Yeah, it was too good an idea to pass up... Props to you for it.

While I'm not sure about the family's current involvement in cockfighting, I'm absolutely astounded that deadspin didn't pick up on the fact that Johnny Football actually once starred on a FOX television show in the early 2000s called "Malcom in the Middle".

Tell me I'm not the only one who's thought this before?!

This is great! Glad my idea got put into full song!

I agree. I probably should have read your post before my post above. Essentially, until someone proves to me the risk of injury returning punts, I will always believe you always put your best returner back there.

FSU 2008ish? 3rd and 31 run!

I hear you, and I agree with you that this is alll based on "ifs". My "if analysis" is different than yours based on my perceived values of and probability of and outcomes.

Good stuff here Jhalf... neither of us are wrong, just valuing events differently and perceiving likelihood of those events differently.

Dez was hurt in that game, Hall didn't do anything great to shut him down. The Cowboys were playing their 3rd and 4th string receivers by the end of the game. I think Miles Austin had to come back in with an injury just to have 3 receivers.

Man, you nailed a lot of the good ones.

Before my time a bit, but 1995 Sugar Bowl against Texas was a huge game in terms of performance and relevance to the program.

1999 was my first year as a student, and I remember the absolute beatdown we put on Syracuse that year, after all the trash they talked about being able to handle Vick.

Texas A&M in the torrential downpour (was that 2002?).

Miami 2003 is probably the best overall game considering the rankings and their streak coming into the game. After the tense 1st quarter, once DeAngelo had that strip and TD they made it look easy (On a side note, I still remember a couple years before that when we blocked the Miami punt to get within 2, even after we had thrown 4(?) picks and that UM team was an absolute beast. Don't think I have ever heard Lane so loud)

FSU 2010 - Coale is still open

I especially like 11 unblocked Hokies

Versus Alabama 8-31-13

Logan Thomas finally took that next step, and it happened on the biggest stage of the early season. He was throwing frozen ropes all over the field and running over linebackers all game. Tre Edmunds also broke out, showing that he's the next big thing at RB for the Hokies. Edmunds had room to do his magic because new-hire Grimes had his offensive unit grinding, despite some pre-season concerns about the tip-of-the-spear. They would continue their dominance all season long.

The defense looked truly special that day. Kyle Fuller knocked two WR's out of the game on a couple of WR screens and little brother Kendall had that sick pick six! Seeing those two brothers play together... that was special. Oh don't forget how James Gayle mauled the new look Bama offensive line. Pretty sure that Bama QB is still having nightmares of 99. What was his name again? Eh, I can't remember, he never was the same after that game.

AND that was the game where #BEAMERBALL returned!!! Remember the two blocked punts and blocked field goal?

*Sigh* What a game. What a game.

It was interesting...it was a closed scrimmage...it could have been open, and it wouldn't have mattered....it was held at lambeth field (their first stadium) which is bounded by a hill and dorms, so nobody would have known it was going on. They build a multimillion dollar practice facility, and they hold a scrimmage in an ancient stadium?? The scrimmage wasn't advertised, so not many outside of the program knew about it. Felt kinda like the spring game. Except no flubbed punts. Of course, they didn't do any punts, but that's beside the point.

The go-to easy drink at the beginning of games in Evan Williams Black and Diet Dr. Pepper and usually stick with that the whole game. Been doing it for years. In addition shots of Makers are interspersed in there. After the game a nice glass of Four Roses, Bookers, Basil Hayden, Woodsford Reserve Double Oak (I find regular Woodsford too sweet) and a cigar to talk about the game and what was or what could have been.

If you have not had it the Woodsford Reserve Double Oak is excellent. Buffalo Trace, Basil Hayden's, and 1792 have never steered me wrong.

No no, mama giraffe would have started with a dissertation on why Miami is back, Dabo Sweeney is the second coming and Paul "I coach kids how to legally chop block" Johnson is not an asshole. And then would've had only 1 link to an Andy Bitter article with a short sentence such as: Virginia Tech is also practicing. Here are notes on ... Did someone say Miami?

I think French is absolutely correct about Jarrett's importance to the defense. Whip and Rover are the two most important play-making positions for this defense, and with Jarrett and RVD/Kendall manning those two positions Foster has a chance to field a dangerous unit.

But.

I think Jarrett should absolutely be returning punts against Alabama, and probably the rest of the year too. He is definitely the most dangerous punt returner on the team, anyone else back there returning kicks would be a noticeable drop-off. Punt returns are a huge opportunity for a team to change the game. Against Alabama, Tech isn't going to get very many chances to hit big plays and swing the momentum in their favor. Bama doesn't throw many interceptions. Long kick returns will be necessary to defeat them.

I also think that the risk to a punt returner is a little overestimated. Especially if Beamer sticks with his two returner plan, as Jarrett would be seeing even fewer return opportunities then he normally would. Think back on the past couple years of punt returns for Tech. How many returner actually suffered a moderate to severe injury during a punt? (Yes Roberts ended a season on a kick return injury, but kick off and punt returns are two totally different animals. Jarrett should not be returning kick offs)

I agree that having Jarrett return punts is a risk, but I wouldn't call it a huge risk. And I do think that the risk is justified, at least vs Alabama. A win vs Bama would be one of the biggest victories for the program over the past few years. It would help the program in so many ways (including recruiting). Tech needs to win the game vs Bama, and to do so it needs all hands on deck.

Fun fact, pretty sure I played with this kid at William and Mary football camp a few years back, has great athleticism but very raw, which I think has been evident in his early career

Sustained drives aren't our forte

I believe you meant, weren't our forte.

We have a new crew in town. Sustained drives, AJ getting hit so hard his mom has snot bubbles, and a Freshman CB making a key interception leading to a VT win will be their introduction to the country.

God I love my O&M glasses.
