From my understanding family really didn't play a part in his initial move out there. The closest family he had was still an hour away and it was a cousin or something like that. He also hated the traffic, as it apparently took him an hour each way to get to work.
Not all teams with massive budgets get elite level results, but you would be hard pressed to find an elite team that doesn't have a massive budget.
I asked my wife and she said Florida State (41, ETSU 1992-95). It's interesting because (like some others above), I don't even identify the FSU game as a Sugar Bowl game...I have always denoted it as the National Championship Game to the point that I completely forget it was the Sugar Bowl.
Clemson won a national title in 1980, regardless of your formula of only considering 15 years of football. And they were spending more money than VT all through the 80s, 90s, and 00's and it has only recently with the new staff that they've had "elite" success.

Admittedly I was using a simplified stat but it was consistent. Wins in BCS/playoff bowls since 2000. That certainly won't account for every game against the nig boys like VT's win over OSU, but I was more in the frame of: after being that scrappy team all season and then you get to the big boys table in these type of bowl games, did you win or lose?
So I haven't pigeonholed anything. I think you have though. You are giving Clemson credit for bucking the trend but are not acknowledging the fact that they had to spend, spend, spend way above VT to get what they did.

Yes and to achieve that and be 50% in bcs/playoff level games they have had to spend double what VT has in recruiting as well as have the 3rd highest asst coaching salaries in the ncaa.
So I don't what your definition of "they had to spend more than VT" is. (our point)
They are doing great but recognize one big reason why.

Played club at VT in 87-88. They had fliers out to get enough to field a team. Pretty sure we did not win, but had blast. Dislocated a shoulder against Radford. Also took cleat to the knee in practice that ended up being season ending, as I lost the last two weeks of the season. We've come along way!
I played rugby at Radford and got to play a 7s tourney at Tech my senior year...they stomped us as we were going thru some sanctions and whatnot. Opening kickoff of the tournament a Tech player elbowed me square in my face with a good bit of blood ensuing. Good times.
Beating Life would be like us beating Alabama in football. It just shouldn't happen. Heck of a job by those guys at the CRC, wish I was still playing.
But there is more than just one game, there was the entire regular season for Golden State as well as last year's playoffs and Finals.

No idea where to post this, so I chose this thread. Just met Ken Ekanem and Auge Conte at a wedding reception on campus. Couple of the nicest, down to earth guys you could talk to. Ekanem was especially open to having a conversation.
It's not that they aren't compensated, it's that the NCAA has set it up to keep compensation so far below anything approaching true market value for many players as to be both laughable and morally wrong.
If another school values a kid that much higher that they are willing to spend an extra say 10k a year on him out of their limited budget, why shouldn't they. if he busts then the salt and anger from the alumni paying for it will be all the greater and the system self corrects.
Are coaches really worth 5 million a or are they worth maybe 2mil and the rest is just the reflected value of the athletes on the team.
How much is an Athletic Director really worth?
Some are exceptional but in general athletic dept salaries have exploded detached from all connections to both revenue and on field performance.
Could be a good first place to look.
There is also the extra 45 mil ESPN owes the ACC if a network isn't launched.
Aside from my date blunder, should have footnoted as I thought someone would catch that, transferred from JMU after freshman year.

Just joined a club here in northern Virginia, and have already played more this year than the last two combined. Currently playing with the same Ping Eye 2s that my dad handed down to me 17 years ago. My dad played with them for ~13 years before that. Still one of the best feeling irons I have ever hit, but I think it is time to move on. Can't imagine how many shots have been played with them, but I played competitively up until college. I think the lofts have shifted after that many hits. Guessing they've been through 30 rounds a year or so for ~30 years, maybe ~1,000 rounds and maybe more common clubs get hit 5-10 times per round, plus driving range. My 8 iron has probably been hit like 12,000 times and holy hell I need new clubs...
I watched Kutztown beat Indiana today on NBC. Cal v Ark St was coming on next. It was really interesting.

I think the satellite camp Michigan is holding in Australia is where I start to lean toward this getting a little crazy. I agree with Fuente's comments on the matter, they just don't have very good policies established around these camps yet, as soon as there are better boundaries placed around them, then I am all for exposure for less touted recruits (the players most likely to benefit from them).
