Cam Phillips is a beast. He is going to be a great receiver for VT in the near future.
Tough choice. Maybe we should make DJ wear #7 if he doesn't step up in the next game. As fans is it really fair to make us call out players who dog it with different numbers each year?
Maybe DC17 has a little brother coming up?
It's not that he redshirted, it's that he didn't redshirt because of injury.
According to VT complaince office: an athlete can be granted a sixth season if he/she is unable to participate (due to injury) for more than one season of the five seasons allowed by the NCAA.
IIRC Exum has never been hurt before, and wasn't during his redshirt. If he's not healthy enough to play in 2013, that will be just one season missed out of five due to injury and he wont be eligible for a sixth year. And...no I don't think its fair.
David Wang, could probably get one (and may have already) since he redshirted original to have shoulder surety. DJ was a similar situation.
Point is, we'll see Exum on the field this year regardless.
I agree that its not an excuse, just saying that its different from being able to catch in high school.
Without question our receivers have to step up. I will preface my next comment by saying that new/rusty receivers are almost doomed from the start when going up against the stud DB's of Alabama. But with that said, when you can't get separation against man coverage and your run timid routes through zone coverage, life becomes hella difficult for your QB.
Obviously unrelated to the current team, but Cameron Phillips is tearing it up on ESPN right now.
I was actually having that discussion during the game. Who would I rather have on the team--MD or DJC.
I sure do miss MD7 right now.
I was glad they did because it is ridiculous when kickers get that call when barely being touched or not touched at all...I liked this B1G crew
Having a redshirt doesn't prevent you from getting a medical redshirt a second time, the NCAA does take it into consideration. If Exum is showing any signs of difficulty getting back on the field or has a prolonged absence this season, he can petition the NCAA to receive another year of eligibility. His injury is one that really requires 12 months of recovery, i.e. he is done until January. Depending on his case, it could be irresponsible to ask him to come back just 9 months after such a serious injury.
If it's bad enough that the ref calls you out on it, you get flagged.
I wasn't as disappointed by DK. Yes, he had a ton of drops, but he was blocking and running routes. My real disappointment was with DJ. His give up plays and mental lapses were unforgivable. Especially for a senior "leader". Maybe if he laid out a backer or stretched out (or showed heart) on a play the youngins would respond. His performance was way too MD7 for me. There is nothing wrong with being hurt and scared. If so, take yourself out bthe game and give your spot to someone who give 110%.
I would love to hear that call. "Flopping, on the kicking team, number X." Of course, that begs the question - what terrible bad-white-men-dancing-on-the-field move would represent flopping?
I agree with this. If you can get a 5 or 15 yarder on running/roughing the kicker, kickers should be just as guilty of faking.
I think when you put the more experienced players in, you will see less bone-headed mistakes. Freshman want to prove themselves and they take some risks. During the bama game, Kyle did exactly what he was supposed to do, he ran to block, then dove under the punter. The punter did a great acting job on that play.
On that note, did anyone else laugh when the ref announced that the kicker went down on his own? I personally think that's worth a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct, but it was still awesome to hear the ref call him out like that.
Exum is not able to get a medical redshirt (he's already redshirted and his injury would've had to happen within a season and stretching more than one year...like DJ). This is his last year of illegibility.
No. I cannot. I know there was two on punt and I was practically screaming for them to stop making all these audibles, just line up and kick the damn ball. But, I know that whoever is responsible for calling out the adjustment needs to watch the clock.
I am encouraged, though, that Beamer is serious about putting the best players on special team. That is welcomed. What I am more worried, though, is boneheaded penalties like running into the kicker that extends drive, a la Boise State game (ugh).
At the beginning of the season yes he did get beat. Because he was adjusting to be a corner. But as the season wore on he got better and better. There is a reason he was all ACC. And multiple places call him one of the best corners in the country
Can you remember a season opener in the last 10 years when we haven't gotten two or more delay of game penalties?
Disagree on LT3 he looks like a Senior QB making the reads and throws...He was progressing though his reads...Felt the pressure in the pocket well and made great decisions...he can't catch the ball for the wide outs.
As some have hinted at, Exum didn't just have a minor injury here. RG3 JUST got cleared and Dr. Andrews has reservations about his playing in the season opener. The catch is that RG3 didn't completely tear any of his ligaments. He received ligament damage to the ACL, LCL, MCL as I recall but none were completely torn.
Anton Exum tore all three major ligaments and had a fracture in his knee, a much more serious and painful injury. Considering the defense played as great as they did against alabama (only 7 teams gave up less yardage than VT and they were playing unranked opponents while we played #1 alabama with a highly touted WR corps, great RB and a great game-managing QB) I think a medical redshirt is a good idea for Exum. He wants to be back within the month but even that is optimistic. I would rather him fully heal and recover to more than 100% then push to hard too soon and re-injure the knee. The defense is playing more than good enough.
Only other thing I could see is if he came back, let Jarrett go to whip. He is small but will fit there OK and they won't move Kyle because they want to showcase is CB skills to the NFL. But that is a big if...
meh idk, i remember him getting beaten a bunch last year, he just made up for it by being shutdown towards the end of the season so im still not convinced

I looked it up further, you're right. I guess the coaches will need to do some searching to say that they redshirted him for injury in his freshman year otherwise he will be playing. good call.
