The dude is a class act and a very smart QB coach who works his arse off. He has a book of great plays that when he strings them together well, can make a defense look silly. I did not give him any back handed compliments but merely pointed out that sometimes he seems to get too wound up in individual plays and doesn't give the OLine and RBs a chance to establish their own rhythm. You can chart out terrific chords but if the composer doesn't keep an eye on the song as a whole, the result is discordant and disjointed play... you are free to disagree but I was not slamming him at all.

My quick take on the QB battle- my eyes and my ears tell me that if Evans wasn't part of the mix, Motley would win a quarterback battle with Lawson. Lawson has tremendous upside, but he was given every opportunity to step up and take the job and Motley performed better in practice. When Lawson got repetitions, he didn't make good use of them. He was tentative in the read option game and inaccurate with his passing. As I said before the season (and I was berated for it), the only reason Lawson should not have been redshirted was if he was clearly the top quarterback in fall camp. Otherwise, if he had been better than Motley he should have been the emergency QB and shirted unless there was an injury. If he wasn't, he should have been redshirted with no chance of getting the shirt pulled.
Evans changes the mix. Lawson has the physical tools to compete with Evans. Evans looked MUCH more assertive and efficient on film. Spring ball certainly will have it's share of storylines.
Seems like he could have held out for a head coaching gig.

We may lead the country in FTM and FTA, but we are only shooting 65% as a team. That is terrible (14th in the ACC). We went 13-23 (57%) against Lamar. I think it's the difference between us being 7-3 and 9-1. Leading the county in FTM and FTA only shows that you get to the line more than anyone else. You actually have to convert a decent percentage for those stats to be meaningful.
I am not sure. In the bay, The regs were 1 fish between 20 and 28 inches, and a second fish 20 inches and up this year. They are always changing.
I'm pretty thrilled to see a MUCH more balanced scoring attack (6 players in double figures in this game) than in years previous. Anybody on this squad can make plays and get hot, rather than looking to players like Malcom Delaney and Erick Green to score 40 to even keep us close. Lots of weapons, lots of ball movement, lots of teamwork. This will serve us well throughout the year.

Excellent point. If you get an elite recruit at Mike or Backer in Bud's system, and he learns the system well, he's in a perfect position to be in consideration for the Nagurski Award.

It's not just picking up the playbook. It's the whole package of mentally being a QB.
In fact, Loeffler never specifically mentioned the playbook, he referred to the mental part of being a QB. I took that to mean a broad spectrum of things ranging from practice habits, knowledge of the playbook, leadership, attitude, focus, study habits, behaving the right way on & off the field. In his limited action I got hints that Lawson was something of a free-lancer who always looked to keep the ball on the option and always looked for deep passes regardless of the play call or proper read. He wanted a highlight reel play and he wanted it now. Then he just seemed to have a lackadaisical / 'whatever' kind of attitude on the sideline for much of the season, including a lack of urgency on the field and a lack of interaction on the sidelines. Not characteristics a backup QB should be presenting if they want more playing time. IMO he checked out mentally when he realized he wasn't going to be the starter or even the first QB off the bench. Maybe it was that combined with being a college freshman combined with being homesick, but whatever it was he needs to shake it off and get on the right track if he wants to be QB1. (BTW I think these are typical problems for young QB... one reason its so difficult for a true FR QB to be starter game 1)
Lucky for Lawson he will have a clean slate with Fuente and Cornelsen and an open competition for QB1 this spring. I just hope some of Brewer's intangibles rubbed of on Lawson.
That is rough. Let's hope the new offensive coaches can find some linebackers in their old recruiting footprints.
He's weighing his options (smaller FBS schools, FCS schools, walkon opportunities), but right now it isn't out of the question that he'll walk on at Tech. I think he has a recruited walkon spot.
Which is kind of what we want to avoid...IF we can find a rotation that's effective. I think shooting for McMillian to average around 15 carries a game over the course of the season is the sweet spot. Enough opportunity to be dangerous, but he's still got his legs come November. I really think if that had been Travon's workload from the start, he'd have been gassed down the stretch.
The question is, will we have viable second, third and fourth options who can contribute?
He also still has a redshirt to burn, for some stupid reason.
The captain said we are targeting redfish, trout and snook if they are around. He seems to be more of a flats guy that doesn't really go after amberjacks but I will ask if things are slow.
