I realize a true top-of-the-line offense may be something VT has never achieved, and may never will. To give my opinion about what I would love to see out of our offense would be me literally repeating everything everyone above has said, I love it all. but when I think about what I was referring to in this post, I think about an offense that doesn't make mistakes, and can consistently score when given the opportunity. Something we did in the years past, and something we seem to have gotten away from.
Personally, I find how 247 does their predictions silly. It's just a competition among all of the contributors to have the highest rating and accuracy. So people who may not know anything about a recruit and may not have followed his recruitment at all will weigh in so they can get credit. So everyone should probably calm down a little about people changing their Crystal Ball predictions because in the end, the decision will come at 4 from Lee, not from what the Crystal Ball says. And even then, nothing is set in stone, or rather signed on paper, until February.
THIS. Yes he is Tesla and Neo.
I definitely see your point, as next man up is quite good in our secondary. Still, in my mind Kyle is an X-factor kind of player, especially when going against teams with the athleticism of the Miami offense, and that is why he gets the nod. Or, said another way, the Miami game is one where you truly need 2 Fullers. Fortunately, it looks like we will have them.
And, I hope Meyer has more in him than the drops he had last week. I have to believe he does given all the praise Logan gave him back in the summer.
I couldn't agree more. One of the comments on the video labeled him as a glitch in the matrix, which I think is still putting it lightly.
I agree, I think this year and next are going to be a mixed bag, but by 2015 we will get a chance to see what the "new model" offense is going to be. Hopefully the recruiting continues to get better and Bud keeps our defense humming, if so 2015 could be special! Has anyone got any leads on how to clone the Fullers?
agree- the line that Vick had was unreal. Which allowed for a solid run game and a solid passing game - #1 in scoring offense in 1999 and pretty high in 2000 I believe (#5?), but the other years we've struggle to be consistent in the top 50.
Me too. What the hell.
Yea, i had an edit once I found the stat, but for some reason the edit didn't take.
side note here:
Vick was a once in a generation (maybe more) type of athlete in all of sports. People like to make comparisons to him all the time, but the truth is few are like him.
I'm not talking about him as a QB or even a football player. Rather I personally feel that he might be one of the greatest athletes ever to walk the earth, period. He had such a combination of speed, elusiveness, quickness, instinct... always a hair faster and out of reach to all the other elite athletes around him. His "athletic quotient" is equivalent to Tesla's IQ.
It was fate that he was from Tidewater and came to VT.
Does Bud want to be the "man the follows the man"? That is tough in itself.
Woah, like 3 guys who predicted him to Mizzou earlier in the week have switched their prediction to Tech. Like our chances all of a sudden.
I nominate Anthony Midget for DB Coach.
Byrn is more critical right now.
In '99 we were #1 in scoring offense and #9 in total offense averaging 450 yds/game.

As wildturkey said, it isn't about having an offense that ranks #1 in every category (see a team like Baylor). It's about producing of top of the line TEAM. Yes, our defense is there and our offense is not, but we've actually had years in recent history where that was reversed. Look at a team like Texas A&M. Great offense, shoddy defense. Your offense can't win you every game as we saw with them against Auburn and your defense can't win you every game as we saw against Duke and BC. I just want the perfect combination of offense and defense to win us games. Would I like to see us blow every team out of the water with an offense that lights up the scoreboard and a defense that shuts the other team out? Absolutely! But it could be a very mediocre offense that does just enough to win us games and as long as we win, I'm happy.
General Grievous takes offense to having his name associated with "errors".

What is considered a top of the line offense? One that consistently scores more than its opponent? With a defense like ours, we wouldn't need to score more than 20-30 points a game to consistently be in a position to win. I don't want 59-0 games (although they would be nice), I just want an offense that can put enough points on the board to ensure a defense that allows 10 points and less than 200 total yards isn't wasted.
Our defense is giving up 17 points a game on average, with only two games allowing over 21 points. If our offense could consistently score three or four touchdowns a game, allow no turnovers, and chew up the clock, how would that change our historical win-loss column? I would not consider scoring 28 points a game top of the line, but it sure would have an impact on our team with a defense like ours...
Personally, I'm looking at about a 3-year window. This year and next are sort of transitional, i.e. teaching our existing guys (who the new coaches did not recruit) their system. Next year, we see how well the experience in the new system pays off and how well they can bring along the new players that are coming in that they may have helped recruit. The third year, to me, is the payoff year. At that point, you've got guys you've recruited and senior talent that you didn't recruit but that has been working with you for a couple years. I have my eye on 2015 as being a potentially special year, as long as recruiting continues to go well and the team buys into the new system.
To me, as long as the previous coaches didn't do anything explicitly damaging to the school's reputation (i.e. making new recruits hesitant to come here), then 3 years is enough. Given that our previous coaches didn't seem to harm our reputation, then I think we're in OK shape going forward.
Bud Foster definitely deserves a shot given how loyal and successful he's been. I don't think it should be Shane Beamer right away though it seems to be what Frank is pushing by naming Shane assistant head coach.
1 post, 3 separate occasions from something you said making me laugh my ass off. You sir have a gift
See my comment below, Frank Beamer Football, and Stanford's team as well...all starts with their offensive line play.
Before the Hokies get a top of the line offense, they'll have to get a top offensive line.
I'm with you. When I looked at the box score, the TOP for Stanford was what impressed me the most. I'd gladly see us score around 20-27 points per game (mediocre offense, by current "standards") and control the ball for twice as long as our opponent. If our D stays as stout as it is (or honestly, even if it drops off a bit) then we win most games easily.

I just hope the team comes out pissed off and focused and Logan has the game of his life! Go Hokies!!!
