He can't prep, he was "reclassified" as a junior a few years ago so he's had 5 years to get the prerequisite GPA and SAT score.
The scuttlebutt last night was that Minor was in because he's found out what his SAT score was from the 1/23 test. It sounds like it was sufficient to get into VT with his current GPA and he will commit to us. If he didn't have that test score, a commitment to VT would have resulted in him having to go JUCO. That's why Marshall came up late, they can take partial qualifiers and VT can't.
just be glad we don't have stupid division names like "leaders" and "legends"

Was Searels also the OL coach that sent Benedict packing? My memory of the BB situation at UGA was that he was under performing in the weight room then got hurt and they didn't feel like he was rehabbing with sufficient urgency and they pushed him out. I can't remember how much of this was from VT sources and UGA sources.
Benedict was effectively made an example of at UGA, and it may have been when the new coach replaced Searels.
I think it sounds more like we're going to take the risk that he qualifies and is accepted by Admissions and/or that we would be willing to wait on him to prep like Fisher and Reid had to.
I can confirm this. He got a security clearance and said employer deemed it imprudent for him to continue doing so.

It's not so much that I want them there. It's more that that seems to be where Miami wants to be. Personally, my ideal situation would be the one you described... straight North-South, 9-game league schedule, and I wouldn't protect ANY rivalries. UNC would have to decide whether they want to play UVA and NC State, Duke and NC State, or UVA and Duke every year and the one they leave out is gonna have to be in the other division, showing up on their schedule three times every seven years. And when you think about it... 3/7 isn't all that bad. You're playing everyone in the other division pretty much every other year.
You could always put Miami in the north. Worked for the Senior Bowl.

What's your early guess for 2014 OL? I'm hoping Teller could get a starting spot.
the 5 Carolina schools make things tricky. it's not so much "UNC has to decide"...they could pick NCSU and uva, but then NCSU would say, what about Clemson? since there are 4 schools in NC, i'm ok with them protecting their rivalry games. all 10 other league members would be in a division with 2 of them allowing everyone to play at least one game per season in NC. the Pac12 allowed the 4 CA schools to play 2/4 of their crossover games every year vs one another, the B1G allowed Indiana and Purdue to protect their game, i think we would be ok allowing 2 games to be protected for 4 teams.
as far as Miami, they didn't seem to give 2 craps about playing BC every year, so i'm not so sure they really care about football being aligned with the north. as long as they are in the same league as teams from the northeast, Miami is happy.

In a lot of ways, this is tracking how most people thought it would:
1. Harrison is wavering and it will go down to the wire,
2. Isaiah Ford would be a great Harrison replacement and we look to be in good shape there,
3. We need Minor to complete a very nice LB haul of Keihn, T.Taylor and Minor. Looks like Minor has the test score he needs.....
4. Derrick Nnadi will be the difference between an A+ class by VT standards and an A or A- class
It was fun to think about guys like Isaiah McKenzie for a while, but he's now got the UGA offer he wanted. Kevin Bronson was a great addition and could help us for a very solid DL class of Mihota-Walker-Nnadi-Bronson with Sczerbek in support.
We'll see how it goes tomorrow, but this is pretty much where we thought we would be.

I think that these new coaches are doing a great job jump-starting the recruiting. We might not be in the top 10 in class rankings, but we never were, and the staff improves players better than any staff in the ACC. Hopefully we rope in some of the skill guys we are after, and of course Nnandi (sic?) would calm a lot of nerves. The good news is they saw the issues forming and took action to correct it. Might have been a few years too late, but better late than never.
Hell, I'm excited to see him.
It is the system. Bud Foster's defense requires a completely different set of fundamentals than the defensive line principles of a standard NFL 4-3 or 3-4. It is difficult to conceptualize, but guys who play defensive line and linebacker in the Virginia Tech defense are like quarterbacks that play in Urban Meyer's spread or Paul Johnson's flexbone. Players that worked in Bud's system don't always fit nicely into an NFL defense. The wide-tackle six front allowed Corey Moore to play wide and use his speed off the edge because you had defensive tackles and linebackers who could fit the gap to his inside. In the NFL, he would have needed to have responsibility for his gap on the inside, and at 220 pounds, he would have been dominated. The Hokies defensive tackles have been fireplug types who tended to be shorter and well suited for slanting and stunting and then getting underneath the blocker for leverage to fit their gap. The NFL wants defensive tackles who are either massive and can cover TWO gaps, or long athletic guys who can shoot gaps north-south. VT's defensive tackles don't make it in the NFL, and if a defensive end has success (Worilds and Tapp) they are usually moved back to a 3-4 outside linebacker and the transition is slow.
You see the same thing with VT's mike and backer positions. Both have straight ahead gap responsibility, where in the NFL 4-3 middle backers scrape sideline to sideline, and 3-4 inside backers can stack to avoid taking on blocks. Other than James Anderson, there has not been a single Hokie linebacker since Bud started coaching that has had a long productive NFL career as a starter. Great players like Adibi, Hall, and others have either been borderline back up guys or never even got a shot.
Right now, the Hokies front seven only has two guys starting in the NFL- Anderson as an inside linebacker and Worilds as a left outside linebacker in a 3-4. The LOLB lines up outside of the right tackle, which is the same alignment as Worilds was used at stud end at VT (so Pittsburgh found a way to get him where he is comfortable.) If you don't think every coach that recruits against VT uses this information against them, you are nuts. Without any direct knowledge, Hand and Brown went elsewhere because they know they have NFL talent and they want to be NFL-ready. If Nnadi goes to FSU, I'd bet that he would pick FSU for the same reason.
He still did it for a time after graduation, but his employer eventually told him he wasn't allowed to wear costumes and be a mascot anymore.

A recruit in '14-'15 is a much different target than in '06-'07 (thanks twitter etc.)
As with coaching, recruiting was stuck in its ways up until recently.
It will be interesting to see how these numbers change (improve) with the new coaches.
