did Fuller completely overrun the play to his right? If he had filled up the middle instead of looping to the outside (he was expecting Ellington to bounce it outside I'd guess) he would've taken away Ellington's cutback behind Hopkins at the LOS.

I certainly agree that our defense struggles with against good opponents with gap-fit adjustments to motion and pulling blockers. Against lesser competition we win 1v1 battles too often for bad angles and an extra blocker to be too much of an issue.

In this case the right side of the defense had things bottled up yet Fuller sped across the formation as if the play was breaking to the edge. From the end zone camera its easy to see that Edwards and Collins had the defense's right flank sealed off. Edwards came clean to that gap and Collins was probably supposed to have inside leverage but got met by the pulling guard who kicked him out - right to where Edwards filled. So between the them the outside was taken away, and Ellington cuts back up the middle.

If the H-back had blocked Edwards, Ellington might have had a clear path to continue to the outside, but Tyler was riding his blocker to the outside (probably a failure on his part to maintain a gap in the middle) and the way the blocks were developing, the better option was up the middle, and Fuller should've recognized that his teammates had the outside covered and stayed at home in the middle.

EJ Wilson played QB for Brunswick until is Sr year, which was clearly not his position. Butch Davis stole him from VT, added weight, slid him to DE, and put him in the NFL. Casey Walker is also playing D-1 basketball and doing well.

It was a bit of an assumption on my part that you were from Greensville... I don't recall escorts for other teams. I enjoyed playing Powhatan in football and baseball, though y'all usually won. We played one varsity football game at Powhatan in BITTER cold that I'll never forget (2001, maybe?). I was very sad to learn that PHS and Matoaca were leaving the Southside District.

Quote from a friend of mine who coaches high school offensive and defensive lines: "These stunts and slants have guys thinking about gap control. Adding the misdirection has guys thinking instead of playing football. I don't know if VT can do anything specific to stop it....other than whip the guy in front of them!"

After everything I have watched, the easiest solution is to be so good on offense that they get a lead, negating the run threat. Of course, that is VERY easy for me to say from behind this screen.

Probably so. I went to Powhatan. I would love to see the GCHS vs. CSHS basketball game. I can only imagine how hype everyone gets for that. Very talented basketball teams!

Yep,that's his name. It had slipped my mind. I knew he was a big time player though. 6 straight championship games is crazy, but not surprising considering how much talent there is in the area paired with a coach that knows his stuff.

DWalt, I must have played you in football and basketball, as I'm a c/o '05 Brunswick Bulldog. We also had police escorts in/out of Emporia... it's not like either town is dangerous, it's the GCHS/BSHS rivalry itself.

The former NBA player/new coach is Bryant Stith. He's the all-time leading scorer for UVA, and played 10 years in the NBA, mostly as the Nuggets' starting SG. Brunswick has been to 6 straight State Championship games in basketball (all six of Stith's seasons coaching), winning the last two.

he got a few first downs with his legs!

or... Stineyball

The Hokie-poky (look up the definition of poky)

We should come up with a name for what we want to be rather than what we are known for. Truck and Chuck is the best so far.

The Schiz-O
The MPD (Multiple Personalities Disorder) also rhymes with LPD (lunchpail D)
The "Chris Peterson, Gene Chizik, Rich Rodriguez and anyone else who has a better offensive ideas than we do" Offense
The MV7, Randall, MV-II, T-mobile and LT3 Broken Play and Scramble Offense

how he includes down field blocking in his highlights....a very necessary skill for VT WR's....not sure how his lagging back on kickoffs plays, but he shows good speed to catch up from the off side.....I would defer on how crisp his routs are to those of us who are more knowledgeable, but I temper any criticism with the knowledge that this is sophomore film...but it looks like a very good get.

As for NC State vs Clemson, I am watching the highlights. It just looks like the NC State front destroyed Clemson rushing 4 and playing nickle. Plus, Clemson turned the ball over a bunch and NC State did whatever they wanted.

The Hokies inability to move the ball against that defense was just as big a disappointment.

I have told anyone who would listen that I didn't like having Collins moved inside, and that if they did move him inside, he needed to get upfield and disrupt the full back/QB mesh point. Instead, Collins played read and react football and was driven off the ball often, which is to be expected when he is doubled and cut block all night. While the Hokies were able to win, Collins was a shell of himself until the bowl game after Georgia Tech, and I am convinced that was because he was so beat up.

I have not watched any tape of Miami vs Georgia Tech, so I am not sure if they make any specific adjustments from their normal scheme, but they certainly have the Yellow Jackets pegged. It is even more stunning given how horridly Miami's D was against the Hokies. I would go so far as to say Miami was the worst defense the Hokies played all year.

I played in this conference (Football, Basketball, Baseball) 2003-2006. Brunswick is definitely a basketball school and not exactly solid in football program. I remember at Greensville for Basketball games we had police escorts from the charter bus to the locker rooms and even had one on each end of the bench. Other than the safety concerns, the community packed the house for basketball games. Unreal atmosphere at Greensville with the school band playing right behind the visitors bench. Brunswick had a guy that used to play Pro basketball come take their basketball team over and they have a sick gym now.

Anyways, a lot of the schools in the Southside district have some talented guys in all sports, but get overlooked because it is AA. I am surprised more don't end up going D1.

Hope the best for both of these two 2014 commits. Look forward to following their development. I can't imagine being that talented as a sophomore.

I saw Xavier Burke play last season when Brunswick visited Greensville for both teams' finales. He took over at QB for a young and rebuilding team midseason after their freshman QB got hurt. Also played DE on defense, and from what I understand, started the season playing TE on offense. He was the type of QB who was the largest player on the field. Best play was to keep it on the spread option and make Greensville gang tackle (just one person wasn't going to tackle the kid). He also made some plays on defense, from what I recall. Brunswick is a basketball school (won two straight state titles), but the football program is pretty solid (aside from the down year last year). Also a good track and field program. The school is loaded with athletes, several playing in college right now (Javonte Green for Radford hoops is a stud who flew under the radar), several more committed in future classes. If BJ Stith pursued football instead of basketball, you'd probably know a little more about Burke, because Stith would have been a D1 QB recruit and a passer. I imagine VT plans to play Burke elsewhere other than QB, but you never know with the way those guys develop talent. Anyway, here's a link to my story from the game I saw Burke play.

P.s. I heard Tech likes an O-lineman out of Park View South Hill too. I know Stinespring made the rounds in Southside Virginia last season. Said Tech was trying to get back to the days when they visited every school in Virginia and talked to every coach. Not sure that had anything to do with Burke, though. From what I can tell, they just discovered him at a one-day camp.

Actually Clemson's D is not going to be all that different than what it was last year except that Venable is simplifying it without all the checks and stuff. It will be a 4-3. http://www.orangeandwhite.com/news/2012/jan/21/swinney-hired-venables-br.... One thing that the Hokies will have to do is be able to beat their press coverage on our receivers like what happened when D.J. Coles scored on that long TD. Hopefully Logan will have improved his accuracy to be able to make them pay for it.

Obviously many of the highlights show him at WR where, as mentioned, he could be #STRAIGHTBURNER 2. However, he says he's looking to play corner. Just looking at even that first snipit of him covering it's easy to see how well he angles toward the receiver as well as keeping the eye on the ball versus where the receiver is headed. Awesome.
