okay okay I actually read the piece. I mean, this is basically saying VT has a 12% chance of being a top 10 team. If you figure that there is a normal distribution of potential outcomes, with the median being 6ish wins for this team... then sure, a 12% chance of winning 10ish regular season games sounds about right.

I floated it for the first time in a canoe, with a tiny gas motor. An hour into the trip, the wind started to blow upriver in what turned into 25 mph or so sustained winds. We couldn't fish much, and finally decided to give up and motor out. Worked great until about a mile above Whitethorne when the motor ran out of gas. I'd foolishly not brought extra, having never needed more before. We paddled and paddled and paddled and paddled. Finally got out and we agreed we'd never do that again. I was with a burly guide named Chuck Kraft on that float, and even he couldn't make headway on that same portion of the float. We tried to switch places so he could rest for a bit, but by the time we switched places, I couldn't regain what we lost in the switch, not being Chuck, a powerful fellow. Finally we got into a creek just above the landing and he could rest up for a few minutes, then we made the ramp. For beauty, my favorite float is Ripplemeade to Bluff City. I've run it hundreds of times over the years, and though I've floated almost the entire river, I still rate it my favorite. Let us know if you go.
B12 is also pretty interesting to watch on any given weekend because they actually have parity and some entertaining personalities. A large portion of B1G, ACC, and even SEC games are pretty pointless.

B12 is pretty solid IMO because no one wants their 'flagship' programs (unlike the ACC). What's the most prestigous/valuable/whatever brand in the current B12? one of the Kansas schools?
I think the surprise best option, were the chips to fall this way (and I don't think they will) would be for the P2 to completely separate themselves into a semi-pro league, creating a vacuum for the rest of the teams to rebuild something similar to what college football was 30+ years ago.
When this happens, it won't be the whole P2. SCar, Vandy, Illinois, Indiana, etc aren't getting that invite.

There's so much variation year to year in CFB with transfers and constant coaching changes, who the hell knows what's going to happen. Outside of a dozen or so teams that are always good, it feels like a crapshoot to me.
WVU not being a mainstay OOC game is criminal to both programs IMO.

This. I am so disappointed that the USCe game is not a home and home. Especially since I live within shouting distance of Williams Brice.
I think the consolidation of the top brands (not even teams but brands, JFC) from the SEC and BIG is the most likely scenario. VT will not be part of that. So that leaves making a new college football where maybe we can have regionally coherent scheduling and actually enjoy the week to week again. The money divide is going to force this to happen in my opinion. $30M programs will never be able to compete with $75M programs. Any given Saturday and all that sure, but game after game, season after season. It's a new league and we are not fit for it. That's sad but also something that can lead to a new better sport from a competitive standpoint longer term.

I think if we had moved to the SEC in 2010 that would have been the best possible option. Going to the SEC now would still be preferable, I think, but we would become an instant doormat and I'm not entirely sure the current administration would know how best to spend the sudden injection of cash we'd have from the better deal. After the SEC the B1G is preferred option 1b. I think VT can only survive in this football landscape by being in one of the two power conferences. After that, staying in a dysfunctional and dying ACC is probably honestly the 3rd best option. The league sucks and is dying but it's going to die slower than other former power leagues. PAC12 already met it's demise. Big12 can't be far behind with the departures of their flagship programs to the SEC. ACC is held together by scotch tape at the moment but it's more than the other leagues have, so there's that.

If the P2 somehow implodes and eats itself alive that could be a huge opportunity for non-P2 teams to re-invent college athletics. I think a lot would have to happen just right for this to happen so I don't think it will. But wouldn't that be cool?
Knowing our luck, we'll get into the P2 right before said implosion happens and then 10 years after joining we'll somehow find ourselves in a worse place than before.
that might be true but it just reinforces entitlement which I think has caused a whole lot of other issues but that's a discussion for another day (off-line)
It's not the numbers that are the issue. It's the situational management of the players.

I love Pry, but his situational awareness on gameday is Mike Londonesque. He's is downright bad and not getting better.
Watching college O-Lines, especially VT, over the last ten years since the prior game, made me a lot more forgiving of the "broken logic" for the O-Line in CFB25. VTs O-Line is pretty realistic.

I'm located in far SWVA, about 2.5hrs from Blacksburg. For a quick smallie fix I usually hit the North Fork of the Holston, which seems to be a great fishery for its size. The easily accessible spots get hammered hard in the summer though. I'm also only about 20 minutes from the Clinch, but it seems to not have the same size class of fish as the Holston.

I haven't done Pepper to Whitethorne in probably 10 years. It is tough, and I've come close to getting in real trouble at arsenal falls and the shoals at the burning grounds in a jon boat. Great fishing though, and it's a beautiful float. The intake on the right just above the falls used to always hold a good fish or two.
It's a NASCAR that he's too big to fit in.
Which sucks, because I don't want to see us play Ohio Technical College or directional TN/MI colleges. As a fan of CFB, I loved having big names like Wisconsin, Michigan, PSU, etc. on our OOC slates. It really sucks that the race to the playoffs has cheapened this aspect of scheduling.

# | All future games at ODU canceled - 2028 game in Blacksburg also canceled I think just about every Hokie prefers to be in the SEC, but would gladly "settle" for a big 10 invite if it meant we could avoid a dysfunctional ACC or a Big12 void of any identity.
I honestly think this plays into recruiting. I think what number a kid can get may weigh on their decision where to go. If they have been number 8 all their lives and this is in their twitter handle, for a team to tell them they can't be that number certainly carries negative connotations. I'm not saying it's right, but with the way we're trending in CFB we will do whatever we can to satiate potential players.
And as other have noted, this is not a VT issue. We're likely in the middle of the pack regarding duplicate numbers. Our issue is that the coaches can't set up squads for each phase of the game without somehow making sure there are no duplicate numbers. If you're on the punt team, you can't have the same number as someone else. Is a starter hurt? Make sure their replacement is not a duplicate number 2. Seems feasible with the number of coaches and assistants on the sideline. Give me a sideline pass and I'll do number QC.
And we only have to hold onto him for 16 months to signing day. What could go wrong?
