I agreed at the time with the decision to burn Lawson's redshirt. Once he played, though, be should have been given enough meaningful game experience that he would be better for it next year. That is a strategic decision and completely under Loeffler's control. The point is not about his remaining years of eligibility, but the level Lawson will start out next year. Long term success of the program wasn't really something Loeffler was too worried about this year, though.

The 'doing everything we could do to win' argument holds no water. Lawson (or Durkin, for that matter) could have beat Furman and Purdue and lost to Ecu and Pitt (100 yards total offense). Motley played well at NC State, but shit, Lawson might have too if he had just started 4 games.

There are some other factors at play. And what you said above isn't exactly true.
We went to a bowl last year at 6-6, but still pulled a million more from the ACC than loluva did, who was 5-7 and didn't go to a bowl.

Don't know if it matters to anyone but he actually weighed in at 230 lbs this year. Also his stats were from 8 games so he averaged close to 400 yds passing per game.

OT but I sure hope the coaches have been drilling hard about the fact if these guys come to VT they'll have the opportunity to play in front 160,000 people in September. That seems like a great thing for recruiting.

Looking at this practically, I think this is less to do with taking a principled stand about only "rewarding" teams with winning records, and more to do with ADs being sick and tired of being on the hook for guaranteed ticket allotment for the lowest tier bowls. I think it's safe to say VT athletics will lose money by making the Independence Bowl, because we won't be able to sell all our ticket allotment. This has been a growing discontent among ADs for a while now, and this is the first backlash against it.

Put it this way... the Nike defined name for the number font of that uniform set is 'Blacksburg'.

In the Independence Bowl, Virginia Tech plays against Tulsa. Guess which school will be wearing uniforms with the 'Blacksburg' font...

Yes, VT get's a portion of the ACC bucket. But, they would receive more revenue to stay home then if they had to eat the loss from a 6-6 bowl. So, in generalities, every 6-6 team will net less than teams who don't even qualify for the bowls.

I kinda figure that a good coach is a good coach. Not to say that you want someone to coach blind, but talent is talent and you want your best talent in the game. It's like the best athlete on the team in high school plays quarterback, you want the best coach coaching. Truly good coaches can learn the nuances of the position, it's the ability to coach that is important. IMHO, of course.

You have to recruit a lot. This means visiting and texting 17-year-old boys every day, something that would get you arrested if you had a different job. You also have to spend time with rich alumni and pretend you are not spending time with them because they are rich alumni, that their richness isn't the reason you are drinking Bud Light with them on a Tuesday night in a weird banquet hall when you should be texting a 17-year-old.

I agree with you. I feel like we were on the same "cool" factor with Oregon for a while (05-09), and then we decided to take a more "traditional" approach to our uniforms. Never really understood that move. We were one of Nike's "elite schools" and then dropped them and never recovered.
