I have always felt they over-recruit for talent, and under recruit for character. To many egos to play as a team. Maybe a great coach can get them to overcome their egos to achieve up to their team potential, as they did in the past, or maybe those coaches were as concerned with character as talent.

I read that in Sunday's paper. I enjoyed it.

It made me really want to see the memorial of the shooting. Gotta do that the next time I am through there. Like everyone, that affected me deeply. I am tired of people getting massacred who have no means of defending themselves.

I was not aware of the falls. The picture in the article was awesome. Gotta see that one.

But all of that was just window dressing for the author to tell the Buckeye faithful where they can get well oiled before, during, and after the game. Interesting that the one restaurant owner was a scUM fan.

Later, the gobbler evolved into a less turkeylike HokieBird. But today's Hokie looks a lot like a turkey. Just check out the giant bronze Hokie in the lobby of the Cassell Coliseum basketball arena. 'Nuff said.

Your mascot is a nut

Been to a ton of stadiums - and this is where I begin to talk out of both sides of my mouth. The last really, really loud crowd I heard at Ohio Stadium was vs. Wisconsin in 2013. My son and I stood and screamed our heads off (like everyone else - except the 2 old grouches behind us who kept yelling at us to sit down) when Wisky had the ball. They had 5 false starts and made plenty of mistakes. I don't know whether the noise had much, or everything, to do with it. As fans we like to think we are participating and helping. When I played, I rarely heard anything - but I never played in a place like Ohio or Lane Stadium either.

My gut feeling is that stadiums, atmospheres, fan noise, pre-game talk, and things along that line have role in encouraging and motivating a team that is PLAYING WELL, and are zero influences when that team isn't playing well, or maybe a negative influence when there are grumblings or boos. If I am correct about that, then Urban's staff and players vs. Frank's staff and players is what really determines the game.

Here's what my coaches always told my team when we headed into a loud and tough environment: "Start fast, get up on them, keep pounding them until we call you off, and I promise you, they will be quiet and tame." Looking at that picture of the lone Hokie fan in the sea of scarlet and gray from last year's game, I think that says it all.

Why don't we suggest that Whit request a Metallica version of Tech Triumph? They could do a direct fade from Sandman to Tech Triumph. This would be a special occasion thing, though. Don't want to upset the band folks.

I wish you had checked with me before buying that sweatshirt.

NEVER BUY NEW GEAR BEFORE THE MIAMI GAME! From Section G.12-1a of the Karma code.

I bought a sweet hoodie at the bookstore on a fateful Saturday night back in 2005. I still wear it... in North Carolina.

Not to mention risk of fan injury. I remember when the original Skipper misfired (I think it was my junior year...may have been sophomore). It was during a military ball, and they fired off skipper near the chapel, but apparently put too large a charge in, and it blew out the safety plugs on the barrel. One of them went through a third (I think) floor window at Slusher. I was in my dorm room in Vawter, and it shook the building.

edit: After re-watching the video below (it should be required for all incoming freshmen, imho), I'm pretty sure it was a spring military ball in my junior year (1982) that ended the career of Skipper I. I remember the football games the following year being strangely quiet because of the lack of artillery fire.

I appreciated the tone and upbeat assessment of the article. I do think our visitors will be charmed quite nicely until game time. After that, well, we all know what comes then. That six hour drive home will seem like 16.

Seriously. I think this would be a good situation mutually. I had forgotten the Jets picked up Brandon Marshall and Devin Smith out of OSU. Going to have a great defense. Might not be a bad idea at all.
