Watching this gif, do you think she hit him? She may have intended to, but she's too drunk and under duress to threaten him in any significant manner. Then he unloaded on her.

I'm curious how much your viewpoint is theoretical vs what is seen in this situation.

I guess I just don't like the argument that this is the only option- or even the "responsible" option.

He had every opportunity to walk away. That is the responsible and correct option. In my opinion violence, especially not in self-defense of one's life or from significant injury, is not the responsible decision. (Let's not talk about other circumstances than this one, as that will unfortunately get into dangerous waters for this forum, I think).

My statement is simple: he had the opportunity to be the better person and the responsible party and walk away. He did not, and therefore they are both in the wrong. There is not always one wrong and one right, and just because one person was wrong does not make the other right.

Escalate what? If i'm being hurt, I have every right to do whatever is necessary to protect myself. I'd argue the escalation has already occurred and now i'm just trying to ensure I don't get hurt.

Again, this is if someone - no matter what gender - attacks me first. I'm not advocating hitting first, but if someone does, then i'm going to do what I need to do protect myself.

The only time to hit a woman is if you are at a real risk of bodily harm. He was not at a real risk of getting injured. If she did all that then he shoved her away to stop the whole thing, I could get behind his cause but punching her in the face is way across the line.

You see a slap, I see a punch. That's semantics. I don't think the fact that she hit him first excuses his response. He could have easily walked away, and that would have ended any repercussions right there.

If someone attacks you, it is safe to assume they are doing everything in their power to hurt you.

You don't need to stop, take out your calibrated torque wrench and gauge the power behind the assault and then attack them with the exact same force and technique.

The first individual punched and kicked, the second individual slapped.

So no, you are not responsible to ensure the first attacked receives a sufficiently poor response as to make sure they receive the identical amount of damage as done in the initial attack.

That does not provide carte blanche to pull out weapons unless you feel your life is in danger.

The point of the response is to halt the attack. You ALWAYS have the right to halt the attack.
Mission accomplished.
