If Tech loses every game EXCEPT beating LOLUVA at the end of the season, its still OK in my book.
Kenny, London is 52 FYI, but he did wear camo one game and was a cop :-)
Agree. Uva has gotten "higher" ranked players from Virginia before and still not won. There are several years in the early 2000's where it looked like Va was far superior then Tech. But it was VT that won 10+ games and was ranked in the top 10. Before London, VT outrecruited Uva by a lot. Uva didn't get anyone in the top 10-20 for a few years. However, starting around 2006 it seems more top recruits have gone out of state. Those are the ones that worry me. Kudos for Brown at least staying in state. Uva has become competitive again with in-state recruits. Will it mean more wins for booveeay? I haven't seen any evidence of it yet. It seems too easy for top FBS recruits to get pulled away from this state. Does it matter? Can it change or does it need to change? Is it about something other than football?
He has a tattoo on his back that says "CHOSEN1". Yea, he's a cocky POS.
Kinda off the uniform topic, but is the wind direction during the coin toss fixed on the demo? On NCAA 13 I could never figure it out.
Andy, what's up with your Pitt primer?
-- Best team: With Dorsett running for 1,948 yards and winning the Heisman Trophy and Johnny Majors on the sideline, the Panthers ran off a perfect 12-0 record in 1876 to finish No. 1 in both the AP and coaches polls. Pitt opened the season with a 31-10 win at Notre Dame and closed it with a 27-3 Sugar Bowl victory against No. 2 Georgia. Amazingly, Dorsett was the only pick from the team in the first six rounds on the following spring's draft.
Earlier you said their first season was in 1890. What?
-- Players currently in NFL camps: 23 (most notably Arizona WR Fitzgerald, Tampa Bay CB Darrelle Revis, Philadelphia RB LaSean McCoy)
LeSean, I believe.
-- Little known fact: With eight players inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Pitt ranks third among all colleges, trailing only Southern California (11) and Notre Dame (10) and tied with Ohio State (10) and Michigan (10).
If they have 8, how are they tied with OSU and Michigan with 10?
Brown's 6.63 yards per carry average still ranks first in school history, followed by Brown at 5.79.
Who follows who? This makes it look like Davis has the 6.6 ypc average. I think.
Research? You are talking about 17 year old kids. I doubt most of these kids do a significant amount of research into schools. They go based off of family/coaching ties, recent memory, and how they think they will fit. I think we like to think that its a pretty simple decision of VT over UVA (which I maintain it is) but we also don't have our family/friends/coaches pushing us a certain direction. For all we know London is selling them on "be the one to turn this around" and Brown wants his shot at it. Honestly a kid that wants to "be the one" may not be the best fit for our beloved Hokies since what we preach is team.
Thanks for the caps
If I recall, last year was a banner year too. There were three top recruits in VA and none of them went instate. Next year is also looking promising with a couple top recruits from VA again. However, other programs are now full on sniffing in VA to snag some of these kids, so it may only get worse.
Yeah UVA has a couple of top kids, and there are many theories as to why (Beamer too old, London was a cop, etc). But I think that our coaches are starting to try and expand outside of VA which is good. The kids I mentioned earlier may not be the 5* of their states but they are heavily recruited by top programs and we should be happy with those victories and growth into those areas. You can't tell me elite teams like OSU, Michigan, USC, etc are winning with only kids in their states. So for us to be considered a national elite team, growth out of state is good.
As for Florida, I was going back more than 5 years. If my memory serves me, we have always pulled a couple great kids from that state going back a while.
I'm not in desperation mode, as French mentions, sometimes we go after kids we need or that fit our system. Why pick up a 4* in Moss when he won't work?
And let's be honest, we never had a chance on Brown. He had family and coaches pushing him there for a while, and as many have said, Nnadi is more of a Foster DT anyway.
We got time (only July after all, not like top recruits haven't changed their minds before) and if we put some wins up this season, that will help. We should be excited about these recruits who are out there ecstatic to be going to tech.
Thanks for the info/opinion.....always a fascinating read.
Question?: Tech actually has had some success in getting a few lineman into the NFL with lengthly careers.
How does Coach Grime's prototypical lineman and his looked for skill set as you describe translate into potential in the NFL? (Will he develop these kids into NFL candidates?)
East Windsor.....Central part of NJ near Princeton.....
DAGNABIT!
In their (Alabama's) defense, few teams manage to fail as hard as UVA.
Not very likely at all given their fan base...
I guess some of these players are willing to attempt to build a dynasty, fail, and receive little recognition, or succeed and receive even more recognition than going to an already well-established program. If that's the mindset, then props to them. That's a hell of a decision to make, especially at 16-17 years old. The pros (if successful) far outweigh the cons, but the odds don't seem particularly favorable.
ha I do the same
wouldn't pay much attention to that crystal ball. 75% of those guys will change it 10 minutes before he announces (when the cat's already out of the bag). we seem to be in much better shaped right now than uva with him .. MUCH BETTER. the optimism in me says that we get both nnadi and walker.
yeah .. i have no problem with lebron. he's the best player in the nba, has proved it, is an unselfish player (kobe could learn a lot from him in this regard, dwayne wade obviously finally has). considering the circumstances, he's not that cocky. even though it is a little staged, he always gives props to his team before himself and is harder on himself than anyone else.
they'll get theres .. we'll get ours .. but it's more than recruiting a few blue-chippers. 11 are on the field at a time and most of these kids (from both teams) have to develop for at least a few years before they can become solid contributors. it's more a matter of coaching and development than recruiting rankings, at least when trying to understand why we beat their asses for a decade straight. not even alabama can claim that with regards to auburn.
This was actually a facility built by Boar's Head Inn and Sports Club (owned by LOLUVA). It operates independently of wahooville, but they do hold many of their tennis tournaments there. No word yet on if there will be a hoosquash team.
Mike London was hired in 2010. Since then, UVA and VT has had similar success with the top recruits.
UVA Rankings according to Rivals with 5* and 4* in parathesis:
2011 - 25 (0,5)
2012 - 27 (0,4)
2013 - 28 (1,2)
2014 - 27 (2,1)
VT Rankings according to Rivals with 5* and 4* in parathesis:
2011 - 33 (0,4)
2012 - 22 (0,7)
2013 - 23 (1,3)
2014 - 30 (0,2)
Virtually the same. The only big difference is UVA is beating us in recruiting the elite talent in 2014 (3 top 100). It's a shame because 2014 is the highest ranking for the recruits in the state Virginia and VT is not reeling in the top-shelf talent. UVA is expected to get Kamara, another top 250. Hopefully, VT can land Nnadi and/or Walker (top 100 and 250). Otherwise, 2014 will be the year that VT gets hammered in top talent recruiting top talent by UVA.
Long overdue, but it's on its way. We talk about this topic all the time here.
It's called the house of mike London's false hope....he bags it up and sells it by the pound to recruits!!!!!
The MoJo, the Moxy, the bravado, the cajones, whatever you want to call it. VT needs to get this "it'll hurt if we lose" mentality in their recruiting. They have it on D, with the lunch pail theme, but it's severely lacking on the recruiting front.
The greatest recruiters have this (Saban, Meyer, Hoke, Spurier). It all starts with the head coach, standing up and saying we need the best players in the country to win. They CONVINCE the recruits that their school is the best for them, and that their going to be apart of something special. VT's recruiting motto is this: "We want guys that want to be here. So, 2-star, 3-star, doesn't matter, as long as we coach them up." (paraphrase, can't remember when Frank said this)
Shane, Grimes, Gray and Loeffler have all proved they recruit well. They just need to get that killer instinct from top-to-bottom.
