He's simply providing analysis and observations for discussion among the community. He's giving his thoughts and insight of the first scrimmage, helping the people not fortunate enough to go, to picture how everything looks. He didn't call out any players or anything like that. If no one is allowed to provide analysis and their thoughts, their would be no blogs, TKP wouldn't be here. The comments that don't help the discussion here are the type that you just posted.
Are any of us professionals? No, probably not, though there are plenty of people on this site with varied experiences and backgrounds. The common thread? We all love VT athletics, and I applaud Brian's analysis and effort to bring the fanbase some new insight and information. We've all been hungry for information for a long time, and I think this post is an exceptional insight into what's going on. Are any of us going to be perfect in such observations? No. Are we going to have all the answers? No, because if we did, we'd be coaching and VT would be undefeated due to our sheer excellence. The best we have is an eager community with some members that are willing to make an effort to inform everyone here with whatever they can. If you don't like it, that's your opinion, but you shouldn't denigrate others' efforts.
Good read .. It's an opinion so If u don't like it Charlie, don't read it .. How bout that?
Although there was effort...not sure of the results. What qualifications do you have to make these analysis?
I suggest leave all that in the hands of the new coaches. Everybody on here completely shredded the old coaches. Everyone got what they wanted...new coaches.
Now Brian is capable of an analyzing every player at every position from somewhere in the bleachers...... Too funny!!
I say just let the coaches do there job.....If someone on here can do better, they failed to prove it to CFB.
My first thought when I saw in the Tracker that the author of a post was 'Andy Bitter' was: 'What a great handle! Wish I had thought of that!'. Then, I come in, and see that it's actually him - even better. So glad to have you here, Andy! The only conceivable way TKP could get better.
53 second mark, i expect to see a bit of this.
nice work .. you spent a lot of time on this ... slack semester?
The offensive plays that stood out to me were the run by Edmunds (14), Homles' (20) first run where he ran through 2 tackles, the long catch by Stanford (5), and E.L. Smiling's (85) two broken tackles after the short completion.
When you watch the Edmunds run then the Holmes run, it is very apparent just how much more explosive Edmunds is. That video was more of a showcase of the OL getting blown up then anything else, though.
Reading this names me very optimistic. I'd love to see some of this kind of play calling in the fall. Lets start the season already!!
Crazy talk! Wow, welcome to TKP Andy. We (clearly) love your work around here. Thanks for all you do!!
JC doesn't do well inbetween the tackles, with the exception of the Duke game (the worst rushing Defense on the schedule). He's too slight, gets no push.
I've only been able to load three plays worth of video so far. Why does our site have to suck so much? But anyways, Edmunds first run (second play) was solid. Just wish they would zoom out a little bit so we could see the play develop.
On the option at 21:16, Holmes does a good job even though he looses about a yard, he gets about 4 yards after contact.
Looks like there's a following developing... http://theblacksheeponline.com/article/football-trailing
"a few writers were among the masses at Scott Stadium."
Are you sure "a few writers" weren't the entirety of the "masses at Scott Stadium"???
The highlights are now up: http://www.hokiesports.com/videos/
Tech also had a higher RPI than my Alma Mater, that actually made the tournament (or at least made it to a play in game)
Great analysis. I wish I could've been there myself, just glad I'll be there for the Spring Game.
1) I'd say the DBs are ahead of the WRs right now, which is what you'd expect. Once you get past Coles, there's really nobody with any experience at receiver. Three-quarters of the secondary are returning starters. I'd expect them to be further ahead.
2) I think most of the reason everybody stopped Auburn dead last year was that the Tigers weren't that good. I don't think Auburn ran too complicated an offense, just because the QB situation was so bad. (It was starting a true freshman by the end of the year.) I try not to judge him based on that one year. I think a lot of offensive coordinators would have struggled in that situation. Just look at how much Malzahn struggled the year before with no Cam Newton.
Late in the year he apparently struggled through some nagging injuries AND I think the Oline run blocking got worse, not better, as the season progressed. Either because the run scheme was soo terrible that opposing defenses knew what was coming or simply because the teams later in the schedule were of higher quality, I'm not sure.
Is Holmes a future first rounder? No. Is Edmunds? Quite possibly.
I'll have to see what Edmunds can do in a game environment though. He certainly appears to have a higher ceiling.
Andy,
Thanks for becoming a part of TKP. I think this is the best VT website on the net, and you (being the only VT beat writer I have followed in the past 2 years) becoming a part makes it that much better.
Thought I would ask you a few questions on the site.
Question 1: Our DL seems to be noticeably dominant up against our OL. What is your take on the competition level between DBs and WRs?
Question 2: In Huntsville Alabama, most Auburn fans don’t miss Loeffler at all (I like him so far). There complaint is that as soon as the Offense came to the line of scrimmage everyone could tell what play was going to come, and it was usually stopped dead (for the record, VT fans are used to this). Do you think his offense will be predictable this year?
I am not selling my stock on Holmes, but I'm not buying more right now either. From what I've seen of him so far this spring, he's running hard. I'm always quick to cite the same plays against Cincy as you whenever people knock him, but that second half was the beginning and end of his highlight film. Late in the year he really struggled to push a pile and gain yards through contact. We saw Edmunds gain tough yards last August behind the 2nd and 3rd team lines against the first team defense.
I'm not totally sold on Coleman either, but give his speed and big play ability he will have a place in the offense. He's small, but he doesn't run away from contact, but he doesn't run through it either.
Also, the tailback competition is only going to get more intense when/if Drew Harris is in town.
Not much else to hang your hat on...

Easy, he's just voicing his observations, most of which seem perfectly valid. People were quick to shred the old coaches because, quite frankly, they didn't do a great job. I can't tell you how excited I am to see Loeffler get on a guy (Asante I think) because he overran his motion by a step or Grimes call out a player for not getting his first step right off the snap of the ball. These new coaches have some fire, are focused on details and fundamentals, and demand excellence, which has only been seen on one side of the ball here at Tech for a while. Back to my point, Brian is letting the coaches do their job, he's just commenting on how good of a job he thinks they're doing and offering some thoughts on what he's seen from the bleachers (which, let's face it, is the exact same spot from where everyone else not on the roster watches the games). I say, good post, Brian.
