Agreed. It should be celebrated that a good kid has an opportunity to go to college and make a profession out of the game we love. Good for the kid. Now, lets hope our kids can be just a bit better than him between the sidelines.
I don't think it really matters. I mean, all the guys committed to LOLUVA are gonna reopen their recruiting in 6 months after Mike London gets fired.
Easy tiger. Try to keep it positive. This is a teenager trying to decide where he wants to go to school. Lets try not to be too hard on him just because he didn't pick the school he wanted
For the 3-4 defense, worry much more about how your guards and center can double the nose and get to the inside linebackers than your tackles. Now, versus the zone blitz package, the tackles must be sharp
Derrick Nnadi in a few years to all the UVA fans who still want to brag about how they at least have culture:
From what I've seen and read, Nnadi is the more complete player.
When used properly (like now), this joke really doesn't get old. Enjoy your turkey leg.
"sitting on top of Fail Mountain."
I'll be using this with my Wahoo brother from now on.
Maybe this paves the way for Tim Settle, 5* Defensive Tackle from Virginia in nexts years cycle, to come to us. Who knows? Anything can happen. What I know is that Bud Foster continues to have an excellent defense with what he has. Is this a bummer? Yeah but it's gonna be ok
For what it's worth though, the coaches that we have replaced are not the primary recruiters for these big-time 2014 players - Hand, Brown, Holmes. We are missing out on defensive players that our coaching staff has been in contact with for multiple years, and I think that's what most frustrating. There's no excuse at all for the UVA to be running recruiting circles around VT.
That being said, I wouldn't trade a 5-star recruit for nine straight wins over UVA. Hell, I wouldn't trade nine 5-star recruits for it.
Having Frank Beamer more personally involved on the recruiting trail. If Mike London is pushing a more "young" (dude is 52) attitude along with Coach Slanted Visor, it doesn't do VT any favors if their future hall-of-fame head coach isn't making personal house calls and frequently putting himself out there early and often in the recruiting process. Sitting on top of a mountain in Blacksburg doesn't get these guys' attention.
Also, it's an issue when Bud Foster is rumored to be leaving or is openly interviewing for other jobs. I think that cost us several big-time LB recruits (Hughes, Anthony) in the recent past.
It's incredible to see how an average season of 7-6 and a complete lack of offensive play-makers has had such significant recruiting effects on VT. One "down" year and everyone is looking elsewhere. The irony of UVA fans is that they point to last year as a reason VT is down while sitting on top of Fail Mountain.
Just think about if David Wilson had stayed, or Tech had competed for the ACC and play in another BCS game. I think it'd be a different story. I'm just not going to get my hopes up for five-star players, or even high four-stars, because VT has proven time and time again that they cannot close.
Agreed, 17 year olds who prove they are dumber than a box of rocks by going to a dead-end program like UVA that calls any season above .500 successful deserve to suffer thru 4-5 years of frustration and losses to VT and other truly successful programs that they could have attended. Hope you enjoy losing to Duke young Mr. Brown, if recent history is any indication, you may have see it happen multiple times. Inconceivable.
While this has been disappointing, I'm not sure I would change anything. This is the first recruiting cycle under the new coaches so I want to give them the time they deserve. We've gotten rid of the "old/outdated" coaches and replaced them with younger ones who are on twitter and can better identify with these recruits. While LOLUVA is getting these recruits now, I think the recruiting future is bright with our new coaches.
But please, just give them time to prove it.
Hokie fans need to realize that even though Andrew Brown might have more potential than other recruits, there still remains a very real chance that a 2 or 3 star recruit could go on to have a much better career than him
Exactly. See Luther Maddy vs Kris Harley. Still have hopes for Harley to step up next year, but Maddy thus far has really performed at a top level since joining tech
I thought brown had some UVA alumni in his family or something? So Im not sure why everyone is surprised/shocked at his decision. It would have been like people being shocked Kendall Fuller came here. As for the whole UVA being pretty lame footballwise comments, well duh. But if that was the most important thing around to every recruit, then all the 5*s would go to 'Bama and we wouldn't win any recruiting battles with OSU, Mich, Bama or LSU etc etc.
In the end, I'm sad we didn't snatch him, but glad he at least stayed instate. I'd rather we lose out on him going to UVa (where our yearly beat down of UVa will be an annual reminder of his decision) instead of his leaving the state for Clemson or Bama.
Obviously it would be great to have Hand, Brown, and Nnadi all in the same class. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen. Instead of focusing on the decisions of 16 and 17 year old kids, Hokie fans need to realize that even though Andrew Brown might have more potential than other recruits, there still remains a very real chance that a 2 or 3 star recruit could go on to have a much better career than him. Injuries, academic issues, family issues, and problems with the "fit" of a school happen every year to players of every "star rating" around the country. While having a Brown commitment would have been exciting, it wouldn't change the outlook of our program. We're still going to be a top 20 program nationally, still going to play Alabama in August, still going to pack Lane Stadium six times a year, and god-willing still going to beat UVA on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Recruiting is flashy and sexy, but one or two decisions by a high school kid in June doesn't win or lose football games.
I agree. I just don't get it. Yes we had a pretty rough year, but UVA has had that for a while now. We have a better coaching staff, especially for all these defensive players. We fill up our stadium. We've punished UVA 9 years in a row. We've gone to 20 consecutive bowl games. We've played in some some recent BCS bowls. I just don't understand how three top prospects would pick UVA over us. I can't say much for the other talents wanting to go to OSU or Bama, but UVA, really? I would love to sit in on these recruiting visits and see the pitch London and company give to these players. I'm baffled.
Getting that indoor practice facility this past year would have made a huge impact I believe.
Let's close this thread down and move on. I can't read it anymore.
From Hokiesports.com - Virginia Tech AD J. Weaver reportedly considering hiring new recruiting coordinator for his department. According to Weaver "In order for our athletic teams to continue to compete and recruit at the highest level we need someone dedicated to bringing young men and women of character to our school. This person will be responsible for assisting recruiting efforts for all sports at Virginia Tech."
Current candidates are listed here:
Mark Sisson
Kimberly Crannis
Don Goodman
I think the main thing that isn't being talked about is that London was a cop. Clearly that makes the difference.

Mike Farrell Comments on the Hokies Recruiting Cycle:
""It isn't just in that Virginia Beach area, either. More teams are coming into the state and getting kids, and when they are losing Da'Shawn Hand -- a kid who has always maintained that Bud Foster was his favorite coach -- that is just tough to swallow."
The program has been in a similar boat as it is historically. The Hokies focus on developing talent more than recruiting elite athletes.
Farrell said, with that mindset, not much will change for the program but that may be the problem.
"The fans have to be sick of 10-2 or 9-3 and playing for an ACC title," Farrell said. "This is one of the best staffs for coaching players up, and that will continue. But if the talent baseline was higher, the outcomes could be more rewarding; and those ACC championship games could be for a chance to play for a national title."
London is 52. His youth has nothing to do with it.

The thing I hate is the fact that London is going to these kids homes and trying to be all hip and talking like he is on there level...thats all good but when you have staff Changes like they do , what does a kid think he is going to get coaching wise out of uva. There is no cohesiveness as a fan base and they never sell out of there stadium .I agree it will be hard to appeal to akid if your 66 years old compared to 40 but kids have got to do there research but until we win a big game expect more of these disappointments
