But I would think Mullen would want to take a step up from where he is, Not rebuild another program. At UVA he would have to turn that program completely around as to if he came to VT he would just have to improve things a little bit.

Fuente is known as a guy that streamlined the personnel at TCU and then turned around a horrible program at Memphis and made the most out of what he had. If Fuente is able to create a streamlined offense with a clear direction we will be fine. Our offense has had no clear direction for many years now and it shows on the field. I also know that Whit is incredibly plugged into everything and it should tell you everything you need to know that he is going with Fuente. If Bud Foster stays in this scenario as well we should be building a damn statue for Whit. I don't think people are giving enough credit to how tricky this whole season long situation has been for an AD. We are incredibly lucky to have Whit.

I'll argue culture and facilities. IMHO they're really middle tier in both respects. There was a article recently discussing culture and why some really good coaches fail and it sure smelled a lot like LOLUVA

With an offense that didn't throw passes or even have a QB. That's only a slight exaggeration. That wing T offense bugged me like GTs 1920s chop block based offense does.

The one thing I would like to see, though, is that I'd like to see our next head coach challenge Bud to develop a defense that can run in either a 3-4 or a 4-3. With a guy like Settle, I think we may finally have that bell cow that could play nose in a 3-4. I'm just not sure if we have the LBs. Maybe we could convert a few 230 lb DEs to OLBs, might make them a little more viable as NFL 3-4 OLBs

Winning because of a cohesive strategy and winning because the athletes played like hell and we had an elite defense are two very different things.

Who knows, Fuente may be a great recruiter and was just limited with what he could realistically do at Memphis. But you're kind of taking a leap of faith with that assumption. One of the biggest knocks on Foster as HC is his lack of recruiting prowess. Fuente is no more proven than Bud in this regard, so why not just hire Foster and offer a ton of money to Jeff Scott or Lincoln Riley if all we need is a clear offensive direction?
If Whit ultimately hires Fuente, I completely trust his judgment and believe he thinks Fuente can be successful with recruits. But right now for me, I have some concerns about that.
All you gotta do is line up 10 corn fed bulldozers and snap it to the kid with the freakish speed and watch him run. Works great if you have the personnel.
