That was the best coverage game Kyle has ever played, BY FAR. His man coverage was a major concern for me coming into this season.
Hallelujah! I hope we don't waste this on Western Carolina, though.
Well, it does make a secondary option tricky on play action, but if Knowles doesn't go downfield you can certainly run it, ESPECIALLY if other teams think they won't pass from it. Knowles just has to stay behind the line, and that can be accomplished by faking a screen action. Here is a rough example.
Your slot receiver takes a step back and goes flat to the sidelines behind the line of scrimmage. QB fakes the dive and takes one step to the option side, and then backs up to throw. The primary route is a stop (faking the option stalk block) and then going on a straight nine (go route) deep. He has checkdowns to the tight end, who fakes the trap block and goes to the flat. The dive man can run an out, but chances are he will get hit on the dive fake.
AJ was on point with the punting. #AJHughes4Heisman
Besides Trey Edmunds coming out party, I don't think any other aspect of our game deserves props. I mean, how many times have you heard an announcer say "I'm really impressed with that offensive line"?
So glad that Ke Fuller is #11. Still have my old #11 from the Adibi days. I had to put it away last year with Roberts crappy play and am happy to be able to pull it back out of the closet.
Only Sam Rogers can tackle Sam Rogers. His college stat line: 1 rush, 1 yard, 1 tackle...and because the statisticians know what's good for them: 1 TD...all on the same play.
Maddy gets the tackle, but Fuller and Gayle give up their body to create the stop. You expect it from Gayle, but it is very exciting to see a young player like Fuller giving up his body to make the system work.
This gets me so pumped up!
I love the irony of comparing FSU receiver's Danny Coale-ness to Danny Coale. Btw Danny Coale STILL hasn't seen an FSU DB...
I was listening to a few of the shows on Sirius's College Sports Nation while driving back from Atlanta yesterday. Most of the people on there complimented our defense and said what an amazing job Bud Foster did preparing for this game. The Alabama play-by-play announcer was on and spoke very highly of the Fullers. Nobody would give us props for any other aspect of the game though.
She looked just like him???....oh that poor girl.
I wish they would've been there last Saturday... it would've been a different game, boys and girls.
That defense though. I have seriously high hopes for this year. ACC championship.
The way these younger guys are playing, I don't see the defense missing a beat in 2014.
I could devote a chapter to each player of the defense for their effort. Dadi was no exception in his limited work.
The first Alabama drive of the 4th quarter was defintely "The Dadi Series." After Alabama got a first down, Dadi took over.
First, he squeezed down an inside zone from the back side (again, this isn't possible without a contain man taking Dadi's contain and bootleg responsibility.)

That, my friends, is arriving angry. Superfreshman Derrick Henry will be sore this week.
Then, he gets pancaked by Kouandijo, but in doing so creates a lane for Woody Baron to force an intentional grounding on AJ McCarron.

And, to show off his super power, the folks at Hokiesports.com credited Nicolas with a sack on the play!
Just having a bit of fun. Dadi played well. I just hate that my guy Woody Baron didn't get credit for the sack on the play. It would have given me a chance to hyperlink to the French on the Bench recruit analysis where I predicted that Baron would be a nice contributor for the Hokies. Oops! http://www.thekeyplay.com/content/2012/january/27/hokie-prospect-review-...
The Hokies picked up more votes in the AP poll after a loss than UVA did after a win. VT got 12, UVA got 2.
Also, alot about the game prep by the FSU coaches. Winston seemed well prepared for Pitt; knew where to throw and what to look for. (He also made some athletic plays.)
If you look at FSU's schedule, it's a bit of a joke/sets up well for a new QB.
They have an off week before Nevada, then Bethune-Cookman (WTF?), then BC and Maryland into another off week before finally getting tested again by Clemson Oct 19th.
So nice of the ACC to ease Winston into his college career.
Happy to hear Collins among some of the volunteers. Reemphasizes his willingness to be better.
We've struggled to sell out for a few years now, but it makes even more sense this year. Last year was our worst season in 20 years, people's budgets have remained tight, it's a good chunk of money going to Atlanta for our season opener against the #1 team, our overall home slate is pathetic, and $55 is expensive for a game against Western Carolina (and tons of tickets will be available for less off stubhub, in the parking lots, or anywhere else).
Sorry to hear you've been relegated to 1988, connectivity-wise. Look forward to wk 2. I think I was 4-2, but will await the results.
As always, great analysis.
My one concern with the Edmunds TD run: The formation has a WR covered up. Now this is on tape, defenses should be looking for the covered up receiver and and know a run play is coming. It will be interesting to see if Loeffler keeps using formations that limit your passing ability. Of course, VT did run that one pass with 9 men on the line (2 ineligible receivers)...
This scenario brings up the question. Do you think Loeffler will continue to use a formation that signifies 100% run now that the element of surprise is gone? Or do you think he will develop passing plays with covered up receivers, essentially playing 10 on 11?
It should also be noted that Bama did not tackle Sam Rogers on his run play, he obviously tackled himself because he didn't want anyone else to get hurt.
I know it's easy to say since the videos focus on J.R., but he straight owned Kouandjio and made him look like a practice dummy.
For those who missed the article about JR, you should definitely check it out - French posted the link a couple weeks back for those interested.
Glad to see JR put in an awesome performance and couldn't be happier to see a young man straighten out his life on & off the football field.
Dadi was so far in the backfield sometimes he could have taken a hand off. His explosion and quickness is absurd, but he needs to practice approach angles and keeping his head up when tackling.
