahead of him.
These are almost always granted. The application process has become a bit of a formality.
I think a position change is in Durkin's future.
Actually I'll agree with him. For a long time, especially during Hite's tenure, it was almost like a union shop: seniority rules. It was a pretty big shakeup in 2004 when all the young receivers for bumped up to starting roles after the NC State loss.
Still blocked like a QB though...
And we were at a disadvantage recruiting QBs in the Stiney era because our QB coach wasn't our OC. That's a bit of a rarity in college football, and I have no doubt other programs tried to use that against us in recruiting. Now QB recruits know their position coach is calling the shots.
Actually, no. Just a stated opinion, and a pretty prevalent one.
French, I said in another thread I thought Tim Settle would be ideal for the nose tackle in this dime look. If he can consistently eat two blockers of the snap do you think his presence will nudge Bud toward employing this look more against the pass-happy teams we face?
Okay, now you're accurate. Your original post didn't specify you were talking about the team scoring points. Reads like you meant the QB didn't score any points, which is actually a pretty common occurrence.
I'm almost 100% certain this isn't true. I think we've had multiple games where our only points came off FGs, rushing TDs or defense/special teams scores.
EDIT: I also don't think QBs get credit for scoring the points on TD passes so I'm going to guess a majority of our games end with a QB scoring zero points.
I'm not sold that we've lost Cager.
My prediction on the depth chart:
- Brewer
- Motley
- A. Ford
- Durkin
- Lawson redshirts
With Motley and Ford being more like 2 and 2a.
2016 QB competition should be interesting.
Love the first one. Shoving his own blockers out of the way.
Love the confidence, but will be shocked if that happens. Lefty runs a very complex system. Michael Brewer came in and did okay with it on short notice, but he had three seasons of experience at the D1 level under his belt. The complexity of the scheme plus the speed of the college game would be one hell of a mountain for a true freshman to climb. I wish this young man all the luck in the world attempting it.
Clark and Settle are 1 and 1a in my book. Both with have a fundamental impact on their respective lines.
Yeah that's what I was trying to say. After 99, I'd say that VT was actually perched a bit higher than Florida on the national totem pole, probably about where Oregon was a few years ago when they lost to Auburn, so that particular rejected offer from Bud's past was more about the money.
In 1999 the SEC was not the hype-o-tron that it is today. Still a very good conference, but just five years after that, an undefeated SEC school got left out of the BCS championship game. Could you see that ever happening in today's environment?
Don't get me wrong, it's awesome that Bud stayed. Just saying in historical context it wasn't the mighty SEC yet. The raise was probably a bigger deal than the conference, but also VT appeared to be a program on the verge at that time.
Lawson is a huge get. I love seeing the QB coach get his guy. Now Lefty has a few of his handpicked recruits to choose from in the post-Brewer era.
Also, anybody else getting the sense that Gaines is now all-in for the Hokies? His tweets since his verbal have been increasingly enthusiastic. Maybe experiencing firsthand the difference between how programs are run had made him see himself at VT.
Couldn't we offset this with TE slants? Seems like Brewer would have an easier time seeing Bucky, Malleck and Cline over the middle. Do we just not trust the TEs to run those routes?
Or a boy scout.
Went 2 for 3 on this huge recruiting weekend.
And now to flip Cager.
Starfox always always ALWAYS gets a leg.
I love flipping recruits from other programs. Let's see if we can't manage that one or two more times this cycle.
Let the frantic refreshing begin.

Yeah I was just adding there's no real reason to worry it won't be granted. I stopped worrying about hardship waivers after DJ Coles was granted one. I think he kept practicing with the team all season, just wasn't 100%. I was worried the powers that be might say since he practiced it wasn't a legit season ending injury, but it was approved without comment. So apparently there's a lot of leeway given in interpreting what constitutes season ending.
