Love him or hate him, he does have that iconic opening phrase and a reverberating voice.

I upvoted you because you make a great argument.

My problem isn't that there aren't many good ways to tell a story about bad people, or even good people doing bad things. And I'm not saying Breaking Bad isn't one of those. I wouldn't know, because I haven't had the time or inclination to include it in my limited rotation of entertainment options.

My problem is that so often anymore, people root on the bad guys doing bad things and don't give a second (or in many cases a first) thought to the deeper story being told. And in many, many cases, there really isn't a deeper story being told at all, rather the film-maker is creating a revenge-violence fantasy vehicle for the lowest common denominator. And sadly, in many cases, the story is crafted specifically to create a sense of moral equivalence between a person doing terribly evil things, and the rest of us squares who follow the rules.

This is really as far as I want to go here. This isn't a place for me to have deeper philosophical debate on the merits of Hollywood -- I have other places I do that. I like this place simply for VT football.

So, without knowing that adding "bitch" to something made it "breaking bad cool", I opined that it cheapened what are really great football plays.

That said, even knowing that it makes it "breaking bad cool", I still don't see how it does anything but cheapen really great football plays. I'd like to really think that our sack-masters aren't calling opposing QB's bitches either on the field or even off the field. I'd like to think that respect for our opponents is one of the first things our players learn, because anything less than that and we're trending back towards Marcus Vick territory.

I had no idea I was going to be taken to task or down-voted over a simple differing of opinion. I certainly didn't down-vote all the "blah blah blah, bitch" comments.

I'm not sure why I'd get down-voted for having an opinion, but hey, if that's how some of you roll, them's the breaks, and I'll take it into consideration on future up/down votes from my end.

Lots of ACC schools, even the non-football ones, need to step up their tailgating scenes. Every SEC school throws it down on game day. Some ACC schools (you know which ones) barely acknowledge football culture.

This is a really moot point. The whole media rights agreement ensures that no team is leaving until 2024 or something like that. The major 5 conferences are stable for now, until the media rights are over.

Happy birthday to Coach Beamer, the classiest guy in college football. As was stated above, Beamer is just a straight-up nice guy. I only ever ran into him once in all my time in Blacksburg, but a quick "hello" and small talk as we passed on the sidewalk was nice. Some people are too important to even make eye contact, but Beamer actually cares about everyone at Tech and has a friendly smile for everyone. Here's to many more, Frank!

Downvoted for all this?

Seriously?

That's pretty shallow.

They were the last one I took off if that makes it better.....just couldn't leave them on, (mental logic went something like: W&M lost to WVU but it was close, WVU lost to UMD 37-0, UMD beat LoLUVA by 1)

Wow, great point.
I guess its clear that they've had continually worse coaches since Welsh. I didn't realize London was actually BETTER than Groh from a Hokie standpoint; If London is this bad, I can't wait for the next coach that takes over!

I'd say it's highly likely that we turned down an offer to go to the SEC - by all accounts, our reasons to jump from the Big East to the ACC included things like reduced travel expenses and a desire to improve our athletic programs across the board. Sports like men's & women's soccer, wrestling & even basketball to an extent (where we've seen degrees of success in each since joining the conference) are mostly afterthoughts in SEC country. I'd also say that the ACC is a much better fit for us across the board not only in athletics, but academics as well. To my knowledge, the research opportunities that are available in the ACC far outweigh those presented as a member of the SEC. I'm not sure of the specifics, but I'm sure someone else can chime in on that part.

It's singular in this case anyway. Cause you said "one of my favorite." The more you know.

It's aboslutely more beneficial for the conference to have 3 teams in the top 10 than have 8 bowl-eligible teams vs 6 or 7.

No only that but I think your assessment of Miami is flawed. They were without a couple of their top playmakers including the best RB in the ACC, and they had injuries to a couple of safeties. The fact that they pulled out that win speaks volumes to their toughness, depth and resiliency.

Well, although they're a pretty daggone good school (let's be honest), no one's gonna rank UVA above those schools... or pretty much any public school to be honest. But once you get up into that upper echelon, prestige and perception tend to affect where you're ranked. The Ivies have much more of that going on.

(Sidenote: I just realized that if you replace "Ivies" in my last sentence with "SEC schools," the sentence before that could perfectly describe the football polls.)

Breaking Bad is a good drama but it's not that good.

People would care more about 6 bowl teams going 4-2 than the league having 10 bowl teams that go 4-6. It's all about winning. It doesn't matter if 10 teams are in bowls if you end up with a losing bowl record.

Thanks for the new Desktop Wallpaper!

Doesn't matter. Point is they got the help they needed to get in. Every year, several teams are dominant. Only 2 get in. Those that do generally need some breaks to go their way. Had Tennessee not been wildly incompetent (remember the 13 man "Volunteer" defense jokes?), the streak would have ended years ago. Had WVU not lost to a frankly terrible Pitt team in '07, the streak never would've made it to 2. I'm not suggesting the SEC champs aren't good - I'm just suggesting that if say the Big 12 dominant programs in that period, or Pac 10 (at the time) gotten those breaks instead of the SEC teams, we'd be singing a very different tune. There's a lot of chance in college football.

Nobody would notice if we have 7 or 8 bowl teams. I remember a few years ago when we had 10 bowl eligible teams and were still considered one of the worst conferences. The only way to gain respect is to have one or two teams consistently in the NCG picture.

Virginia Tech is better than Virginia Tech.

Div I - FBS Virginia Tech beat East Carolina 15 - 10
Div I - FBS East Carolina is better than Virginia Tech because East Carolina beat North Carolina 55 - 31
while Virginia Tech only beat North Carolina 27 - 17

Therefore, Virginia Tech is better than Virginia Tech in 2013
as shown in 2 rounds by a combined score of 87 - 68.
