I think both are in better coaching situations right now, though. If UVA had acted faster they may have had a shot. With Miami hiring Richt UVa's shot at getting guys like Mullen and Rhule went south IMO. The Coastal is going to be tough to win with Richt at Miami.
I think that these guys not only did not catch the ball they were not on the field. I didn't miss any games this year and I LOOKED for a 3rd WR at anytime to go in. other than garbage min when Lawson and durkin were in with them NO other WR came in for a sub or a 3rd WR at any point other than Stroman and asante against UNC when Cam hurt his ankle. when ford and cam needed a rest we went sam out wide or 2 TE heavy sets with 1 wide or motioned a RB out. these GUYS did not get on the field. I just don't understand why at all.
this is just from hokiesports.com stats
games played/ games started
d. Knowles 2/ 0
cj carroll 2/ 0
kevin asante 11 / 0 (he plays on ST so that counts as GP)
Joel Caleb 11 / 0 (see above)
Deon Newson 6 / 0 (see above also was suspended )
Will be playing in the High School Army All-American game.
They could still end up with Rhule or Mullen. Either would be formidable hires.

Yes there is. I was feeling pretty good about myself embedding an official VT tweet as I didn't see it posted yet. Then, BOOM, two previous comments with the exact same thing! My bad.

# | Can We Talk About How Good Our New Special Teams Coach, James Shibest, Is Going To Be? If he leaves the tackle box, you can hit them. You can also hit them if it's a bad snap and the ball is fumbled. Much like AJ could have been rocked without penalty when recovered the high snap in the endzone. Or even this hit on the punter in the Baylor game is legal because the ball was fumbled first.
I'm kinda hoping Loeffler is like the Good Luck Chuck of CFB. I mean, his offense at Auburn was horrendous when he was there and then Gus came in and had one of the best offensive units in the country just one season later. How cool would it be if Fuente did that at VT? Then everybody would hire Loeffler for a year or two and then hope their next coach would take them to the Championship.
Article 16.a.4. The kicker's protection under this rule ends (a)when he has had a reasonable time to regain his balance(A.R. 9-1-16-IV); or (b)when he carries the ball outside the tackle box (Rule 2-34) before kicking.
I think it was in CJF's press conference that he said his goal is to have 17 OL on scholarship. That would mean taking about 4 per class. He definitely understands the importance of a strong OL. As we know all too well, a weak OL can limit the best of skill players....
Everyone in the state of Virginia when VT announced that Whit had hired Fuente, well before the madness all started:

Yeah, we raised the bar. Beat UVA twice in the span of 48 hours.
I think he'd have been better off just catching it than running it 5-10 yards the wrong way and getting pummeled.
Yes, it's called "a fair catch", and is an alternative to letting it bounce down the field. It was pretty clear that it should have been used more often.
throughout this entire cluster that is the coaching carousel I just hope UVA fails mightily. I seriously hope they value themselves much higher than what they're valued by others and keep getting turned down. That would make me so happy. It would make my day to find out they couldn't even get anyone from the top 5 of their wishlist.
This year, we improved by 4 points. Not an insignificant improvement. But still not particularly good.
As expected, Memphis Co-OC and QB Coach Brad Cornelson will leave for VT after the Memphis Bowl game. ($) https://t.co/QIV0gLSFTG— Bryan Moss (@Bryan_Rivals) December 3, 2015
Yep
They ran into him while his leg was still in the air from the kick.
It's not legal in American football, anyway.
WhOa whoa whoa, did you just point out that Lefty was increasing the point per game average?
Some of the other rumors I've read today (sorry, to lazy to link them):
Rhule is out at Mizzou, Temple is trying to making him comfortable enough to stay. Maybe that's a good move, seems logical he's waiting out Frankin at PSU. But is Rhule more interested in UVA than Mizzou?
Mizzou seems to feel that if Dykes or Odom were there man, a deal would be done by now. Maybe they are waiting on a championship team.....Fedora? Or maybe they wanted Rhule and he said no. Some slight hope still for Herman who hasn't signed his deal (connections to Mizzou's AD). My guess is that they have got some no's and are trying to deal with who is down their list.
South Carolina and UVA seem to be in disarray. USC seems to be serious about looking at Muschamp. Lincoln Riley is the hot new name at UVA and USC. Sanford has said he isn't leaving ND, so seems to be no interest from UVA there. I wouldn't be surprised to see UVA go with one of the NFL names they have contacts with, Lazor or Musgrave. Seems like a UVA move. Darkhorses: Bobby Petrino (USC), Bob Diaco (UVA).
Still waiting for Dan Mullen to find a spot, he seems to want to get the F out of Starkville. USC? UVA? Strong could be Richt'd after another loss this weekend (4-8?). Jeremy Pruitt could end up with a good job by default....or back at Bama to run their defense. Dino Babers is too good of a coach to be left at BGSU. Maybe Syracuse. Is Troy Calhoun really going to leave AFA?
From Coachingsearch.com:
Virginia Tech: Memphis co-offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach Brad Cornelsen will join Justin Fuente's staff after Memphis' bowl game, according to Rivals.com.
He basically said his philosophy on that is "If you dont shoot you cant score". I think hes said that interviews as well.
I mean I feel like you could send out demitri noles and he could run a route and catch the football and pretend to block and maybe a couple other folks. they have been playing WR their whole lives.
Not true, for Demetri Knowles. He grew up in the Bahamas and never played football until he 15 or 16, if I recall the story correctly. I still can't figure out, though, why he doesn't seem to have progressed as a football player since his freshman year, though. He looked to have a lot of potential when he first arrived here, but quickly fell off the map after that.
I think its interesting that there hasn't been confirmation of Wiles yet. I wonder if Fuente is hoping to poach another DL coach from somewhere else?

# | Can We Talk About How Good Our New Special Teams Coach, James Shibest, Is Going To Be? That doesn't really explain why guys who don't know when to kneel/call a fair catch are returning kickoffs/punts.

Based on the talent we have on offense I think the program is better than when he inherited it. That said, while Lefty was book smart about football he lacked something. I know we harp on his play calling but I also think we just executed poorly.
I always loved that we seemed to play above our recruiting stars with coached up talent in the late 90's early 00's. And we've always played that way on defense. Lefty just didn't seem to have that effect on his players. (Imho) After watching the Ole miss/Memphis game and setting aside CJF's offensive play calling, I was most impressed with a team of walk-ons and 2*'s playing way above their pay grade. I think we've really lacked this on offense and I'm excited less about some genius play caller and more about an offensive minded leader who get's the most of his men.
