The original comment was slightly sarcastic but is still somewhat related. Making sure the players get 9 hours of good sleep is great. If the players are worn out from practices, being able to sleep for 9 hours wouldn't be hard. While that is not the issue of the article, it is not completely off base.

Giving the players bedtimes and having that tracked is something I am not a big fan of. While modern college sports are a business, especially in the SEC, the real purpose should be to prepare these kids for adulthood. Part of that should be self discipline and time management. The coaches should be telling them to make sure they get the sleep but to track it and enforce it is babysitting and micromanaging these kids. Time management is one of the biggest things college teaches people IMO and being a member of a high profile, very demanding program is a great tool for teaching them but at the same time, they limit the control the players have. They have their days, including time to do schoolwork scheduled out for them. Micromanaging every aspect of their lives for 4-5 years is not preparing them for being completely on their own. Just my .02

OSU: W, 31-28. I'm sticking with my wildly optimistic prediction because last year I predicted that we'd win and it fucking happened.

@Purdue: W, 38-6. Purdue has no established QB, RB, or WR. Bad juju against this D. The run game finally gets going, with Coleman and Edmunds both going for 100+. VT scores early and often to put this one away in the first half.

@ECU: W, 27-24. With Carden, Hardy, & Worthy gone (as well as OC Riley), the purple pirates don't have the ability to punch VT in the mouth like they did last year. However, their D is tougher than expected and just a week after a breakout performance, the run game struggles mightily. Evoking memories of his 2014 opening week heroics, Brewer puts the team on his back and leads a late drive for the win.

Pitt: L, 10-21. I hate Pitt. I hate losing to Pitt. I hate that half my family is from there and I hear about it every time they win. I hate that Conner isn't already in the NFL where he belongs, and that he'll probably run for 200+ on us. I hate this prediction.

NCSU: W, 30-21. I'm not sold on them yet, but NCSU definitely worries me. Brissett shines, but the D shuts the 'pack out in the red zone. Despite the short week, VT gets it done on a night that should be reserved for high schools and crappy mountain west games.

@scUM: W, 38-10. Payback time, canes. Kaaya is good but he's surrounded by question marks, most importantly on the OL. Nicolas, Maddy, & co. have a field day in this one as VT gives CAG a golden shower send-off.

dook: W, 33-12. It's time for dook fans to go back to spending their fall Saturdays wondering when basketball season starts.

@BC: L, 10-24. In inexplicable yet somehow entirely predictable fashion, VT lays another turd in Chestnut Hill. WTF is it with BC?!

@GT: W 26-19. Because Fuck CPJ.

University of No Class(es): W, 35-31. UNC gets a couple late scores to make it look a lot closer than it is.

@loluva: W, 37-13. To avoid any last-minute controversy, London calls all three second-half timeouts in the first 2 minutes of the 3rd quarter. It doesn't matter as the Hokies roll. A week later, VT wins again when Littlepage decides not to fire London until at least one more season of mediocrity is in the books.

VT goes 10-2 and wins the coastal tiebreaker thanks to victories against the canes and jackets. Meanwhile, Clemson takes down F$U to take the Atlantic title.

@ACCCG: W, 42-21. Clemson makes the mistake of overlooking the Hokies while talking about what they're going to do in the playoffs. The VT defense opens a family-size can of whoopass to avenge three straight embarrassing losses to the Tigers. Bud Foster >>> Brent Venables.

@Peach Bowl: W, 17-16. In a matchup of two top-10 defenses, VT knocks off Georgia by blocking the game-tying XP with no time left on the clock.

I lived in Hunter's Ridge. One 4th of July, we were at the soccer fields to watch the fireworks. Decided to swing by Food Lion for beer. There was an octopus on the floor in the frozen foods aisle. I don't think Food Lion sold octopus. Someone brought him with them and must have forgotten it. Poor lost octopus :/

You could be right. ...but man, the Sugar Bowl was my first Virginia Tech game ever, leaving the Superdome and having that song play hurt to the core.

Very few people knew about the songbook version with this song. It's not fair to lump band members and band alumni into the same group as the people who were responsible and those who knew and did nothing.

While I agree it is unfair to assume all members of the band, or any members of a group, into one homogeneous, guilty group; unfortunately all members get tarred by the same brush deservedly or not. that is why it is important to eradicate such behavior and incumbent on leadership to take decisive actions to ensure it doesn't occur or isn't repeated. Having some band members say "It didn't bother me" or "It was no big deal" does not solve the problem; and even if they genuinely weren't bothered by the goings on doesn't mean others weren't or that the behavior was an acceptable image to project of our university and its band.

As a sage coach once told me, "if you let idiots and knuckleheads define your team everyone will assume you are one as well."

Time for my two cents though. I am a bit shocked at the backlash given for this post and where things went from there. Some people need to just let the moderator handle the moderation.

I read in another article (here) that NLRB has no jurisdiction over public schools, so this is indeed limited to only private schools.

Nobody outside the band can say with 100% certainty how many people in the band knew about it, and there is a pretty strong motivation to disavow any knowledge of it.

This isn't a story about one song, it's a story about a very strong band culture and tradition clashing with a newly-found societal intolerance for political incorrectness. We know for a fact that strong group associations can be so strong as to allow people to overlook the most atrocious behavior.

I'll grant you that Hitler was an equal opportunity asshole, and he had no qualms wiping out any race or ethnicity that varied from his Aryan ideal. But the Third Reich was propped up specifically on a foundation of blaming the Jews. Mein Kampf is a manifesto of everything the Jews had supposedly done to undermine the integrity of the German state. And in justifying the genocide of other groups, Hitler and the Nazis invariably tied it to these groups' supposed ties to the Jews.

As for saying only the people physically there would feel the insult more deeply, let me just give a practical example. If someone were to make a joke about 4/16, anyone could (and should) take offense to it. But as Hokies, wouldn't you agree that we feel it more deeply, even if we ourselves had graduated prior to the event and weren't physically present for it? It's become ingrained as a part of our cultural identity, and people who aren't affiliated with this culture, while feeling justifiable outrage, don't feel it exactly the same way we do. That was the point I was trying to make.

I was most impressed with Gaines and Fullwood. They both look the part and seemed to be quick off the snap. don't be shocked to see one or both this year. Side not Isiah Ford is a man among boys. enjoy this year and next because he will be playing on sundays.
