I think the Metallica concert showed a potential market that Blacksburg could be an entertainment engine for people in SWVA and pulling in people from NC, TN, and WV

I bet this is a misnomer. I think Metallica was able to capitalize on their connection to VT. Do you think Clemson (rural school, similar alumni base, similar geography, though closer to more population centers) could have sold 75k seats to Metallica? No, I don't. People who know 2-3 Metallica songs payed a shit ton to see that just because of the Metallica x VT connection.

If all the money coming into the athletic department is actually there, I'm of the belief that we could fund both football and men's basketball to be good at the same time.

I think college sports fans will have to adjust expectations here.

Going through the mbb standings on espn, the only programs that were top 4 in their conference in CFB and MBB are USF, Miami, UVA, Duke, Illinois, and Alabama, TTU, and Houston. So already the sample size is small. And how may programs can sustain that level (top 4 in conference in CFB and MBB) over a 5 year period?

To add to that, you have schools like Villanova, Gonzaga, Dayton, etc that care a lot about basketball, but very little about football (if they even have a football team) - their spending reflects that, and as a result there is more competition in basketball for top players.

All that to say, I think if VT invests in athletics to the degree that is being promised, we're looking at a top 25 football team (once it's back on track), a top 60 MBB team, and maybe a top 30 WBB team? And I think a lot of schools are in the same situation.

If that campus plan in Whit's presentation last summer was serious about making a year round entertainment district of sorts, then something similar to JPJ should be the goal. Generating income all year round is obviously beneficial and I think the Metallica concert showed a potential market that Blacksburg could be an entertainment engine for people in SWVA and pulling in people from NC, TN, and WV (I know several people from Charlotte that drove to see Metallica). Problem is, I expect a JPJ type venue to far exceed Cassell renovation prices. This seems more like a good project goal to have a few years down the road once football's future is more clear

Never been to JPJ, but McCamish Pavilion (GT) feels like a modernized Cassell to me. IMO that's what I would love to see.

I'm don't see any reason why we could modernized like that. McCamish was built in 56, then completely renovated in 2012. Cassel was built in '62.

Coaching staff and roster. Cassell can wait even though it does need at least a renovation. If all the money coming into the athletic department is actually there, I'm of the belief that we could fund both football and men's basketball to be good at the same time. Money goes further in basketball than it does football and we're not that far off from where we need to be right now. We don't have to be Duke or Kentucky, just a couple extra mil for roster and staffing would put us in contention to be in the tournament more years than not, which IS an achievable goal (the NIT is useless. I don't want to hear from anyone that counts that as a "post-season success").

The problem that I see is I'm not convinced the money is actually there. I'm skeptical that the portion they are depending on coming in from donations won't actually materialize the way they think it will. At least not if its set up the way donations have been at VT lately. So any of it that actually is there, all the way to the nickels and dimes should probably go to football at the moment. With the college football world in flux right now, the next year or two are life and death for the program as far as what level of college football we'll be participating in going forward in the next decade. If we're gonna be short on funds, we can't expect Franklin to take even less. He didn't come here to do that and will absolutely bounce in 2 years if we start that game. But if we are truly flush, we can have success in both revenue sports with proper budgeting from the AD.

First Round of Consolations has completed.

2. Virginia Tech - 13 points, 9 in Championship Bracket, 1 in Consolations, 0 Eliminated
3. Pittsburgh - 12.5 points, 8 in Championship Bracket, 2 in Consolations, 0 Eliminated
4. North Carolina - 12 points, 7 in Championship Bracket, 1 in Consolations, 2 Eliminated
5. Virginia - 9.5 points, 1 in Championship Bracket, 9 in Consolations, 0 Eliminated
6. NC State - 4 points, 7 in Championship Bracket, 2 in Consolations, 1 Eliminated
7 Duke - 2 points, 0 in Championship Bracket, 3 in Consolations, 7 Eliminated

If the upgrade of Cassell is going to run close to $150M, is it better to create a JPJ or similar arena to create year round revenue generation? Cassell is very limited in terms of non sporting events.

Hokies run rule Bryant 11-1. They are 21 and 2
