I laugh at that line every time I seen that movie. I have been on the Fridge bandwagon since last season. He would be a great addition. not long term but solid.
I would laugh if Clemson choked on the chicken bone and lost to Duke
Kyshoen Jarrett is playing great this year. We need more of him. I wish Kyle Fuller, and Bonnar was playing as sharp as he is.
It is so crazy to see the death of BeamerBall unfolding before us. It used to be so exciting to watch special teams because you always felt like there was a shot to see something special or game changing. Was it me or did that punt block look like it was happening in slow motion? I honestly don't know of any teams that couldn't have blocked that. It was so slow developing.
I feel like we don't have the right matchups or something...we should be able to block some or at least attempt to.
..."Its the Execution, Stupid" post game comments, it's with special teams.
What I saw:
- Yes, we have a punter who has dropped three balls. We also switched snappers this year for the first time in four years and are using a punter who had never played football 18 months ago. So, yeah, there is an issue there.
- Duke Johnson broke a KO return. That's like saying Mike Tyson is good with pinatas. Duh.
- A really good FG kicker missed a 47-yd FG.
- PAT's get missed a few times a year, it's rarely convenient. I would say that most missed PAT's come after quick scores, like a 75 yd run by your QB. If anything is to be learned from last night, it may be for Journell to be reminded to be ready for a PAT always. And, if you're not quite ready...just take a delay of game penalty. (every now and again, somebody will take a TO because some blocker isn't on the field for a PAT after a quick score. That drives me nuts, just take the 5 yard penalty)
overall, the special teams have been much better this year than I expected. AJH can punt. Journell is very good. Good punt returner, fairly good KO return tandem. (I do not understand why Michael Holmes is back for punts...or really why he is ever on the field. But, otherwise)
I am hoping that VT could pull upsets and win out. Then Clemson and GT beats Duke (which could happen) even though GT has played horrible, their running game is solid and Duke's run defense is bad. These are both possible things.
Then comes Miami. I hate UVA but if London could inspired his guys for one game to take out the Miami team as a "statement game" and then if Duke beats them. VT would line up as the Coastal representative.
Just hoping I don't have to sell my tickets to the ACCCG. I really am not that interested to see Miami and someone else in CLT.
It appears to me most of the players are scared to make a mistake which results in tentative play and once a mistake happens they can't react/overcome it. I was taught early on in football if your going to make a mistake do it going 100 mph. The only person I see playing 100 mph all the time is JC. Football is supposed to be fun at the end of the day it is a game. Someone tell me who watched that game last night when they game was still in reach if anyone that played for the Hokies looked like the were having fun I sure did not see anyone having fun out there.
We have more talent than we have shown, and we didn't have the early season run to support a late season swoon.
But, sometimes, teams just don't come together. It seems to be a confluence of issues: effort, preparation & execution from players, depth issues, schemes needing updates, poor match of schemes to personnel, low confidence in schemes and some teams just flat out beating us.
In 2003, it seemed like we needed to get out of the Big East immediately, we had been solved by some teams that we had significant advantages over (BC, WVU) and other old foes (Miami, Pitt) weren't making life any easier. We went away and rebuilt ourselves the next year after falling out of relevancy.
Maybe we can do that next year, maybe we can't. The switch the the ACC brought some advantage in that teams had to figure us out all over again. Maybe the switch next year to fewer Atlantic teams will help, maybe a favorable (read: no FSU/Clem) schedule will let us regroup. Maybe a senior QB will become the leader we so desperately need.
Maybe.
Unfortunately, each one of those teams you mentioned has something in common with eachother that Virginia Tech doesn't have.
...Coaching changes...
This article should be re-named "Punch to the Gut Reactions"
Why JC hasn't had more carries, I'll never know.
The 2nd tiebreaker is the record of the tied teams within the division (so records against Coastal teams).
In that scenario, both Tech & Miami would have 2 divisional losses (UNC & Miami and UNC & Duke, respectively), but Duke would only have 1 divisional loss (VT).
I think they have also hurt out leadership. BRUUCCEEE was one of the biggest leaders on the D last year before getting hurt, but this year, because he isnt always the best player on the field, he feels reserved about stepping up. Kyle Fuller has the same issue. He's been hurt and getting beat so he doesnt feel capable of stepping up. Antone was struggling at the beginning of the year with a new position and hurting us more than he was helping. May have kept him away. Antoine Hopkins would have been another one, but recovering from an ACL injury isnt easy. Dyrell may also fit into this mold but he's never really been a leader. Marcus Davis is the guy that should be stepping up, but he hasnt. Martin Scales could step up, but he doesnt get enough carries to get people on his bandwagon. It all adds up to a team with no true leaders...
Friday Night Lights (the movie) coin toss.
Not go bowling at all. I doubt that they'll be able to reach .500 at this point anyway, so it will most likely be a moot discussion.
I think missing a bowl would provide better motivation to the team than going to a crap bowl. It seems some complacency has set in among the staff and players and a year of sitting at home watching all the other teams go to bowls will be motivation enough. It will be a hard pill to swallow, but if it means that the staff comes back motivated, it will be worth it.
As far as administrative changes, the only changes I expect to see are positional changes. I will be very shocked if any staff changes occur in the off season. Let me be clear, I don't expect Beamer to get any pressure to do anything from the higher ups, and without that pressure he won't make any changes. It will take multiple lackluster seasons for any changes to happen. We can only hope for a change of mindset from the staff.
Beamer's probably gonna retire soon, I honestly think that's when the downhill fall starts. Once he leaves questions will rise about Foster and Shane, I don't think both will stay.
VT needs Apollo Creed to come take us back to the old school gym! VT will get back to where it was sooner or later, hopefully sooner, we will see.
Most people look at the issues for this year being execution related. To some extent I would agree. There are some throws LT should be completing and some he should have never considered throwing. I think he over analyzes because he still doesn't trust his surrounding cast 100%.
But I think that it comes back to leadership. I know that showed LT on the sideline trying to get the offense together for a final drive but with the youth on offense I would like to see more from the coaches in this department. I think the young guys don't care for some of the coaches (Stiney/O'Cain) and they aren't trying because they don't respect what is going on around them.
yup I love Jack too!
I also forgot to mention that Jarrett had a pretty good punt return last night when our backs were against the wall. You could tell he was trying to do a pitt repeat.
yup, Sophomore!
btw, his name is crazy. I feel the need to google it every time to make sure I'm spelling it right haha.
I don't have season tickets so I can't drop them. I was just piggybacking off of what a season ticket holder said. When given the chance to get season tickets you can bet your a** I'm going to get them. But if changes aren't made, I'm going to go to one game, maybe two instead of the three/four I usually go to. I'm not wealthy and every game I go to sets me back a couple hundred dollars. I work hard for my money and I don't make a lot of it, so I have a hard time continuing to give it away when I don't see the results that Hokie Nation deserves. That's my choice. It has nothing to do with me not supporting my team.
There have been comments like "I turned the tv off down 8 in the fourth quarter." That's not supporting your team. People saying they hope we lose out for the rest of the season. That's not supporting your team. People leaving games early. That's not supporting your team. Fed Ex being pretty empty when most of our alma mater lives within an hour of the stadium. That's not supporting your team.
I will always support the Hokies. I wear my orange and maroon every day, win or lose. I proudly brag about the Hokies, win or lose. The people that know me personally know that they don't know a bigger Hokies fan. Regardless, just don't tell me my true colors aren't orange and maroon because of a comment you read. That's very offensive and even more so coming from a fellow Hokie. I won't say anything more about it though. This site should be a friendly one and I don't want this exchange to be unfriendly. I've said what I had to say. You're entitled to your opinion so I will let you have it. Go Hokies, FOREVER.
Like everyone i would have picked VT.

Also hardly ever sees the field. Even after a big time performance just weeks before.

Couple observations -
As French pointed out in the Clemson tape, against spread formations Michael Cole is literally playing center field and Jarrett and Bonner are playing almost like outside linebackers in a 4-4. It's a very interesting approach - Michael Cole literally had zero tackles (I think), but it puts him in a position where he can't make too many mistakes. It has definitely worked. Just another example of Bud doing something extremely innovative in his scheme to produce a better product on the field - can we say the same for the offense?
Has any other team ever tried to hire Bryan Stinespring? Has any other team ever visited Bryan Stinespring? Offensive coaching was, is, and will continue to be a problem until something changes.
I thought the end of the first half was a major cluster F. Frank reminded me of a grandpa who forgot the rules and / or wasn't aware enough to look up at the clock. I hate to see him look like that.
As for Logan, I've seen SIGNIFICANTLY more dropped passes from this team then I've seen from any football team I've ever followed. Does that impact his accuracy? Does he take a little something off his throws or alter his trajectory because he's seen one too many passes bounce off hands, facemasks, and chests? In addition, I've seen repeated and disgusting lack of effort from our WRs on routes. Does this impact Logan's trust in the guys he's throwing to?
Something doesn't look and feel right about this team. There's something toxic out there. Maybe it's the fact that our best players (JC Coleman, Knowles, C Fuller, etc) are sitting on the bench while others ahead of them on the depth chart continue to disappoint. Maybe we have a few toxic personalities out there. Marcus Davis, based on this playing style, and what he says in interviews, seems like a "me" person if you ask me. However, he's been absolute garbage. He complains on the field about pass interference flags, literally, 75% of the time. What does he complain about in the locker room?
