Meh- Louisville buys a new team every year and they are better than both VT and UVA.
Pry bungles literally every close game. Every one. If people think he is the "coach" to turn around a major program in this era, well...
The parity in this league is increasing, and it will be really hard for this program to make a sharp turn up.
this line confused me - if there is more parity, wouldn't that mean the teams are more even (regardless of whether they're getting better or worse" making it easier for UVA to be better than they have been (which is to say that they have been so bad that they can't keep up with any one, really)
first of all, these rankings are mostly meaningless. secondly, if you did the same exercise for just the last 10 years I don't think VT would be top 40. It's incredible how far we've fallen since 2010
Whit should have fired Fuente waaaaaaay back in 2018. When he didn't, we probably should have cleaned house then. Hindsight is 20/20, as they say, but I think firing Babcock in 2022 after he failed to do anything with Fuente after the signs were pretty clear that he was driving this program into the dirt probably would have been the right move. Alas, we're stuck with him. Pry is going to fail (perhaps due to no fault of his own) and I don't think Whit should be allowed to hire his replacement. When Pry fails, it's going to be Whit's failure more-so than Pry's and we should tear it all down from the top. I don't see this happening, of course. I think we, as fans, had just better get used to not being very good at any sports because we're falling further and further behind by the day and I don't see any reasonable path to us catching up any time soon.
I'm glad it was only that. Initially, I thought he died 😬
Sad but true.
Dabo made the bold moves necessary while we dragged our feet. He took the gamble on the young, unproven at P5 level, coach in Chad Morris who revolutionized their offense, with his back against the wall (he was on a scorching hot seat after 2010, and the AD tied his fate to betting on Dabo). People often point to Venables (who came a year later) as the big reason, but as someone who grew up in SC and was a freshman at Clemson in 2011, that is BY FAR the most hype there has been around the program in my lifetime. It was a shot of adrenaline that jumpstarted their ascendance.
Then they made another big move in going for Venables, plus they had established their plan of sniping talent from surrounding states whose programs were relatively down at the time (Georgia, Tennessee, Florida schools, NC schools, VT, etc.) with a modernized recruiting philosophy.
There are several publications that had us in the 7-9th range of top programs of the first decade of the 2000's, so this makes sense given that era is still carrying the majority of this ranking on its back.
Sensing a theme here? Declan Sullivans parents didn't sue Brian Kelly for millions because they prefer to beat USC in football. Go Blue is much much more important in western PA than pedophilia. If people in Mississippi would donate to their high schools instead of Go Rebels, kids in that state could read a book.
It's not even that... I thought that recruits would blackball a program that was (best case) ignorant/negligent about a pedophile in the building (worst case... complicit/enabling). But they land a 5-star QB the year after scandal breaks... just wild to think about. I can't imagine sending my kids to play at a program where a pedophile ran freely.
Oklahoma will give up like 2 runs the entire world series- if that. There is your preview.
And totally why I'm totally not watching.
A suburban team that 90% of people on the street would think was a lacrosse team if you said their name is going to win back to back Stanley Cups.
LMAO- when Dresser left, Whit gave Robey a take it or leave it low ball offer with 24 hours to sign it. Lucky for Whit, he took it.
Meanwhile random Virginia mens golf team is in the mix for a championship. Last year a dogshit NC State team was 2 wins away from one in mens hoops. You have to try to be as bad at sports as VT is right now.
Things are not looking good for my Stars right now. They have only played one good period in the entire series so far.
Virginia Tech/BOV is giving Babcock the Fuente treatment now... Going to realize in the future that the firing was 1-2 years too late.
Sands can go pound sand too.
I was impressed with her first year. I hope that she continues on that success. Granted it was a step back from previous years but at the same time it was basically a brand new roster put together over the summer. She also doesn't seem like she is slowing down in getting to where she wants to be with the roster.
Oklahoma wins again. At home. Totally not boring.
Correct - the ultimate bullet proof program. Although Baylor hoops won a national fucking title after a player murdered another and the coach covered it up. They and Penn State should have been banned for 50 seasons, but money talks.
Cornell lacrosse did the impossible yesterday- won a national championship.
I think dcwilson would have a point to make about how winning never costs too much...
Scheduling conflict for Jimmy Smits

We should move on from Whit right now. Let the new AD set some clear expectations with Pry and (and possibly allocate resources accordingly) get some time in the seat before making the next hire. Summer window seems like the right tone to make moves at the top.
