Would have been nice, but this is a sea change from last year. The kids are gonna get better at this system. Its gonna be "lit" or whatever the kids say this year. Might not be what we were, but the future for VT Football is certainly bright.
Didn't really see the cut blocks but the one I thought I saw didn't look that bad. Teller was engaged in a block... I think they through it because the ball was no longer in the vicinity or some kinda rule change? Confused. It looked decent enough to me. Certainly the guy he did it to was expected nothing less than what Teller was giving him.
More lawyers telling kids they can't play to the whistle?
2013 Duke was the worst. We out gained them 400-200 yds, held the ball 40:00 to 20:00, Duke only completed 7 passes (and I think 0 in the second half), and didn't convert a 3rd down the entire game!
I tried, they can't be repeated on a public forum.

How about the jet sweep with, I believe someone realatively new, on our own 10, up 14-0? Bad timing, bad snap, and the rest is history.
Minus the obvious penalties and turnovers and from a preparation and execution standpoint, I thought we played very well. We missed a long TD on the first drive that was open and Evans underthrew, other than that, offense did enough to win. (ran the ball, got 3rd downs, not counting fumbles) Defense was put in bad spots, and minus the second quarter played plenty well to win.
Fumbles are part of the game, but 5 is just an anomaly hopefully. We were prepared, have a good QB, and the running game showed up.
That being said, it is going to be painful watching ACC games. Nothing about playing Pitt, UNC, and Duke, Boston College, Syracuse, and Miami and whoever the hell else is on our schedule is exciting. Other than Notre Dame, this was our season. We will play in noon snoozers where we will get beat more times than not. We dont have the talent, especially on defense that we had 10 and 15 years ago. Hell, we beat Ohio St 2 years ago and ended with a shitty season. I really dont see much difference. We play our best when we have to get up for a game. I really hope I am wrong, but the past few years we get out played in conference games when the target is on our back.
There is a big hole in this defense and the way to beat it is right up the middle. I see Pitt and Carolina running all over us. Im dreading watching that shit on tv

Just listing some games where I believe we had more total yards but still shit the bed because of our mistakes. This has been the story of VT football since 2012. I'm starting to believe we are not much better than this.
In hindsight, one of the keys was "Don't fumble inside the 5 yard line", though I suppose that's always one of the keys.

Quite the quandary.
It couldnt be worse than the penalty Teller had that cost us a first down and then led to a fumble on our on 5 yard line in a game we are up 14-0 and would end up losing by 3 scores. That was the game right there. Not the fumble, but the penalty.
I'm too drunk to honestly read through these posts but this one hurts guys. I've been there for Boise, I've been there for bama, I've been there through anything the hokie nation has asked me to be a part of. Way too many fumbles (Cam Phillips), way too many turnovers, but what hurts is the idea that if our game plan, minus the turnovers, stayed the same we would be looking at a W and not an L. I know thats easy to say but it kills me to my core as a hokie fan to see us take these devastating losses publicly, when I know we are so much better than this. We will get through this and eventually prosper......................I hope.
Well its not a secret penalties and fumbles cost us a game tonight. A game we might not get a chance at again anytime soon.
Fuente's fumble and penalty stats at Memphis are reason for concern.
For what it's worth, though, Memphis had no tradition to go off of. Do you think their fans and university were happy to give up extra penalty yards and fumbles in exchange for winning? Of course. And, given that they weren't playing teams week in and week out that would punish them for making these mistakes, it didn't cost them too much.
Fuente is at Virginia Tech now. He has a tradition to carry on. He is coaching in big, out-of-conference games and the ACC. I believe Fuente will get this right and the team will play more disciplined.
That was the man's second game, and he is no Al Golden. The ship will be righted and Tech will compete for the Coastal this year.

If y'all wanna know what actual bad defense looks like, the TTech-ASU game is 55-65 with 8 minutes left in the fourth. The ASU rb has 8 touchdown.
Let's run through the list
1) Block better on the edge CHECK
2) Control the DTs CHECK when Teller was in and not taking penalties. Shy Tuttle controlled the inside.
3) Challenge the Vols with the vertical passing game- didn't happen
4) Contain Dobbs- not at key moments
5) win on 50/50 balls. Stroman went 0-2. Otherwise not much was given up there.
Fumbles... Penalties.... Linebacker play... ugh
In regards to why more inexperienced players are playing over more experienced ones, i have some speculation:
Looking over what Fuente did at Memphis he took the long approach on overhaul. The main thing he wants to see is that players do "exactly" what he wants them to do. Exactly.
He foremost believes that execution will equal points when everyone does as they are required. I think we saw that in the 1rdt quarter. Then it broke down.
Teller had bad penalties, which is probably the most fristrating for Fuente. He knows he is the best lineman they have, but Teller's aggression gets him into situations where he is doing more than whats asked.
Fuente strikes me as a sticking to his guns on getting the execution he wants. And is willing to play younger inexperienced players now to mold them for the future.
Last night hurts. It was a sloppy, bad loss.
But if the execution of the 1rst quarter kept up even half of what they produced we would have run away with that ball game.
Finally, its game 2 of Fuente era. We fianlly have an offense that has identity and can be brutal if executed. Short term pains for long term gains
