I don't recall anything like that in the Johnson era. We typically focus on stopping the A-back first, and then forcing the pitch.

It looked like we were doing almost the opposite of that last night. We were not "hammering the QB at the LOS," but were trying (or so it appeared) to make him indecisive on the pitch/keep and therefore slower.

GT will kill that. When it comes to the option, Paul Johnson eats pancakes off Urban's head.

First, thanks to TKP for the great articles lately. The site keeps getting better and better in terms of content. And, as many have stated, I am becoming a better educated fan because of the Xs and Os articles. Thanks all!

What a tale of "two games" (before and after the Brewer injury). After processing things a bit, I'm choosing to stop and celebrate what this Hokie team did last night. We faced the most talented team VT is going to face for many years to come - I'm confident of that. Yet, Hokie Nation and our team showed up big-time last night. Of course, it didn't end the way any of us dreamed/hoped it might. But, I have to say, when we went in at halftime up 17-14, I was beaming with pride in this team. What a 2nd quarter comeback! And, as others have said today, I am confident that's a much different 2nd half if Brewer doesn't suffer that injury. I don't think we would have ultimately won, but we had a serious fighting chance with Brewer in the game. It's a shame, a true shame.

I woke up early this morning for a business flight. As I write this, after traversing planes and airports all day, I am truly sorry that I chose not to wear my VT polo today. I woke up still emotionally "hung over" from the loss, and the loss of Brewer. It was just too raw and I didn't want to have people making comments about OSU in the airports, etc.

I truly regret that decision now. As I've reflected on the game, I swell with pride when I think of our bunch of 3-star guys standing toe to toe with the 5-star "Goliath" last night. And we truly did through 2.5 quarters. I wish now that I had worn my VT gear today, so I could walk a step taller today through the airport. Ask me about the game last night, ask me about my team. I'm proud of these Hokies.

So, maybe I don't have the same hopes (for this season) that I had before Brewer went down. But, I'm still really proud of this team. And, I'm honestly excited to see what CFB, BF and SL can make out of the long season ahead.

I hear you, but that statement was made immediately following the game, in a press conference where he was looking pretty emotional. That could change after he sits down with CFB and the rest of the offensive coaching staff and discuss in more detail. Emphasis on could...

There have been a lot of comments about how people thought Chris and Rece were the same person and I haven't been able to decipher which ones were serious and which ones were just joking.

I feel like that's a great gameplan coming into a matchup like this for the first game of the season. VT probably prepared for stopping JT in the option offense, and stopping Cardale in the power run. Throw in Cardale to get VT into one defensive stance, and then run the one they're no longer looking for. Advantage OSU.

The defense gave up 42 points. Maybe they got deflated when Brewer went out. But they gave up way too many big plays. This plagued them last year as well. I know Foster likes to run the Bear with press coverage. But one person misses a tackle and it's over. These missed tackles and missed assignments happened too much last year, and happened too much last night.

That's what was frustrating though...what made Cardale successful last season was a power running attack going right at the nose of the defense, not the edge and certainly not the option. There's no question VT was taking Zeke away in the option...But they shouldn't even be running the option with Cardale because he's just not an option QB. He can break tackles and scramble and run or run a draw...But he's got to have a path and the ability to get a head of steam to be an effective runner. Option doesn't allow him that. They should've been running the ball straight at VT. When they did they had success. He breaks one tackle and he's gone against the zero coverage. Averaged 11+ yards per carry. Keep giving it to him! I said it on a pregame thread on here before...JT and Cardale offer you two pretty different styles...and it's like they ran the JT offense with Cardale in.

IF Lawson isn't going to redshirt, play him, no need for him just to sit on his ass and not get the experience for this year, next year, and next. Motley is never going to cut it, and I don't think Durkin is ever going to see much playing time as our starting QB. Lawson doesn't have to start right away, but get him enough reps to give him the experience to give him the feel of the game.

Do not give up on the guy who missed significant portions last season. Trey might surprise you. One game does not a player make.
