I wish! I will be working that night. Uncle Sam conveniently neglected to mention that "service before self" would include placing me 10 minutes away from a football stadium where the Hokies would be playing.
That response time though...
It does have Chipotle (although the one here is not as good as the ones I've visited other places), Moe's Southwest Grill, Panera Bread and all the other usual suspects. The southern part of Youree Drive has been built up with nice shopping area and tons of food places. Airline Drive is also being built up with 2nd and 3rd locations of all those places.
It's an interesting place that has all the convenience of a small city with all the new additions but you can drive 10 miles out of the city limits and be in the sticks. That being said, it was above 100 degrees every day for over two weeks this summer plus I thought the may flies in Virginia were bad but the insects here are awful, so I can't wait to move on.
I added Bodacious BBQ, Fully Stacked, and a couple more regional fast food places (Raising Canes and Zaxby's).

36. Camping World Independence Bowl (Dec. 26, Shreveport, Louisiana) — Tulsa (6-6) vs. Virginia Tech (6-6)
The Hokies turned in an inspiring effort to get Frank Beamer a final bowl game before he retires and now they have to finish it off. Just a little unfortunate Beamer's final contest isn't in a place a little more glamorous than Shreveport.
But we are the ones that feel "entitled"... seems Yahoo Sports shows a little sympathy
Hokies' Guide to Shreveport-Bossier City
First off, welcome fellow Hokies to Ratchet City. Yes, you heard correctly, Shreveport is actually "the home of the ratchet" as you will hear proudly proclaimed on the local rap/hip-hop radio station. It doesn't get as cold here as it does in Virginia, but it will likely still be near freezing during your stay, so don't think just because it's the deep south you can get away without packing some warm clothes. The business in the local area is supported by gambling addiction and the military, so if you make your way into the dingy parts of town don't be surprised to see tobacco shops, tattoo parlors, gas station casinos, and a few strip joints.
Attractions
- Louisiana Boardwalk - Shopping outlets, right on the Red River. Plenty of stores and restaurants, with the most prominent being a gigantic Bass Pro Shops and a Salt Grass Steakhouse, respectively. There is also a decent movie theater, but I recommend Tinsel Town if you're looking to go to the movies.
- R.W. Norton Art Gallery - Local art gallery with botanical garden. The website is vague on what will be open around the holidays, so I would call if you're interested.
- Sci-Port - Science museum right off the river in downtown Shreveport. Closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, closes early New Year's Eve.
- Gators and Friends - Nearby animal park that has mostly gators, but some other exotic animals. The website says it will be closed every Mon/Tues and doesn't mention holiday hours, but I'm guessing Christmas Eve/Christmas Day is a no go.
- Barksdale Global Power Museum - Government id/military base access required. If you have access to the military base, I recommend visiting.
- Louisiana State Exhibit Museum - I've never been here, and the website is vague (call for hours), but you might be interested in this.
- Youree Drive, Shreveport - All of your shopping needs can probably be found here.
Casinos
I am not a gambler, so I can really only comment on the interior and some of the food.
- Horseshoe Bossier City - If you've ever wanted to see what $1 million dollars in cash looks like, they have it behind glass lining the walls. Buffet is pretty good with mixture of American, Mexican, Asian, and Seafood. Located next to the boardwalk.
- Margaritaville Bossier City - Probably the nicest casino on the inside, looks much newer than the others. Connected to the Louisiana Boardwalk.
- Boomtown Bossier City - Don't know much about this one, but they have a huge sign promoting their Cattleman's Buffet
- Diamond Jack's Casino - Don't know much about this one either.
- El Dorado Shreveport - I've been inside here and it's pretty nice. This is also on the Shreveport side near the local nightlife.
- Sam's Town Casino - Sorry to all the gamblers, I haven't checked this one out either.
- Harrah's Louisiana Downs - Horse track, on the edge of Bossier City. This is where you will find more locals/truckers.
Food
- Saltgrass Steakhouse - (menu) You need to eat Stuffed BBQ Shrimp Enbrochette and Range Rattlers. You're welcome.
- Bodacious BBQ - I almost forgot this, which would have been a tragedy. If you like BBQ, you need a Bo-tato in your life.
- Herby K's - If you want to taste the local seafood, go here. Full disclosure, the website is terrible and the location looks like you will get shot but the seafood is legit. Go during the day.
- Tom and Chee - Next level grilled cheese game is strong.
- Stawn's Eat Shop - If you are in the Pie crowd, this is the place to go.
- Twisted Root Burger Co. - Great burger joint.
- Papa & Company - If you can swing their limited hours, this is THE burger to get in the area.
- Another Broken Egg - Great breakfast and brunch place.
- Superior's Steak House - This place is pretty popular, not to be confused with...
- Superior Grill - Great Mexican and Tex-Mex food.
- Fully Stacked Bar & Grill - (menu here) If you go drinking downtown, this place is open all night and has great burgers (Fiery burger is great). They also have a stacked burger challenge, if you can eat the monster that they serve on a pizza tray, they will add a patty to the challenge for the next person who tries to attempt.
- Sushiko - Sushi place on the Louisiana Boardwalk. Best in the area as far as I'm concerned. I love all kinds of sushi and typically stick with the raw stuff but they have a "Texas Roll" which is steak, fried asparagus, and cream cheese that you should try while you're there.
- The Blind Tiger - Great Louisiana food, very good.
- Copeland's - This is a chain in Louisiana. It's got great locally inspired food and the atmosphere is a little more upscale than others although you can go in regular clothes. The pie game is strong.
- Ralph & Kacoos - More New Orleans style food, awesome place.
- Casino Buffets - All of them are great with their own specialties. Check out the websites or call because some do certain things on different nights (for example, Horseshoe does snow crab legs on Fridays).
- Local fast food - If you haven't experienced Smash Burger or the Texas staple that is Whataburger (not to be confused with VA's What-a-burger, it's not even close), you need to. There is also Raising Canes, which is an entire fast food restaurant dedicated to chicken fingers and their special sauce (no, I'm not kidding, the menu is about 3 combinations of chicken fingers - a few, a lot, and as a sandwich on bread). If you want more variety in your chicken, Zaxby's is another great chicken place with more options.

Man, the Shreveport-Bossier area is starting to catch up.
I feel like there wasnt anything worth while when I first got there 6 years ago. Slowly but surely they started getting things here and there. I believe they got Chipotle, Panera Bread, and a few other restaurants before I left in 2013.

I actually think the Russell Athletic Bowl has recently been/will continue to be a better game than the Gator (Tax Slayer) bowl.
I can't say that I've seen any Hokies wearing a "Beat ECU" T-Shirt.
, but from a ticket sales/attendance standpoint (which is what bowls are all about)
I don't think this is the case... I think the TV/Ad revenue is the biggest driver. But, I agree - If there's not at least one ACC major alumni base nearby the city hosting the bowl, that city should not have a bowl.

Tell that to the Pitt fans. They are melting down on twitter in epic fashion and from the comments on their SB Nation site, the commentors are pretty upset as well. They seem really angry with the ACC. Maybe they should be angry with their administration.
