Watching that clip of Sam's run, if Brewer had just blocked #8, he could have been off for a TD. Maybe at least. It is a FB running 50 yards. It's likely someone would have caught up to him, but still, so close. Not a play you expect to see though where a block from the QB 12 yards downfield could have changed it.

We have real questions at the Mike spot, but I have no doubt that our defense will return to its normal performance over the next few weeks and into conference play.
Brewer played very well against OSU, if any other QB on the roster can play close enough to that level then I'll tolerate a month long QB controversy if and when Brewer returns

Seriously, though, it looks like Searels and Co. have been putting in some work and I am very happy about that. French, can you explain what a "chip" block is? In the clip, to my untrained eye, it just looks like Teller runs downfield to make the block (which he does rather nicely, possible hold aside). Does this mean he sort of screens the DT into Gallo?
Guys, let's be clear about one thing here: Motley was not put in a position to succeed against OSU. To come in losing to the best team in the country is not a spot from which we should judge his abilities as a QB. Now, there's a reason Brewer is the starter, but seeing so many people express a lack of confidence in Mot because of Monday is just silly to me. He may not light the world on fire, but it's hard to believe he won't be much better when he isn't thrust into that situation. Personally, I'm hoping for big things from Lawson, but at this point things are very much feast or famine for him. I thought Loeffler more than earned his money as an OC on Monday (anyone who thought he didn't call a good game up until Brewer got hurt is fooling themselves), now it's time for him to earn his money as a QB coach.

AM continues to struggle. Add this with our struggles with our new safeties, and you have a recipe for a bad year, defensively.
We are not going to be able to rely on the defense to bail us out this year. Add in the loss of Brewer and suddenly our high hopes turns to dread.

Yes, they gave up a lot of yards and points, but let's look at their opponent. On every snap, the Buckeyes had 2-4 skill players that will likely be drafted on the first day, definitely within the first 3 rounds. Jones, Elliott, Miller, Thomas...they are all elite talents. How many teams can say that they have 4 Heisman candidates on the roster and one of them is on the bench? This doesn't even count the All-American offensive linemen. The sky isn't falling. It's the first game against the best team in the nation.
Brewer was outstanding Monday night. Any QB controversy will be purely in the minds of a select group of fans... Probably the same group that wanted Leal to start.
We through Tyrod into the LSU game and burned his red-shirt and I think he turned out pretty good. I would have put him the game, so he can get a feel of how the big boys play. He would be my starter agianst Furman. He needs to get up to speed sooner than later.
Man, that's exciting. And for the first time I can remember, I'm talking about our offensive line. Not a recruit or one player having a decent game or knocking a couple people down, but the offensive line played well in pass protection and in the run game for most of the night against one of the toughest defenses in the country. Oh, and every single guy should be back next year. Exciting now, exciting for later. When Brewer gets back we might be in for a special November. Let's hope we can weather the storm until then.
Pump the brakes. What did Motley do that warrents benching him for Lawson? Lets look at the facts:
1. Motley earned the backup spot, not Lawson (otherwise, the depth chart would reflect this)
2. Motley scored! It took 3 drives against one of the top defenses in the country (and top teams). Wow, he must really suck \s

We have some issues with our inside linebackers and our corners flat out got smoked. I thought the offense has made some strides so far but with Brewer going down, this is a huge set back. What I saw from Motley wasn't very impressive. If the playbook with him at QB is going to be reduuced severly, teams will start pinning the ears back and bring the house every time. I truly hope they look at all options at QB, even it includes playiing Lawson, because what's important now is winning.

# | Locker Room Wrap: Hokies' Defense Befuddled by OSU Blocking Schemes, Playmakers Coming out of this game, everyone, and rightly so, is lamenting Brewer's injury. But that injury did in fact overshadow what was a pretty poor performance defensively. Running the Bear with press coverage has its risks. When it works, and everyone does their job, it absolutely shuts down the offense. And yes shutting down the run is priority number one. But one missed tackle or one missed assignment and there is no one to back anyone up. And the result is a big play.
Sure the OSU guys are talented and athletic. But this same thing happened last year, all too often, with teams that were less athletic. We had this problem last year, particularly in the Miami and Boston College games. I just hope this is not a predictor of things to come. Let us trust this is not a pattern developing.
He has three games against lower tier opponents to get the offense in shape. After that, if it's still not clicking for at least most of our ACC lineup, that's on Lefty.
If Motley is our only option due to the others being inexperienced, I will give Lefty a coaching redshirt for this year.
I expect a better showing than last year on the averages. That's not much to ask, with or without Brewer.
I appreciate the perspective here. Its way too easy to fall into despair when you literally spend the entire offseason looking forward to one game rather than the season itself. So we lost to the champs, we werent even supposed to be competitive, you can damn well be sure we had Buckeye fans everywhere nervous. Yes Brewer was critical to the offense, but still, one player does a football team not make. Lets see how things look moving forward. I hope the defense comes back out with a bruised ego and play like their hair is on fire the rest of the season.
I'm fine with Lawson getting some playing time, but if he's playing well, we could be looking at a QB controversy when Brewer gets back. That is what I don't want to see.
Far too similar to last year with ECU for a couple of plays near the end there. Hope it was just exhaustion.
Alright, fun question that I've been wrestling with over the last 24 hours or so. Brewer is down. This was Loeffler's season to prove himself. His last 2 years have been lackluster, but showed some promise. Brewer's first half was very promising for his abilities and this season. The makings of success were there. So...how will you evaluate him for the rest of the season? Obviously we'll consider how well Motley does and how prepared he is, but we also have to remember that Motley is not a polished QB even though he's spent 3 years with Loeffler. After that, I suppose we have to look at how well the offense runs as it is designed for whoever is QB going forward. I suppose that will be rather vanilla if we have Durkin or Lawson back there until the second half of the season at least. So again, when you look back at this season, how will you review Loeffler? Will you give him any credit for losing his starting QB for at least the first half of the season? One half of one game can't be enough to give the guy a pass, but how much leeway do you give him?
Few penalties until late
And one penalty total on the offensive line. That is huge.
Honestly, jumping up and down on the bleachers is a pain in the ass. It made me nervous doing it when I went back as a fan. And if you just jump on the ground, you can put a lot more force behind your plants on the 1st beat of each measure, just to give it that extra oomph.
The non-call on 65 on the Elliot TD run blew my mind. My understanding has always been if the defender tries to turn away from the block to pursue a ball carrier, you have to disengage. It's pretty obvious that Dadi could have made a touchdown-saving tackle if 65 had disengaged his block, and the blocker was not positioned between the defender and the ball carrier. 65 was clearly pulling Dadi back toward him to prevent the tackle. Ergo, holding.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that's why we lost, and we still overcame this TD going into the half, but man, I don't know how much more blatant you can be. I'm sure this will be in the package of plays Beamer sends to the ACC officials this week.
I loved the RB's and Oline. You know we can pull an offense like that and just when they start bringing guys in the box, play action deep! To Sam Rodgers!

It's a complicated problem, for sure. Excluding the big money Power5 schools, some schools focus on getting the top players no matter what. Look at the Little Sisters up in CHOville. Time Cop and crew have pulled in some really good talent, but coaching has been sub-sub-subpar. (What a waste!)
Some schools focus on getting the top players who fit their system, like us. The problem with that is when you miss out on those players, you either get Plan B, Plan C, or no guys at all. That puts you in a bad spot, like with MLB. Because we are such a system team, especially on D, a lot of the top guys (5* & 4*) don't think they'll fit and go elsewhere. (I'm talking 'bout those who recently went to F$U and Roll Damn Tide.)
On the O side of the equation, perception can become reality. Most people think we are a run first, run last, run always unless we are down a bunch of points offense. Not true. We are a ball control O. So receivers typically don't want to play for a team that doesn't sling the rock all over the yard, because you don't get Dez Bryant money if you ain't getting on SCtop10. Paul Johnson has a similar problem. He's been lucky to get some darn good WRs who know their primary job is to block for the triple option.
To be honest, the previous O staff missed A LOT in recruiting. One guy basically didn't recruit, and another didn't recruit his unit hard enough. I like the current O staff. They came in at a disadvantage personnel-wise, and are trying to dig themselves out of this hole. The unfortunate clamoring on the retirement front for HCFB by fans and media doesn't help either. The team looked to be turning a corner, which would help recruiting, but now we'll have to see how things play out.
If there is one thing our staff has to sell, it's playing time. Look how many youngsters are getting out on the field early because they are better than what we already have.
187 yards came on 3 plays. There were 10 plays of 20+ yards. Eliminate those plays going forward & we're looking good.
