Going into the game, I think the majority of folks would have understood that the best hope for a Hokie victory was to keep the game low scoring and get a big play or two. If we don't blow three plays, we're looking at a 14-10 game, possibly. That would have had a significantly different story line in the media, I think. I'm sure we'd be hearing a lot more of "What's wrong with Alabama" headlines. Don't blow the three plays, AND complete just half of the passes we dropped, we could have possibly made it closer. Of course, I'm reminded of what my O-line coach always used to say, "Close counts in horseshoes and handgrenades".

So who coaches the rbs?

I know both of you guys are probably right, my post is just another sarcastic jab at our wide receiver play in the game.

My biggest fear is that D.J. Coles ends up being Dyrell Roberts Part II.

I had a Bama fan and alum from work come to me this morning and say how our defense was flat out amazing. He said their offense looked awful but it was because we beat them all over the field on that side of the ball and that our DL controlled them. He also mentioned its more amazing how well we played minus those big gaffs on returns considering how many guys we are down.

He was also going on about the last time someone had a rush TD against them in the first quarter and how rare that is. Also mentioned that Edmunds was damn fast.

Getting a little respect which is nice.

The uglier the better.

I've seen the hoos practice...their D-line is undersized, but on the plus side, they're slow. This ain't gonna be pretty, folks.

I think that's more like the first quarter.

Lil Beamer coached special teams at USCe...

Understand the special teams yardage, talking O v. D yardage, as most box scores generally report. Re: return yardage, of the 265, 166 were on two returns. If our special teams had kept these to average yardage (9 yd for punt, 20 on kickoff), their return yardage would have been 128, which is less than our yardage. Granted, we had more opportunities to return kickoffs, but they had more opportunities to return punts. Int yardage generally isn't reported as a stat as far as yardage gained, just as an interception.

This isn't great, right? From TSL's Tech Talk notes:

Tech started the game running triple option. Tech gave the illusion of running the triple option on the touchdown run, but it was a handoff all the way. That helped the play develop, and Edmunds was able to split it. There were a couple of read errors as far as keeping the ball or giving it up, and thats something theyll clean up.

I'm not sure I like the sound of faux-triple option. If you're going to succeed at the triple option, shouldn't you run it with all options open? Or is it normal for an option to be committed to one outcome from the start? I think of Nesbitt running the dive over and over again.

I'm not so sure that having him in the Bama game would've made a big difference, anyways. But for ACC play, I really like having another large, athletic tailback.

They wanted him at WR because of the depth at RB, with Edmunds, JC Coleman, Mangus, and Gregory but Gregory and Coleman got injured which immediately opened up a spot that needed to be filled. He was moved to WR because Loeffler is trying to get as many play makers on the field as possible but moved him to RB after the injuries hit. The minute he moved to RB he looked fluid and they really like him so I would expect to see Mangus move back to WR possibly and let Caleb be the third back. Either way it will be interesting to see what happens.

We owe Clemson a defeat before Tajh leaves. Probably Chad Morris, too.

Yup, I read somewhere that the last 5 times we started 0-1 we ended those seasons with 2 Orange Bowl apperances, 2 Sugar Bowl apperances, and a Peach Bowl victory over Tennessee.

...you realize Frank Beamer is the special teams coach, right? And what scheme do you think would make every single coverage member tackle better?

And which coach exactly would you remove in order to make room for a special teams coach?...

Hah... incomplete. I appreciate that pun.
