Agreed but in 07 when LSU basically did the same thing to us the defense did go on to finish #4 in total defense. Hopefully this defense gets a wake up call and won't have to face a 250 pound QB again that our DEs bounce off of.
Neither defense on the field looked close to being the #1 defense in the country.
Even if Brewer can come back, we've seen enough of him to suggest that he's both the best passer on the roster and prone to be hurt in one way or another. Don't get me wrong, he's a tough kid and can play through injury, but I'm not betting on him for a full season, or, at this point, maybe even a half season.
I do like the idea of getting Lawson reps, but I haven't seen much of Motley up to this point in his career and have never seen anything but a recruiting video of Durkin or Lawson. Motley could be Bryan Randall 2.0 for all I know, which would make me very happy. Durkin could be Belldozer 2.0. Lawson could be Vick 3.0.
At this point, I'd just like to see what we've got.

Hopefully they were impressed. On a somewhat related note, I wonder what Urban's recruiting is like. I mean pretty impressive to see the thing about Elliott and his recruitment. Born and raised a Mizzou fan. Always thought he was going to play for Mizzou. He said that Urban asked him what he was going to do when he handed him the crystal football. I mean Urban was already saying, "We're winning a national championship. Are you coming with us?" basically. I know our goal is to get there and I'm sure somewhere along the lines our guys say something to the effect of "we want you to help us get to where we belong again".....channeling their inner donald trump "make VT great again". However, Urban has won national titles before and knows what it takes. Again, hopefully we can grab some of the bigger recruits. Yulee would be a huge grab. However I don't think we start reversing the trend of being good but not great in recruiting until a new HC is hired and hopefully it's an exciting hire.....like Chad Morris.....or Urban Meyer after he gets tired of being at OSU in 4 years or so.

Flipping Yulee to Tech would be huge. Poor middle LB recruiting has helped get us to where we are today. He would be a grest addition to pair with Lydon from last years class.
This! I always tell people that the best part of Lane games happens before kickoff, regardless of who's playing.
Having had a good night's sleep on Tuesday night, my feeling about the game now is that it was our best showing as far as games where we open the season against a highly ranked opponent. Few penalties until late, good play at most positions, and had a chance to win it before Brewer went down. I don't think I could have asked for a better game with realistic expectations.
Ok well comparing any other team's (aside from maybe Alabama) recruiting techniques to Ohio State is like comparing a pretty girl to Kate Upton: no matter how hard you try, you'll probably never quite get to that point. With that said, go check out how great you have to be just to step on to the field for the Buckeyes. Curtis Grant, for example, was a 5 star recruit that barely started his senior year, much less the previous 3 years. Ohio State's depth is unheard of. Kendall was barely a 5 star recruit coming out of high school and he started in the Bama game in 2013. All that to say, it's pretty freaking easy for an OSU fan to question VT's depth when they've been spoiled by how much unbelievable talent they bring in year in and year out.
The east was pretty loud the entire game, at least anywhere near the student section. I'm a student now and one of my buddies I sit with was at his first Hokie game Monday and he was still starting LET'S GOO chants with under 2 minutes to play. Granted he tried a few of those while our offense was on the field (again first game), but point being the east side boyz put on for the 540 last night.
Maybe he can get the offense Clicking so that the defense can Settle down a bit and catch their wind.

I travel once a year at a minimum for enter sandman because it is Hokie awesomeness! Love the tailgating (even 7am tequila shots) and more importantly the actual game. However, the entrance is so electric it is worth the price of admission by itself.
I say we leave it alone for the most part. Maybe there are a few pages in the playbook that you move to the back of the binder, but Motley has practiced the same plays as Brewer throughout the spring, summer, and fall. Maybe not with the 1st team but I feel that he knows what he is supposed to do. I truly feel he had an "oh crap" moment when he saw Brewer laying on the turf holding his arm and it got to him. Bring him out against Furman and don't hold anything back, we may not be as bad off as we think.
The most frustrating thing about this game to me was the poor officiating, particularly the missed holds on the Ohio State offensive line. Just looking at the clips of the big plays off the reddit post-game thread:
OSU's first TD has a slight hold on #54 (although it didn't really affect the play) and what looks like a hold on #50, the center.
The 80 yd TD by Zeke had one of the worst holds I have ever seen in my life on #65. #50 was also holding.
Third TD was clean.
Fourth TD by Braxton again, #50 with the blatant hold at the top of the screen at the beginning.
Fifth TD was clean.
Final TD near the middle of the screen the OL had Mihota's arms locked up.
There were many more, but those are just from the highlights. I'm sure the officials let us get by with things, but all of our big plays were clean.
Between the refs and Brewer getting hurt, this game just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Several Ohio State players also showed little class. My seat was behind the OSU bench, and #43 Darron Lee was taunting the Hokie fans. One of our fans yelled at him for the taunt and Lee proceeded to argue with the fan. Three other OSU players joined in the taunting. A number of their players acted similarly over the course of the game, although most of them were good. Still, they are #1. They should have more class than to taunt an opponent they were favored to beat.

But if things go south again and we're sitting on another .500 record, I wouldn't be surprised if his retirement plans and his eventual successor aren't announced after the season. Just got the feeling with some of those Hokie Vision videos during the game that the process has begun behind the scenes.

Moto played yesterday? But seriously, I hope you are right and OSU is as good as advertised, but in the second half we made them look a lot better than they are/were. Especially with the suspensions.
After seeing what they said about Motely I'm sure they have all the confidence that he can lead the team. However I bet we see Lawson's playing time increase each week, providing he performs of course. If he excels he may take over the job by mid season. Excited either way.

Not exactly a stellar opening week for the LPD. Don't get me wrong, Ohio State is good, but our defense got worked in 3 of 4 quarters last night.
And if we cannot tackle a strong high talent QB we're in for a long night in Atlanta this year as well.
