Thx. Didn't realize how legit a track guy he is/ was. Guys Duke fast have given us trouble in the past (whether it was line play - we had injuries straight up the middle in MIAMI or MLB play or problems covering the speed)....for what little its worth I still would have like to see him decimate the D formation instead of changing it up for him. Under the theory of live by the sword, die by the sword. Seemed like we switched out our sword before getting killed. What we brought to the fight was either flawed in execution or not a sword at all.

This reminds me of someone from my HS team. He would run into blockers or when he wasn't blocked he would mysteriously shuffle behind someone else that was getting blocked so that he was out of position and out of the play. Like he was afraid of getting involved in the play.
All season this guy was killing us and it was a LONG season. Honestly, of everything I saw on Monday, Moto is my biggest concern going forward. We have no one behind him that is ready and we need him to perform.
Beyond that I think most everything can be overcome to maintain a great season, even at QB.

Bud can't play for him and often times, even with great athletes who seem built for a position, you can't teach instincts. Tyler was a walk on with phenomenal instincts and Williams really put it together last season as well. Motuapuaka seems to have the physical tools but even when he tries to be aggressive his instincts fail to put him in the right spot or get him off blocks. I'm sure Bud isn't teaching those things and hoped they would improve as he got more reps. Seems like a similar case to Joel Caleb on offense.

It's a function of the style of defense we play. In the running game, our LB's aren't employed in the standard read-and-react style. They're instead attacking gaps and helping spill the ball carrier to the free hitter (usually whip or rover). In the passing game our LB's mostly blitz, and sometimes play man coverage.
At the NFL level the LB's are 99% read-and-react systems, have to be able to play zone D far more than man coverage. So in a sense our system is almost a complete opposite for LBs. So good HS LB's either aren't going to be that great in our system or pass us over to play in more of a pro-style defense.
At the risk of downvotes and not trying to open up a can of worms or even try to re-up this discussion, but the name Shai McKenzie still just makes me cringe a little inside for obvious reasons. Not saying he's not an asset in the least but; the guy's a baller. But it will be a little tough for me to root for him going forward. If what some of my #sources told me about the Reavis situation is indeed accurate, I'm not sure why Shai was not immediately permanently dismissed from the team. I know Reavis isn't technically permanently dismissed, but still.

That's the thing...he wont do it...I dunno why...but we've seen it time and time again, the best he'll do run up to the guy and stand in front of him...
while I agree with the notion of next man up, and making sure backup QBs are ready to step in and be effective, I still would have seriously preferred to see Brewer play the entire year because I think THAT would have truly shown us "what Lefty can do" as an OC. I'm not sure this year will show us Lefty's full capability as an OC and that is a shame. I do think he'll have to earn his paycheck as a QB coach though, more so than as an OC.
Lefty honestly has not had a break. He hasn't had the same QB in back to back seasons since what...2007 or something. At VT he has had 3 new QBs starting in 3 years. This includes year 1 when he had a super talented, physically gifted LT in his Sr year when LT had absolutely zero WR, TE, RB, FB, or OL help and probably his best weapon TE lost for the year; a transfer (Brewer) that had only 1 month of real practice before starting the season (with two true freshmen starting WRs, a r-frosh starting TE, a rebuilt OL (with 3rd OL coach in 3 years) and a season filled with major catastrophic injuries to our OL, RB (and a pretty banged up QB all season long); and now in his 3rd year...he finally gets his man ready to play after what many have said was a tremendous off-season of preparation and hard work and look what's happened. He loses his high caliber starting QB for half or all the season in the first game. I honestly don't know how good an OC Lefty is - but I do know for a fact that he has had some serious bad luck. I hope he is given a chance to groom Motley, Lawson, Joshua Jackson, and other Hokie QBs so we can someday actually find out what he has.

dude, sorry but you have absolutely NO idea how the game would have played out if Brewer didn't get injured. Because nobody will ever know. The injury changed everything completely. The game was over when he got hurt. VT knew it. OSU knew it. Everyone Hokie fan that actually knows our team knew it, and every OSU fan knew it and they all breathed a huge sigh of relief (based on what they knew Brewer had done to OSU over his first 6 quarters). You are certainly entitled to your opinion thinking we would have lost, but I totally disagree as I think we would have won it. And my opinion is as valid as yours. As long as Brewer was playing, it would have been a close game going into the end of regulation, and at that point it's just comes down to momentum and players making plays, and we had as good a shot as OSU of winning (maybe even a better shot because OSU might have gone conservative at the end, or they may have gone risky and made a bonehead play, or they might have started having flashbacks of last year's defeat at our hands, they would have called different plays at different times, our D wouldn't have been gassed at the end (and our DBs maybe wouldn't have cramped up), maybe OSU's D would have been on the field the entire 2nd half, the Lane stadium crowd would not have been taken out of the game and Lane might just have completely and totally overwhelmed OSU's ability to play effectively on offense, OSU players might have gotten skittish knowing the game was on the line and maybe turned the ball over, - YOU DON'T KNOW what would have happened. And neither does anyone else. Try erasing from your mind everything that transpired after Brewer was hurt. Erase the two VT turnovers. Erase all the positive plays made by OSU. There is absolutely no guarantee any of those things would have happened. The end.
