The Hokies are playing epic defense. A.J. Hughes is looking like an excellent punter. Cody Journell is shaking off the pepper spray and hitting some sweet FG's.

This is Coach Beamer's comfort zone. He is perfectly fine with coaching the offense to not do anything stupid so as to give the defense poor field position when they get back on the field.

Sure...there are a lot of fans that are bemoaning the fact that the Hokies don't light up the scoreboard like the Johnny Footballs or the Oregon Ducks, but I'm cool with it. These are the Hokies. They're finally back. You Oregon fans can have your 75 point games. I'd rather watch the Hokies sack your qb 9 million times, and D-Block pick you off all day.

Defense Swag > offense swag - all day, erryday.

I wouldn't call it boring. I would call it frustrating. To see our defense go sack crazy like it did, was pretty great. I was hoping for an interception or forced fumble, but that's fine.

To see our offense work it's way down the field to only put up a field goal time and again was ridiculous. That's what made it 'boring'. I don't like thinking that the other team only has a big play or two to make it back into a shot at winning. It's annoying that when we get a short field we can't do anything because we can't just hammer it like we've been able to in the past.

Remember, too, that it's becoming a sport (at least at the college level) where if it's not points on points on points, it's "boring".

You dudes cannot be serious, the paper airplanes are great. VT has had halftime competitions of who could get the airplane to hit a target on the field. What you guys need to realize is that not all 65,000 people in the stadium are diehard Football fans. Lets just keep this board to football talk. Now how bout that D-line!

"edit" WOW, never seen so many Downvotes, especially for my opinion on Paper Airplanes. C'mon fellas, lets lighten up and just be happy we are bowl bound.

Well, he's right. The offense isn't really flashy and when the defense makes the other team punt every time it is boring football by today's standards. Offense and points get viewers, a defense that smothers the opponent and an offense that turns off after a 14 point lead does not and is boring to casual fans (80+% of all football fans) unless they're invested in the team.

Yea i agree that I love our defense, but a game that has a lot of punts is considered boring. Aren't we top 25 in how many times we have punted this season. Right now high scoring offenses is exciting. Like our 1999 team with Vick. We could have scored on any given play.

I just created an account to say just how much I agree with you. A sack is never ever boring. In fact a sack comes with bonus excitement if you have already sacked the quarterback. This bonus excitement increases with each successive sack.

I've read a lot about this being an ugly win for us.

I thought it was beautiful.

i mean, i love the team just as much as the rest of us around here, but uh, it was a pretty boring game.

And they said it in a very negative tone...made Lane look weak. Like they were downvoting the stadium.

We really don't have a whole lot of talent on offense right now, so as long as they put up some points and play mistake free we can win most of our remaining games. Really, these offensive coaching changes should have happened in 2008 at the very latest, but it is what it is.

I would love for this team to come up against a high powered offense, say Clemson or FSU, and stop them dead and then win boring with a score of 13 - 7.

There are several problems here...
The competition WAS at halftime. Not in the second quarter, or third quarter, or last 5 minutes of a close game. If it sanctioned by the school at half, chunk away. Otherwise, put them away and go to the drill field.

There are enough fans looking for tickets that would happily fill the seats and enjoy the game, without having to fill their ADD time by throwing stuff onto the field. If this is the only way that you will attend, and the manner in which you justify the action, then please pass your ticket along to someone that will stay the entire game, root for the Hokies on every Key Play, and pay attention to what's going on on the field without doing something that offends other Hokies in the stands.

And yes, we are serious. And don't call me Shirely.

"virginia tech thinks they can win!" lolololololol espn

angela tincher, straight outta eagle rock, va. eff yeah!

Haven't watched the game again, but it looked like Dadi's job was made as simple as possible. Either line up over the tight end and go get the guy with ball, or, wait to see if the tight end blocks and then go get the guy with the ball. When he did drop back, I think he was just playing straight man on the guy right in front of him. My guess is this is a one time deal against a team that runs a ton of 2 man routes, and if the tight end was a receiving threat you wouldn't have seen it. It looked very unfosterlike to see the whip chasing the tight end in motion across the field. Love the idea though, love the execution and not giving Dadi too much to think about. Foster has to love having the depth and weapons to tinker like this (and like Ky. Fuller against GT)

Perhaps now it is only for Defensive plays but when I was there we did for both.

According to VT website on traditions it for Offensive plays:
http://www.unirel.vt.edu/history/students_alumni/traditions.html

Key Play
In the early to mid-1980s, probably 1984, Hokie football fans began removing keys from their pockets and shaking them at the beginning of a third-down offensive play, indicating a key play. The tradition did not originate at Virginia Tech but has become a significant tradition at football games.

She's the greatest athlete VT has ever had, and it will take a borderline miracle for someone to surpass her. To put her career in perspective, a QB would have to be an All-American/Heisman level player for three straight seasons just to approach her accomplishments.
