I like to believe TT will run a classy organization and not try and funnel people to or from certain schools, but if a recruit asks him his opinion of Beamer and VT I'm sure he won't hold back
The ACC was all over our recruits in every sport that year. Word at the time was that Gary Williams was on the phone with Gus Gilchrist the day of the shooting telling him not to come to VT. Unsurprisingly, within a week, he was a decommit, and very soon thereafter a Maryland signee.
It's news for many reasons. He's the first active player to come out in America's most popular sport. He's setting a precedent in sports that it's ok to be openly gay and not have to hide it. It's a sign that times/opinions/perceptions are changing on the whole gay thing. There's other reasons but those should be able to get the point across as to why it's news.
You may not think it's a big deal yourself, but to say you don't understand why it's big news is kind of naive on your part. This is bigger than sports.
For perspective, my sister is gay, hates football and this made her cry tears of joy. It's pretty big man.
I'm sure that if this is made a no-no later on unless we were doing some seriously shady stuff like paying the coaches or spending a lot of time influencing the leagues we'd be fine. Right now there's nothing wrong with using it to our advantage, but just so we don't get in one of those given an inch and take a mile scenarios. Which I'd doubt Beamer would let get anywhere near happening.

Tyrod and Kam have instant validation, the same as Coach Moorehead. Not sure how may Thoroughbred coaches have Super Bowl rings, but I sure am glad Tyrod is spreading the good word of VT down in the 757 (or is in the 7v7 these days?)

In another five years -as low-key and out-of-the-spotlight this man is, it will be realized how pivotal and invaluable he is to that Seahawks defense and how great of a man he is more so off the field.
Vick may have achieved the mercurial heights of stardom/fandom as a VT alum and Mr. Smith may be the cornerstone of respect and class, and D-Hall could be known as the new breed of (physical/bigger) player for his position... But Kam (if this were a beauty contest) would win once judging rounded up the overall scores from the compensatory rounds as the runaway greatest Hokie.
