Please forgive me for a brief rant:
Losing Grimes would be a lot more than just losing the immense coaching talent. It would show that the talented coaches at VT, when a program comes calling, can be cherry-picked with no resistance. Jim Weaver has done a lot of good for the program but refuses to open up the purse strings to pay coaches what they deserve, ESPECIALLY when competition comes calling. Maybe Frank isn't advocating for raises right now, or the results on the field over the last two years don't merit it, but Grimey leaving would be further signs of the program back-sliding instead of moving forward.
Sometimes I think the Sugar Bowl loss broke the football program's brain. It hasn't been the same since.

You stopped being you. You let people stick a finger in your face and tell you you're no good. And when things got hard, you started looking for something to blame, like a big shadow. Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you're hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done.

Ashame as the kid really did put up some numbers, and to me was the first real #1 WR we've had for a while.
We need a guy to come in like the kids at Clemson and Md did.... just light it up as a true Freshman and make the ACC quiver in fear of two or three more years of that kid.
Just to clarify, I wasn't inferring that @sonnykofax10 was a reputable source...I was mentioning that the Travis Haney mention/RT was the only real person who has acknowledged it and he said he hadn't heard of anything.
I'm not in full freakout mode yet. The worst thing is half of the people on those boards dislike the idea of hiring Grimes. They don't know how good they (hopefully won't) have it!
I think he had separated shoulders during time at VT. Was getting them treated after trying out for the NYG, NYJ this year. If I had to wager your money, I'd bet his shoulders were not right while at VT. Last thing you want to do is publicize it so that your opponents, the NFL, etc understands whats going on with the shoulders.
Took me like two years to rehab my one shoulder. I think he might have had two. I could raise my arm and have full extension but not much else... no dips very little military press, etc, etc. Lotsa pain when someone messed with them.
Not sure if you recall our video package versus the one that went viral, but it wasn't just blocking (although I have never seen a guy who time after time would not only not block, but be turned around walking to the huddle before his guy was tackled.) He also quit on routes, often. Or, he would quit on the route and he would be screaming at the official for a flag before the ball had even touched the ground. On several of those, if he just stays in stride he has a chance to catch the ball.
Right along with DeAngelo and Marcus. Good Riddance.
From a production standpoint, his 2012 receiving yardage total was the second best in Virginia Tech history.
Part of me sees his blocking in the infamous video and thinks "c'mon, man" but the other part of me wonders how many other players would grade out poorly in a video highlighting only their worst plays.
Maybe I'm just soft, but the guy did produce.
Jamie Harless was a senior in high school when I was a freshman and went out for football the first time. He was a bad bad bad man. At EHC, he was so good as a junior that EHC's center was named first team All Conference even though he was terrible. Harless made every other center look that bad. His double teams opened up space for Mike Kasnove, who had transferred from East Carolina, to be an All American pass rusher from the defensive end spot.
Pee Dee Peterson was a special safety. Both he and Harless had no business playing D3 ball. They were really good players. John Carmody, Mikey Hughes, Larry Arwood, Chris Ratcliffe, and of course Oliver Jordan were all great D3 football players.
I was a stiff, but they didn't throw me out. Good times.
Harless wins the fight. If I said otherwise, it is more likely that Harless would kill me versus Thor killing me.

Well considering @SonnyKofax10 has 39 followers he is probably referencing the article we all saw, and I don't put much weight behind this at all. Not to say it couldn't happen but a tweet by this joker doesn't get me scared at all.

no arguments here. His potential was undeniable. He could have been the biggest game changer VT had in a long time but I think his legacy is more about his potential and less about his production.

I hate that cut blocking stuff. GT wants him gone just don't want to pay out the $.
He would have changed this team DRAMATICALLY for the better. Even if he didn't block a lick. This team needed a #1 WR. Even when MD got rung up publicly they only kept him out a half because they needed him to stretch the field.
Then Stanford or Knowles would have had more opportunities as a #2, and teams would have had to cover alot more field against our #1, #2 WRs and that would have made our RBs better and even our QB runs more effective. Maybe even TE but I didn't watch to see who the opposing team put on Cline.... sometimes they'll zone up a TE or put a S on him. Most teams would have been reluctant to do that with Davis on the field.
MD was listed at 6'5 and pretty heavy with a 40" ish jump and some good 40 speed. Think he ended up 6 3 or 6 4 with an elevator, but clearly he fit the mold of a tall WR to scare the under 6 ft corners.
Caleb by is VT bio is 6'2" 205.... this is a bit of a tweener, and who knows maybe he's not 6 2. This is at least one of the risks you run with an athlete. Yes you've got height at 6 2, but you probably need separation at WR and/or at least really good route running. At RB 205 is still light so if you don't have explosive speed you are unlikely to stand out.
Hope the kid still believes in his ability to develop. Improving measureables (power / weight), route running, and/or putting on good weight might put him in a sweet spot. Unfortunately it would be best for his development if we knew what position that sweet spot is for him. Hope he crushes it developmentally spring and summer. Bump up some measureables some weight and hope someone puts you in a spot where you can succeed.
without going into the pros and cons of Davis' contribution at VT, I wouldn't classify him as a resounding success.

I didn't start reading TKP til around Bowl season last year, so I missed yall's videos. I've never completely defended him, but I've always found it a bit strange how a guy who was responsible for so many big plays took so much flak from the fans. It is conceivable that I've been giving him a bit too much benefit of the doubt.
