Which is why I was very surprised when tech made the decision to gut BB for FB. Smaller amount can still have a significant impact on BB.
Lets be honest, how much of the downfall of modern society can be laid at the feet of social media. It really seems like nobody thinks before they say or type anymore. They also need to remember the media lasts forever and can haunt you years later.
We should build on recent momentum, go all-in on WBB, buy a goated roaster, and finally get that elusive natty.
To the original post, we could make the decision that many mid-major programs have and that's to focus on basketball. That would go over like a wet fart in church with the fan base but the reality is it's much easier to fund a program that has 13 athletes than it is 105 athletes. Even making the decision to fund both basketball teams, that's still just 30 athletes. You could pour the focus on the top 5 or 6 to really accelerate being competitive.
Pitt did it a couple years ago to an extent under Capel after the 21-22 season where they went 11-21. Since then they went 24-12 and 22-11. They are 9-2 to start this season. They didn't even make a full on investment and they flipped the script.
Notre Dame and several other ACC teams have made heavy investments in women's basketball and it shows. Ten of the top 40 teams in women's basketball are ACC teams.
It's just much easier to do if you fund it correctly in all phases of the program.
Found Craig James's TKP burner account.
yeah, VT is completely pickle-fucked here
It does happen elsewhere and I am sure there is some level of tune out but this offseason seems to have reached a higher pitch and quantity here at Tech. Much more noticeable and from the most followed "voice of the fans" accounts. Gloom and doom and sky is falling before this staff has had a chance to fill holes. If this staff has done one thing well its been identify performers in the portal.
Look at our offense this year.
Drones, Tuten, Schlee, Lane, Jennings, Felton and Stephen Gosnell all came to the Hokies from the portal. Gosnell was before Pry's time. That's about 80-85% of our offensive production.
Defense you had Peebles, APR, Brumfield, Gilliam and Kemari Copeland. Four of those guys were Top 15 in tackles and every game contributors.
We have had two, maybe three surprise entries into the portal but with the money being thrown around by other programs can you blame an 18-22 year old for testing the waters when there are potentially 7-figure paydays out there?
I don't know if this is going to be a long-term success for UNC, but I know with near certainty that it is bad, bad news for VT (and NCSU and UVa and maybe even Clemson/GT). They are going to clean up on the recruiting trail, more so than they do already.
And the infrastructure he's putting together is likely going to lead to a lot of success on its own next year and going forward. A journalist here in NC FOIA'ed the 400 page manifesto. I hope it gets out so VT can learn from some of Belichick's thinking.
And in the conference expansion wars, UNC (who I think was the top prize in the ACC already) just signaled their seriousness to the P2.
Exactly. Its not about kissing their ass, its about UNC being able to sell that they will be the best NFL prep factory in college sports, which, with Belichick leading the show is something they can legitimately say and the vast majority will believe. Oh, and they'll just also happen to have some of the deepest NIL pockets out there.
And if you think that Belichick is going to be at all involved with the recruiting or NIL payments, just remember they are hiring 30 assistants. He will absolutely delegate that work to someone else so he doesn't have to worry about it.
You would have cried at me fumbling around with my 8wt just to cast it and the line coming off like a pigs tail because it's sat on the reel for so long...but yeah I've been on them so thick that the fly rod is making trips, found out I need to replace my line.
Its interesting you bring up EPL, because I have a lot of the same issues with international soccer that I do with college sports and MLB. The rich teams are the ones who win because they can afford to buy whatever they want and there is no real limit on what they can do. For a lesser team, there really isn't a path to success that doesn't start with an influx of cash from a rich saudi. The EPL is basically what the SEC and Big Ten have, where they want to just leave everyone else behind in a lower division and hoard all the attention and money for themselves, leaving a school like VT in the equivalent of the EFL Championship, just without any hope of promotion.
does this not happen at other programs? I don't really follow any VT accounts on any social media platforms so I have no idea what kinda stuff is being said. I also don't know what it's like for other programs. Is this really a problem? I imagine that most players/coaches just understand that there are going to be a loud minority of fans that just need to be ignored.
One thing that isn't going to help us be good or great are the keyboard warriors trashing outgoing guys. Criticism game to game I get and in the age of NIL can be expected but having our "top" social media accounts ripping guys on their way out does ZERO to sell this as a place to be. Potential incoming recruits see it, current players see it, high school kids see it, other coaches see it, and all it does is put the Hokies at another disadvantage in recruiting and retaining players.

I've seen your photos and it's making me jealous. Need to get down there in the winter and throw a fly at those fish, especially when you have 7-8 foot visibility. That made me chuckle and reminded me why I haven't fished SC in years and prefer NC. SC likely has more reds but I can spot 'em 50 feet away on a grass flat in NC when the sun and wind are right. Even the water on the flats in the Bay this fall had very clear water and long visibility. I guess I'm just a visual guy but I sure am jealous of those numbers you're getting!
Wow he captured our entire active roster in 1 picture.

the only difference for me is that instead of gravitating to NFL, I'm gravitating to a different sport entirely: EPL
Growing up in Virginia to a family transplanted from the UK with a father who played rugby growing up, I never had any reason to associate with or cheer for any pro football team. I didn't really get into football until I got to VT as a student. The closest connection I have to the NFL is my wife's mother is from Buffalo and is a big Bills fan. So I'm a casual Bills fan. That's it. I find soccer to be much more interesting. I'm in two fantasy leagues. One for the NFL (which is tough because I don't really watch) and one for EPL. I'm having way more fun in the latter.

Why would he go be an average NFL coach in a league where he can't get imbalanced talent when he can show up to a purchased roster that is better than 95% of the rest of the teams?
As someone who probably drinks more than his fair share of water let me say thank you for doing what you do.
All I can say about this....

I think this is a genius hire TBH. I hear everyone talking about the recruiting part but the days of having to win over the mom and all that are long gone, nowadays it is just about how much money are you going to pay us. The fact that he is saying he wants to build a NFL feeder program says it all, and that is what the kids and parents will care about. It's how much will you give us now and can you get my son to the NFL where he will make even more.
TIL, I'm a water engineer (drinking and wastewater plant design) and I've done approximately zero programming in my life. Much appreciated.

The difference is when all the biggest clubs in Europe tried to separate and organize together, all of the fans basically rioted to prevent it from happening. That's not happening in CFB. The Ohio St and Alabama fans don't care about the tradition of playing Purdue or Mississippi St every year or what the change means for the game as a whole.
