I worked my behind off during school, two majors in four years, and no one paid me a cent for it. In fact, I've got a ton of debt for it. And I'll never have the opportunity they have to make the sort of money you can make in professional athletics. Admittedly, most student athletes never will make that sort of money, but free tuition, tutors, and all the other perks would sure have been nice to have in college for myself.
So no, I don't feel bad at all.
Thanks for all of this Brian, this is great stuff. I haven't gotten to watch nearly enough Hokie basketball in recent years for varying reasons, but what I have seen gives me hope. I highly doubt we'll ever be a top-tier team in the ACC (especially with the additions of Pitt, Syracuse, ND and Louisville on the way), but there are pieces in place to be a solid team in the future. As you've said, this is a young team with a coach that's still learning on the job, so they will have nights where they look great and others where they look terrible.
As long as they continue to show effort, I'll be pleased with this team. The other thing I'll be looking for is to see how well JJ can retain his players from year to year. Transfers happen far too frequently in college basketball, and unless you're one of the select few teams who have elite talent (the one-and-done guys), team continuity and veteran players give you a chance to win. That is the type of program I feel that VT is capable of running and I hope JJ gets the chance to prove his worth.
Dont feel bad for indentured servants? Because thats what they are. I mean their scholly have to be renewed annually. So that "guaranteed" free education isnt really guaranteed.

I don't feel bad for them at all. Look at all the opportunities they receive as part of being an athlete. If they don't take advantage of them, why do I have to feel bad for them?
I feel bad for the so called student athlete. If a scholarship English major writes a book on the side and he gets it published, receives 100k, the university will hold him up as a shining light of literary success. Look at what our English dept can develop. Substitute english major with student athlete and your program is on probation for 5 years.
I have said all along that being a pro football player is no different than any other career path, yet it is the only one where we tell young men to have a backup in case it doesnt work. No one tells the aspiring astronaut "you know, its really hard to be an astronaut. Make sure you have a backup plan". However, if you made professional athletics a major, then guys have dreamed their whole lives of playing ball wouldnt have to worry about geology class. It could be a combo of some teaching classes, phys ed, communications, etc. Then if they suffer the rare careerending injury, they are prepared for coaching, mentoring other athletes, etc.
If the athlete wants to go full Facyson and play ball and study engineering, more power to them.
I might have to get this for my Niece. She loves ducks (and Hokies).

If that is the plan, I am not a fan. Two traffic circles/ roundabouts on the way to a football game?
I read the VDOT report that recommended against the installation of the roundabout on Prices Fork/North Main. Based on the traffic volume at that intersection, the installed roundabout should have been roughly three times the size of what was installed. It was installed that way at the Town's bequest to deliberately make traffic worse in town. They wanted more of a speed limiter than traffic facilitator.
That sounds awesome. I got to grow up watching Macho Harris play high school ball when I was in middle school and man that guy was fast. He was a returner, DB and RB. Basically my high school would just pitch him the ball to the outside on sweep plays on offense and he just had gears that other players could only dream of. A lot of long TD runs in that offense.
Certainly will be interesting to see what happens. I expect a lot of redshirts on the incoming class and some attrition from the existing RBs.

Exactly. You beat me to it. EVERY well constructed code of conduct, contract, or Constitution for that matter contains this type of language for the exact reason that you stated above. Nobody has a crystal ball, and you can't write yourself into a corner.
If this kid is charged with felony assault, I refuse to believe that FSU will let him anywhere near a football field. That goes way beyond fudging a term paper, or free shoes.
The funny part is Greenberg had a better record against #1 teams in the country than against numbers 2-25. Let's hope Johnson can emulate that part of his career and knock off a giant. I was astounded that we scored over 100 points against VMI. We might need to do it again to beat MSU.
I wonder what the staff plans to do with Mangus and Caleb...Mangus seems able to contribute at WR and Caleb maybe in a role similar to DJ Coles this year? I don't know, just taking a stab in the dark here, but it'll be a crowded backfield if all these guys stay at HB.
I agree...if FSU were to actually exercise this provision and let Winston play despite being charged with something as awful as rape (which - let's remember - he hasn't been yet), then I'd have some issue with it. Otherwise, it's nothing more than a policy that allows FSU's decision makers the flexibility to make an exception in a case where it would be appropriate.
It's really no different than traffic laws that allow a cop to let someone off the hook if they run a red light because they're rushing someone to a hospital who is bleeding to death (ie an "extraordinary circumstance") instead of the law just saying "every single person who runs this red light will be arrested, period". Okay maybe not the best example but you get the idea.
I would not be surprised at all if VT has the same policy, I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

I think the influx of RB recruits is an indictment of or running game over the past few years.

I enjoy watching tech basketball, especially with the young talent we have right now. Yes, their record may not end up being very good, but I look forward to watching the team and individuals grow every game. It helps that each game we are the underdog, and I can always hope that that night is going to an upset. Basketball is a crazy game sometimes.
I take jokes from roomates and friends about coming home after working 10 hours and watching us play teams like Western Carolina on ESPN3 on my tablet or the full replay of us playing WVU because I haven't seen the new Freshman play, but they don't understand. I love my school and always get excited when I get the chance to watch our teams. It doesn't need to be a showcase game of the week for me to care, I want to see every game. I know a bunch of you out there are probably the same way. Never know what could happen, and when it does, were you watching to witness it, live it? I will.

I have to say if I were a FLST official I probably wouldn't trust this Meggs fellow. I would have to see how much of the case I could understand. If I disagreed with Meggs, I'd go exceptional. If I thought the player was guilty I'd suspend. Its the middle ground between the two that is so hard to determine in this case. Reasonable for charges to be brought, unlikely to be convicted... what do you do?
