# | Virginia Tech Defensive Coordinator Bud Foster Addresses Media at Hokies' Media Day I think Lefty tried to implement the "long con" far too often and by the time it paid off (if it paid off), he was down 3 touchdowns.
My impression is Fu implements a new version of the old 3 yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust strategy by focusing on low risk plays that can be executed consistently and in that way, stay ahead of the chains. He has stressed several times about how important it is for the QB to make the routine plays.
I think what Bud meant is he is willing to continue to live with the risks inherent in his approach if they can do a better job limiting the damage when things don't go as planned.

That's all games, not just ACC.
Oh, no I agree. I read the hell of of Mandel when he was with SI. But the reach of SI far exceeds that of FOX Sports, and while he may put out some good info nowadays, stuff like this does reek of being controversial to get page views on a website that is sorely lacking them.

I might not dismiss him outright. Yeah, he's not Phil Steele, but he was the top SI CFB writer until Fox gave him a sweetheart deal during their attempted takeover of CFB properties (including him and Erin Andrews). Having said that, he's still just another journalist. As far as mainstream outlets are concerned, I've been a fan of Andy Staples recently (although Punt Pass & Pork is half garbage. Andy, I don't care about your random rankings of non-football stuff, nor do I care about what you ate on your last road trip).
I was talking with a co-worked one Sunday about why don't more teams take that chance at the end of the first half? You're at midfield, no time to score short of a Hail Mary, and you've already got the lead.
A short time later, someone tied the NFL record for longest field goal in that exact scenario.
But seriously, send this pic to the Athletic Department. A US Olympian throwing the VT sign in Maracana with the flag draped around her shoulders after winning an Olympic Medal? Uhhhh, yeah, this is the kind of pic that will be hanging on walls in the Athletic Department for years to come.
He works for FOX Sports. That is the base definition of irrelevant.

In 2015 if we score at least 40ppg we finish the season 11-1 with our only loss to #1 Ohio State. Undefeated in ACC play, Coastal champs, etc. At 30 ppg, we're 10-2 with an additional loss to ECU and a toss up against Miami., who scored 30. At the very least, Coastal Champions.
In 2014 if we score at least 40ppg we finish the regular season undefeated. At 30ppg, we are 11-1 with a loss to BC and a toss up against Miami, who scored 30. At the very least, Coastal Champions.
In 2013, if we score 40ppg we finish the regular season undefeated. At 30ppg, we are 10-2 with losses against #1 Alabama and BC. At the very least, Coastal Champions.
In 2012, if we score 40ppg we are 11-1 with our only loss against UNC. At 30ppg, we are 9-3 with a toss-up against Miami, who scored 30. We likely finish 2nd in the Coastal.
So.... moral of the story.... Even with the Bud defense taking a step back from its prime, if we break 40 every game on offense, our history shows we have a 50% chance of finishing any given season undefeated. If we break 30, we'll drop one or two, but will win the Coastal more times than not. Just goes to show what a high powered offense will do when paired up with a Bud defense. 30 points per game isn't a bar that's set too high, and should be an attainable goal, and should we get some weapons to crack 40 ppg, we're a legitimate National Championship Contender.
The thing is, if we turn things around on offense, our recruiting on defense should improve as well, and we all know what happens when we start handing Bud top talent.

For me the series was both entertaining and sad.
Entertaining in the fact that it is about football. Entertaining in the fact that it is about a program that is offering kids a "second chance" or a first chance if they just didn't have the grades to begin with. They followed the right story lines, gave a good picture of what was going on with the program and offered a look at the JUCO scene. I thought it was a well put together documentary.
Sad in the fact that this might be the easiest opportunity at figuring out life that most of those kids will have and still some of them don't have the capacity/bandwidth to take advantage of said opportunity. I know there are numerous reasons for this. But in the end, that is a sad commentary.
is he even considered a credible source? These predictions are laughable...I'm pretty sure most half-way sane fans of any team in the league could put more realistic predictions on paper

# | "A New Job Without Having to Move": Foster, Wiles Adjust to Life Under A New Boss I agree completely..I've been saying for years if we could just pair a competent offense with Bud's defense we could be a really dangerous team. Bud has managed to keep us competitive in games against great teams. Like Alabama in '09 and again in '12(?). Both of those games were winnable because of our defense but our shortcomings offensively couldn't get us over the hump. I don't think we'll score 40 PPG this season...I'll be extremely impressed if we do...but I do think that if Bud's defense improves (which I fully expect it to) and we get closer to being the defense of his hay-day we have a decent shot at winning the coastal if we can just get a little more out of our offense than we have done in recent years.
Will be interesting with Franklin. He seemed talented on the show but not sure
how that'll play out at a big time school.

Yup. It's tragic that he left, I used to love to read him but I didn't follow him over to Fox.
It appears that he didn't do much research in this case, given that he said that Fuente "...does not inherit much cause for excitement on either side of the ball."
You know, except our OL, receiving corps, and tailbacks. QB is the only real question mark on offense, as well as the ability to adapt to a new offensive system.
And on defense, we do bring back a good DL with some talent, as well as some expectations that the inexperience in the secondary will progress admirably.
