No disagreement with either of you. He's not an elite Watkins-type athlete who will consistently burn guys one-on-one at the line of scrimmage, and he makes his money by running good routes and high-pointing the ball. Still, he started doing things during the spring he didn't do during the season - namely putting a move on a guy and getting some YAC. Is he Switzer or Watkins or Royal? Probably not. But I think he's gonna be a pretty darn good Ford.
I think everyone is being WAY too hard on Pierce. Big men take time, and the ones that don't are at UK, Duke, and Kansas. Guy is way better than anyone gives him credit for offensively. By his junior year he'll be a 12 point, 7 reb guy IMHO.
I don't mean to be the materialistic weasel of this group, but does anyone know how this will affect the money VT owed him when he retired? Is Tech still obligated to pay his next-of-kin for the remainder of his contract?
And of course, much love and prayers for his family.
Eh, players do crazy things in practice all the time. I've never seen that out of him in a game. Love the guy, but I don't see him as an elite yards after catch guy.
I heard the new indoor facility still needed a name...
I'm excited for our wide receivers... Seems like we've gotten a good coach for them to develop into 3 or 4 Royal's, Davis's and Boykins's
I am sure the practice battles between Kendall and him are something to behold. Hopefully our coaches are selling WR recruits on the opportunity to go against our #DBU secondary as a way to help prepare them for the next level.

just thought it was a good fit for an Iverson meme lol. don't recall seeing the screen in the scrimmage so can't really make a comment one way or another about his burst. to me he's not a guy that is ever going to get a lot of separation he's about route running and body control.
As much as this misses the point that he's shown the speed and shiftiness to take a screen pass to the house, I chuckled. Take a leg.

I think you have to give credit to the guy.
VT athletics came a long way under his leadership. Yes we gripe about the nooners, the ridiculous number of ECU games on the schedule, and the inexplicable way Greenberg was fired, but you have to look at all the progress that was made. Some of which included, in no particular order:
-- VT in the ACC.
-- VT having played for a national championship in football.
-- The great facilities at VT that he advocated/planned/built.
-- The fact that Beamer and Foster stuck around in spite of other opportunities and continued
to build the program.
-- The premier games and bowls VT has been to.
-- The progress of VT men's basketball. In spite of the setbacks, it's on a good trajectory.
-- The hiring of some awesome coaches. VT has won 19 ACC championships in a variety of
sports.
-- The excellent financial shape the program has always been in.
In spite of our high expectations and gripes, the good definitely outweighed the bad.

Do you have any data to support the claim that "games against high level competition increase injuries"?
I understand why we might think that is the case. But I haven't seen any evidence. Maybe we should ask Andy Bitter. He seems to have a lot of time on his hands.
Regarding the other point, yes, of course if your starters are off the field much of the game you run a much lower risk of starters getting injured. But how interesting can a game be if our starters are off the field for much of the game?
Rest in Peace, Mr. Weaver. You definitely gave us many happy memories, with your stewardship of Hokie Athletics.
I hope he's as smooth as a thunderbird and tough as a mustang

Wow. Very sad to hear. Still shocked from when I first saw the tweet this morning.
For every one thing that we gave him crap for, he did ten great things for this university and its athletic department.

I think what will happen first is that the power conferences will swell to a point where the conference championships become de facto playoff games.

I think a lot of that has to do with the surgery. Whatever they did was pretty serious, I dont think it has really slowed him down so much as it makes it hard to talk.
Hopefully Bud has something special planned for him this year...
