My brother-in-law's father used to make ribs that were astounding. He slow cooked them over charcoal for hours using only salt and pepper. They were as good as any I've ever eaten and much better than the majority I've had, sauced or dry rubbed.

This about schools with large budgets just spending more money to gain easier access.

Okay. I can't argue with that assertion. But so what? If they want to spend their money that way, that's their business. These camps can be tremendously beneficial to the players. They're the ones getting hurt by the NCAA ban on these camps. The kids are now going to miss out on the opportunity to meet and impress big time college coaches that they wouldn't ordinarily have access to. Let's take Dadi Nicolas for an example. If his HS coach didn't already have a good relationship with our coaching staff, he'd likely have ended up playing for a crappy C-USA or Sun Belt team, where his chances of getting to the NFL would've been much lower. How many other kids like him are out there, under the radar, overlooked by the powerhouses in their own home states, that won't get a chance to play big-time college ball?

Also, how great would it be for a conference like the MAC, if they could hold a UM-style camp in the deep south and bring a lot of prospects together to meet with and learn from the coaches in that conference. I'm sure that individual MAC schools can't afford such an excursion, but if they pooled resources and did it as a group, I suspect it could be feasible, and a lot of people would benefit. Obviously, they've never tried it before, and it's hard to tell if it'd be politically workable within the conference, but now the option is not even available to them.

That is a perfectly acceptable opinion to have, but you also cant say that players should get a nicer compensation package for what they do as well, Bowls represent that opportunity but wont if we restrict them artificially.

But hey we get to keep going to games in GREAT locations in December like El Paso, Birmingham, Shreveport, Detroit and Boise!! Who wants to go to Austin and Charleston.

Yeah fuck it having value as even a reward for the kids. In a world where everyone points out just how little fo the money is diverted to the athletes the one real tangible reward that is one the table(a week in a new place, a bag full of swag and gifts, and one more chance for glory) absolutely should be curtailed.

Is the meaning of bowls as reward for groups of men who dedicate themselves and work harder than just about most of us ever will insufficient?

EDIT: And no I don't remember when there were only a few as long as I have followed the sport there have been at least 30 Bowls, I have no intrinsic attachment to some artificial restriction of the amount of the sport I can enjoy or meaningful games that can be played to settle discussions of who is better than who or which conference is best.

Ehhhh...I don't know about that. All of the SEC is glad to have ESPN broadcast their games. Also appears that all the Big12 will be. The Pac12 will just be beaming telecasts to there fans through telepathic streams with input from Bill Walton. In reality the Pac 12 Network will be covering all Spring Games

Looks like Nebraska got dropped by the Big10 Network due to to many games at the same time...hmmm.....but there game will be available for fans at midnight to watch a rebroadcast

At Arizona, Rodriguez is not a fan of spring games, calling them "two-hand touch."

That being said, the Pac-12 Network airs all 12 schools' spring games and has a block reserved for Arizona. Rodriguez doesn't want to waste that opportunity in the event some recruits are watching.

"We may just do slip and slide," he said. "We may have some sort of competition โ€” let the fat boys mud wrestle or something. But no true spring game."

Drives the faithful to show up for the spring game

Based on the last 2 spring game we've had that I attended there was no atmosphere like a game and not worth it for those that live more than an hour away and 3 hours in my case.

If they were hoping and planning for that and a great game they haven't tried. I havent received any emails about the spring game. No hyping it up...it's Fuente's first game. And no announcements of the fanzone or other activities.

Edit/Update - Only 6 ACC Teams are having their games broadcasts - FSU/Clemson/Duke/Wake Forest/Miami/The other Tech

Unless there's been some dramatic change in vest fashion of which I have not yet been advised, I'm guessing that would be his shirt.

Conversely though have you seen how many people tuned in?

The Go Daddy Bowl for instance had Ga Southern and Bowling Green, got 2.5mil, the Royals and Mets rematch on Opening Day only drew 2.8mil. While 20 other Bowls had at least 3 mil not even counting the NY6.

If we tolerate empty ball parks for months on end, why not mostly empty football stadiums for 3 weeks?

You speak of Rendezvous. That is hands down my favorite, but I will say that it depends on when you go. I have had ribs that were just OK, but then the next time they were spectacular.

Memphis is a good job, but what holds them back is the conference they play in and the over-exuberant expectations among the fanbase. They can play with the big boys, but look what it took for Calipari to make that happen...I think it's a toss up with Wichita. He is a 'god' there, but how long can he sustain that at the mid-major level?? At Memphis he would be given more resources, but the expectations would be through the roof for him to replicate exactly what he did at WSU. Upon arrival, if it is Marshall, if he doesn't have them in the sweet 16 within 2-3 seasons, they'll run him out.

Off topic, any suggestion that the ribs aren't what they're cracked up to be didn't go to the right place(s). Memphis style isn't a slab of bones drenched in sauce, so if that's what you like and what you're used to, Memphis ain't for you.

I'll put my Memphis dry rub recipe against any sauced ribs, anywhere, anytime.

I'll provide some insight as a Memphis Alum and was in school during their Final Four run and stayed in Memphis several years after...

The entire town had/has a ridiculously over inflated sense that the basketball program is a national powerhouse. With Calipari they definitely were a force and hardcore Tiger fans would hilariously argue to their death that they could've beaten the Grizzlies (during the Griz sub 20-win years, and yes, they were stone serious. I just laughed in their faces)
Memphis is a solid job, but they only hired Pastner in a effort to salvage and maintain any shred of a connection to Calipari. Their facilities are solid, they play in the Forum and have great, albeit small, locker room space there. The on-campus practice facility is nice, but it's not even in the ball park of Hahn-Hurst.

Pastner did well with what Calipari left him, but since then, he's been mediocre at best. The upside to Memphis is that they are passionate about basketball and they take pride in being a basketball school, so whoever goes there and is successful will be embraced the world over.

Also, Calkins is the definition of salty. He's not angry that Pastner is leaving, he's silently (sort of) taking direct shots at the university and fanbase by saying they're not as relevant as they think they are, and if you think already successful coaches are going to be falling over each other to take this job, you're just dumb. But at the same time, appeases the crowds by still saying it's a desirable position. Memphis is a good job, but by no means a destination job.

To get an idea of Calkins and his reputation among Memphians...Here's the mailbag following the above mentioned article.... This is a small sample size, but it is the norm of Calkins' rhetoric and journalistic reputation.

What's the famous rib place just off Beale St? I waited in line for two hours to get a table. One of the singularly more disappointing meals of my life.

I saw where Jeff Goodman was calling Memphis a top 20 job on twitter. Said it was easily better than Wichita St and Marshall would consider it.

Didn't think I would be in minority in thinking that I don't give two shits about 50 teams playing in the postseason. The postseason should be earned, that's what it is in every other sport. Yeah, okay, we get more football if everyone plays more, but do you see how many people actually attend the Car Care Bowl? Like 50. It's sad and pathetic.

Man, that Tennessee uniform is not flattering at all. Just sayin, if he has any desire to get laid in college, wearing a uniform that highlights a gut like those do can't help.

I think that is a reasonable complaint of the schools and conferences, but if I recall the ACC even got the numbers negotiated down when they did their last round of Bowl order reshuffling.

There's always a couple of bowls that become defunct every year. By doing a three year ban, this will allow the natural progression of things to walk the number of bowls back a bit, without forcing any of the organizing committees out of the bowl business if they want to stay in. Then in three years they can revisit where things stand and decide to continue the moratorium or allow expansion again.
