Somebody tell me if this was a classic Beamer trait, "he seemed slow to give people his trust." What could have been had we run 34 from the get go in that game? Evans (after going down in Fall camp) was only missed the first three quarters of that game. Maybe Bama's D would have been tuckered out too. If only...if only I knew the lotto numbers.

Backloading that contract so heavily doesn't seem like a great idea to me. That's a tremendous gamble that he'll be successful. If he does well, that's great. Either he'll be worth the money or someone will hire him away and pay the buyout. If Illinois remains mediocre, they can't afford to fire him. They'll either be stuck with an overpriced coach, or they'll find themselves paying him a huge salary to not coach for them.

I wouldn't be too worried. Dude made an absurd amount of money for over a decade in an extremely low cost of living area. Even with a moderate savings percentage and relatively conservative investments, wouldn't surprise me at all if he had $1 million+ in investments and savings. It's entirely possible this job is just a hobby with a bonus of some walking around money + free JMU tuition for his daughters.

Of course I could be completely off base, but I'm certainly not going to worry about someone who made 5-10 times median pay for a large chunk of his career. My first assumption in the giant pay cut isn't that there's some financial catastrophe, it's that he doesn't need the money and is doing it to spend time with his family and find fulfillment.

Is RichRod in the goose eggs image somewhere? I've never noticed if he is.

I agree with you, but have assumed Buzz places a different "better" meaning to it, like lefty's "Dude", so left it alone. Just like his frequent references to us or the players not being that good irk me a little, though I write that off as trying to hard to stay and be humble when we are blowing expectations and ranked teams out of the gym.

The article is for the Tarheel's home town paper - they are writing to their reader's who are mostly UNC fans or UNC haters. They do mention VT in the section above crashers as making the tournament exciting, and that we would face teams we've beaten. I expect he will learn how many VT alum consider DC home this week, but think it was more to get in the dig at MD and whine about it not being in NC, -saying it works good for us as well goes against his story line. I don't really see the disrespect here I would if someone from the Roanoke paper wrote this.

I'm not completely familiar with the terms of Buzz's current contract, but perhaps Babcock may want to lock him up a little tighter before or if anyone makes a serious run at him. Would be nice to have a benefactor like T. Boone Pickens.

This thread has been here for a whole day and sure Buzz got robbed. That's true and it sucks. However, don't forget what's really important:

Buzz Williams, Virginia Tech (22 votes)

Tony Bennett, UVA (2 votes)

Just got some 2$ tickets for an upper corner. Anyone know how easy it is to sneak into lower sections at the VC? Strict ushers? I imagine they may be somewhat lax given the sparse crowds for split sessions and the fact that its not a caps playoff game.

These are the type of posts that you want to leg because you agree, but at the same time it just feels kind of dirty to upvote that picture.

I'd rather play BC than Flast, and while we thoroughly trounced Miami this last time, they thoroughly trounced us the first time, so I'm not anxious to play them again. Are we hot right now? You betcha, but this is neutral territory, no home advantage. While I admit to being more hopeful than confident, I am extremely excited to see how this team handles this tourney, and big splash or early exit, am really looking forward to their NIT performance...unless we're still playing this Saturday. Then, well, we'll see.

I understand the sentiment that a lot of fans have towards the Galaxy (and now NYCFC) as "league favorites." The Red Bulls used to fall into that category too, but they've deliberately moved towards a more Moneyball, system-based organization that is pumping lots of money into youth development instead of relying on aging Euro stars.

But for all the gripes (real & perceived) fans have about MLS gaming the system in favor of New York & LA, you have to look at the alternative. We've also seen this recently with Droga going to Montreal... those big name stars in the twilight of their career dictate where they want to go. They aren't coming at all if they don't get to end up in their preferred destination since they have plenty of options.

If the league isn't run as a single-entity, then it's a moot point. But it is, and that's how the league survived through its lean years. Making MLS a place that accommodated the wishes of aging stars like Beckham helped get it to the place where it is today.

Also: Black and Red United is easily the best source for DC United on the web. In my opinion, it's probably in the top 3 in terms of team-centric MLS blogs.

My prediction... Buzz sticks around and builds a nationally competitive program. VT rewards the program with a new arena - the house that Buzz built.
