Just finished that interview. Pop said a lot of things that make me think he's pretty firmly a VT, especially as long as Bowen is here.
Just watched a little of Bob Shoop's defense at Tennessee. It had some similarities but isn't quite a match. Like Bud at the end, Hamilton, and Pry, he struggled to get good fits at linebacker with the Vols.

VT is at a level that they can recruit to Pry's scheme if the coaches can teach it and the players buy in. But, you can't recruit athletes and then fit them as square pegs into round holes. Pry has to find a stud WILL, a lockdown corner, and a safety. The only fits he found have both come from the portal (one dimensional edge rusher + a legit one gap defensive tackle who has enough lead in his pencil to not be washed out of the gaps.) Now both those pieces are gone.
2) If Pry makes a change in scheme, it will take time to turnover personnel from scratch. He doesn't have that time.
3) When the scheme change comes, it will be for a new head coach who is being given the time and resources to turnover the roster faster and more effectively than Pry has.

I thought he laid it out pretty straight:
failure to make adjustments (Marve); gassed late in the game (Galt); more than just what you see on the field, i.e., relationships, development, recruiting (Crook).
And...more "shuffling" coming (new DC will likely have some latitude re: hiring and staff responsibilities) as well as internal candidates for all positions (bowl audition?).

Pry needs to find someone that doesn't put a guy built like a wide receiver in at inside linebacker and expect to fill gaps. I can't criticize Lawson as he tried very hard, but that was a round peg in a square hole.
The blitz schemes from marve were not effective, and would hope that the new coach could be better at this. Also, be able to make adjustments at halftime would be a plus for this team.
My completely blind, uninformed prediction is that they try to swing for a bigger name, miss, and end up picking Bob Shoop out of unemployment

# | actual football peeps: ...should Pry try to find a Pry.sys gap-spill-fill systemic fit? I'm wondering how much influence Brent Davis had on our OL. If little, maybe he should get a shot. He was a very successful OC at previous stops Army, GaS, and VMI.
Definitely think it's an issue. But one thing that Pry and no one else brought up is maybe the defense was gassed by the third quarter because of being on the field a lot due to stalled drives/3 and outs by our offense. Bowen's offense is feast or famine. It's not necessarily efficient and can't usually grind down the clock when it needs to, but when it's humming he can put up points and explosive plays. That's my big concern - can this OL and his offense give us a more reliable and consistent run game when we need it to give the defense a breather and run clock?
Pry feels strongly that the better conditioned team wins the close games. Didn't feel like the team was well-conditioned enough at the start of the year and at the end of games.
This is a really good point. I was somewhat surprised to see Galt let go, but this makes a lot of sense. There were many reasons for our late game collapses, but conditioning probably didn't get talked about enough. If Keli Lawson is in a bit better shape, maybe he doesn't try to arm tackle Cam Ward around the shoulders at the end of that game
It can be done. But the DHMO thing is funny when people get all up in a fuss.

As a specialist surgeon, I can agree that medicine pays well but it's not going to be the person donating millions very often. I'd bet a business school would be better from donor standpoint because the business people will occasionally hit it big while medicine people are 10 years behind the eight ball when they start making money and rarely end up with the extreme wealth of the very successful business owner.
1. VT's offer was best and final at the time.. they are not going higher
2. VT's offer may have been rescinded entirely and he's not welcome back
3. IF he comes back hat in hand, AND VT takes him back... who is to say he doesn't get a smaller offer from VT?

It's insane that our defense and special teams averaged nearly 6 points per game. Imagine having that now.

If you listened to the Sons of Saturday podcast with Pop, I'm not that surprised with both staying. It seemed like they are pretty close and Pop wasn't expecting to start until Drones was gone. He said his goal was to get to second on the depth chart this year, which he was sad in how it happened but grateful for the chance. Pop just seems like a really good dude who just wants what is best for the team.
Whatever happens in the future, this is unequivocally good news for the Virginia Tech football program today.
The athletic did an article last year showing that a little over 80% of FBS transfers in '22 and '23 made it on another team. That's not bad, but that means last year about 700 players either stopped playing or dropped down to a level of play that the recruiting services don't follow. It'll be way more grim this year with the roster limit changes IMO.
I'm not giving a floor for first-year doctors. I'm talking typical / average/ common salary.
in 2023 the average doctor pulled in $350k
but you're correct - my floor is too high, as I gave a range that depends on specialty. PCP/Family care average in the low 200's. But my top-end was also too low. Neuro's average $920k for example.
So let me revise that to "doctors pull in $200-900k depending on speciality"

my question is this
in the portal era, do you think it's possbile to turn over the roster more quickly than what you're used to? Maybe a homerun hire could bring in a dozen or more day one starters that fit his scheme and get them ready to at least be competent on day one.
