Prior to the portal opening, I heard a few trusted folks (all people in the agent community, so take it for what it's worth) saying something to the effect of 'Pry's seat isn't hot yet, and Virginia Tech is not open, but if things go downhill fast, his seat could heat up really quickly'
I thought it was quite surprising at the time.

The problem isn't only the coaching staff. The problem is Virginia Tech.
The coaching staff is definitely part of the problem. But yeah, it clearly goes much deeper than that. Unfortunately, I think the people who are in position to make changes either don't care enough about winning or are completely blind to the issues so it's unlikely we're going to see things improve any time soon
$50m for 5 years another $20m per year ($100m total) for NIL and a 30 person assistant coaching staff.
And they will make multiple times those payments in new fundraising and sponsorship contracts because of who they brought in and how good they project to be.
Virginia Tech would never do this. Even if we had the money we would never go all in like this. We are too cautious and scared, and as such we were left behind a decade ago.
This is sending up every red flag that we ignored under Fuente.

Yeah, I'm pretty much in agreement here. Losing only confirms what we already know. Winning does very little, if anything, to convince us otherwise.

This will be a monumental task for a guy who pitched this last year and then went 6-6. The roster we had for 2024 is most likely the best roster Pry is going to have. The cat's out of the bag now. Players aren't going to be lining up to come play for him.
Finally, I would be surprised, but not shocked, if things went poorly over the next four weeks and Pry was fired after the bowl game. There's not a single SEC job open right now. That means a third of the league will be open next year. If VT were open now, we'd be the best job on the market. If VT were open next year, we'll be the 10th best job on the market.
I'd be pretty shocked. Fuente got 6 years. I don't think Whit is projecting job openings and competition for new hires. He's looking at bottom line. When does Pry's contract run out? When is it going to be cheapest to get rid of him?
That's a year 2 action item.

When the only thing that matters is money, it is no longer something that I care about. I don't watch pro sports and really only watched VT sports. Mostly FB and BB but I gave up on the MBB team this year as it just isn't fun to watch at all. We aren't renewing season tickets for FB next year and I'm kinda happy as this year wasn't really enjoyable for most games. WBB is the only sport I try and watch every game this year. So all this to say, I don't know how much more college sports I will be watching as time goes on.

When I read that people thought a 500 page manifesto on how to do the best job was odd I now wonder if I'm the odd man out of having a 100+ page manifesto on how to rub things at my jobs

It's pretty common in college football coaching for coaches to show up with a 'binder' explaining a coach's proposed strategy for winning at a given school. Pry did this, Fuente did this, etc.
I think the reporting around this is mostly the media creating commentary on legendary football coach. "Oh, he's the most prepared" "So detail oriented" etc - this is the norm for this role.

well they had a guy named Urban Meyer once upon a time, he didn't do half-bad
K-State is the more interesting program, because multiple coaches have proven they can win there. At Utah, Whittingham is the only coach who has won at the P5 level. It's very Beamer-esk - you wonder if he's just an amazing coach, or if there's something about Utah, the AD, etc.
Too bad his brother didn't get that memo.
