The EE line is the most intriguing. That spring semester can be huge for a freshman to help them see the field and develop. Bronco won't have 20 year old freshmen coming in either. I think UVA is about to get a culture shock in the program.
These pun threads are really going to push me over the Edge one day
Ok guys need some help here. Wife is not sure about getting season tickets. We have some MAJOR things coming this year and she wants me around during the season. She also doesn't see how she can make it up for any games. So how do I convince her that we should buy tickets? Is buying a single season ticket an option? Anyone done that before?
Damn you, Bitter! We could've had #1 recruiting class if you guys had just helped.
I remember people criticized Whit and Beamer for saying the goal of the program was to win the Coastal, but an NC is so hard to get. To even play for one is a huge accomplishment. We need to be realistic and focus on goals we could reasonable achieve this season.
For me, a realistic expectation for this season is just staying competitive in the Coastal race. Winning would be great, but a coaching change makes everything harder. If we can stay in the picture right up to the end, I'd be happy.
as someone who has a background in Engineering I'm in way over my head when it comes to language. But f*** it, I'll give it a shot anyway.
I think it's probably hard to assign parts of speech to slang. I think the original post arguing that "Peace Out" isn't an act but rather a contraction of a phrase would support your conclusion that it is a defective verb. It's not really actually a verb at all.
My head hurts.
I think ND does something similar.
It's probably just semantics. If a kid doesn't dress or see the field their first year, they can earn that 5th year. But if they suck, they don't get it. It could lead to them playing kids as true freshmen that they shouldn't. But it could also lead to them not having 5th year seniors on the team who stink.
If they keep recruiting like this, it doesn't matter how old the kids are.
Lol I love that AB calls this guy out on social media.
Ford would be a great get. A real Model A player.
Yep, really good chance he's going to walk on here. Otherwise, he might be considering offers from smaller schools.
A lot of what I'm reading on this thread resembles the conversations I've had over the last few years with the PSU folks up here.
They were in a similar situation that we were in:
- Had a long-time coach who believed the way he operated was still going to work, even though the game had changed significantly
- Had a S&C program that wasn't getting the job done (when O'Brien arrived he said that the S&C program at PSU was stuck in the stone age and needed a major overhaul)
- Didn't understand how the new world of recruiting had to work
- Had a coach who was extremely loyal to his assistants, including his son (Shane was likely a world better than Jay Paterno, but still)
There are a lot of things in both programs that helped set up for the future, and with the penalties and turmoil PSU went through (which were far more severe than the transition we are going through), I think we're probably looking at being a year or so behind them rebuilding-wise, but probably not as far back as they fell due to things.
They have to deal with Meyer, and, now, Harbaugh at two in-division traditional powers. We have to deal with a new look UNC and Richt arriving in Miami on top of the current conference powers in the Atlantic division.
Yes, recruiting helps, and I believe it will improve. But I think at this point we have to pay it forward a little by getting results on the field in order to kick start recruiting in the next few years.
I think my heart just stopped.
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind linguistic discussion at all. It's kinda my job when I'm not on TKP.
Here's one for you. I've seen and heard "peace out" as an infinitive and in the simple past "he peaced out" and the pluperfect "he had peaced out a long time ago." But I've never found it used in the present -- either simple "he peaces out" or progressive "he's peacing out" -- or the future "he will peace out." Until a salient number of attestations can be documented, I think we can safely consider "peace" out to be a defective verb.
(Too far?)
There's great talent in California? Name one.
After the first few highlights I just saw a guy with speed. And while speed is great, I'd like an RB with some physicality. Then at about 1:08 when he runs over a dude:

You need to improve your game time standing strategy. Timeouts, breaks between quarters, TV timeouts - these are the opportunities to catch a breather, sit for a bit, have a sip of smuggled bourbon (with or without your preferred mixer) and then pop up and cheer when things go back to live action.
As for Sharkey's - to borrow a phrase: They jumped the shark when they moved into the new building. I understand why the owners did it (opportunity to own the building vs pay rent, larger space) but it completely changed the feel.
I'd bump your 'too old' number to a nice round 30 but I came to VT as a grad student so I didn't even arrive until I was 28.
I 100% agree with this. Cam Newton had this amazing season because he was an added threat on the ground, not the only threat. A mobile QB would be great, but it needs a strong O-line and a good running game to be truly effective.
Mobile QBs are powerful weapons, but not a panacea for our recent decline.
The game week structure is interesting. I know that under Beamer, Sunday's were off days and that Monday-Thursday were the practice days, with Friday being the walkthrough in shorts and a tshirt day. I know he stopped at Tuesday in his answer, but one would assume CJF will have them practice Sunday and Tuesday-Thursday following the off day of Monday. Might take some getting used to for the upper classmen. French do you have any takes on this structure for game week practice schedules?
what else are we gonna talk about? It's the off season. I'm tired of hearing about our recruiting class. Torrian Gray is gone. It's a shame but we'll move on. Not much more to say on those topics.
Until French's Memphis film reviews come out or a new DB coach is hired I'd rather talk about the intricacies of the English language than our recruiting class, or speculating on the future of the program, or debating whether wins or donations are more important to the growth of VT football, etc etc.
-He talked very highly of Sam Rodgers and what he brings to the table, and reminds him of one of the guys he had at Memphis (name is escaping me).
I wasn't at the event but I would assume he was mentioning Alan Cross because I have made that comparison myself. Cross was a walk-on (I believe) turned tight end. Played all 4 years and became the teams leader. A lot of similarities between how they may be used in the offense, and their character off the field.
He talked very highly of Sam Rodgers and what he brings to the table

Great info though. We appreciate it.
He is still deciding what he wants to do. At least according to Mike Barber.
I'm told Woodgrove High School defensive tackle Clay Dean, who committed to #Hokies last March, is still considering signing with VT.β Mike Barber (@RTD_MikeBarber) February 4, 2016
Maryland? Really? Just Wow.
Although I've never been to one of these since I haven't lived in VA in forever but I think when someone asks a stupid question the rest of the audience should start chanting.....

I'm really thinking we should be working to Escape threads where puns are the main Focus.
