and the crash dummy stripe on the helmet is, um, interesting...
A first year starter normally doesn't have a stellar year. But there are exceptions. Greg McElroy had a decent year for Alabama in his first year as starter.
No quarterback is perfect so I hope we all have patience. There will be bumps in the road.
I am glad he has been less than perfect in practice. It will temper our expectations and hopefully take some of the pressure off him. We don't need him to be great, just sound.
Freaking Kidding me?! Turtle Print?
Those are terrible!!!!! I loved it back in the day when Len Bias would wear the all Yellows. But this, this is just laughable. I thought the XFL and USFL were defunct. I would take Oregon Unis over these any day of the week.
I agree with taking that hideous logo off the helmet, but with 27,000 students on campus, tons of alumnus and a tie to a company that has come out of nowhere to dominate sports wear in recent years (including outfitting the defending National Champions...) you cannot come up with a logo for your helmet???
Ugh, time for Turtle Soup.
I have this too! My mom gave it to me several years ago! I keep it on my counter and put change in it daily!

I still want hokietriana's vintage stool in my house.
Welcome to the community Jersey!
just like hating.
colorado, oregon, washington & especially cali .... russian river & bear republic.
love asheville beer scene.
QB play is always critical. I don't want to put too much on his shoulders for a first year starter. If he efficiently manages the game with few turnovers I will be happy. Not expecting a Heisman year, just a decent year. I don't expect him to be a hero.
I hope I am pleasantly surprised but expect there will be some bumps in the road.
I think the D will be better and hope they are great again. I temper my expectations knowing more can go wrong than go right.
Right across the river is Kentucky and the bourbon trail! I was there for a week earlier this month.
That is one heck of a trip. Lots of good food and drinks. Asheville, NC has apparently become some sort of mecca for microbrews.
They are finally getting some beer down here. I have been wanting to get down to Boca Raton for the Funky Buddha Lounge. Jacksonville now has Green Room Brewing, Intuition Ale, Bold City, Brewers Pizza, Mile Marker in St Augustine along with A1A Ale Works, and Kariboo in Fernandina Beach.
Didnt play any Colorado teams. The microbrews out there are stellar.
was Miami was another 6 hour drive, but really had it matched up to top 5 teams, my alternate universe self would have made it.
florida is a few yrs behind most states in craft beer. 2 yrs ago it was awful, now i can see progress.
Michigan-Ohio State may be one of the greatest games, the best Rivalry is Auburn-Alabama. I'm not sure I would want to be in the stands for that love-fest of a game, but it is on a whole 'nother level.
I missed the LSU game in the bayou, but that to me is the Mecca of College Football, as long as you show up by Thursday afternoon.
Stameys, it is awesome. My changes would be away from Bold City Dukes to Intuition Ale I10 IPA, it is the best beer in Jacksonville right now (there are 3 new breweries coming out so that might change soon). Also I would probably have Cigar City over Swamp Head, even though it isn't local to Gainsville it is a hell of a lot better.
I know that the Florida State vs. Oklahoma game is unfortunately on the same night but think the Miami vs. Ohio State game could be interesting. I feel like the us against the world angst will lead to a spirited game from both sides depending on how many guys are suspended from Miami. I'll be enjoy watching both games from the comfort of the bar and rooting for the ACC to make some positive headlines.
Non ACC wise I really do want to go to a Michigan vs. Ohio State game someday. I've been to the big house and I have a cousin that bleeds blue. I'd love to see the animosity and outright hatred especially with the hope that Michigan has this year with Tressel gone.
Please excuse me while I laugh hysterically, then go vomit... I think they might win a few games because their opponents just can't stand to look at them.
First off ...
6) Don't be an asshole. The Hokies are going to lose more than you'd like them to.
Read this. And read it again. And read it a third time.
In the nearly 120 years of Virginia Tech football, the Hokies have gone undefeated in the regular season just 3 times: 1918 (7-0), 1954 (8-0-1), and 1999 (11-0). So, let's face it, the odds are that we're going to drop a couple games.
Every Saturday afternoon I'm expecting us to win. But if we don't, I know it's unreasonable to expect an undefeated season. And, as mentioned, a loss is no excuse to be a raging douche.
5) Know when to be loud. ... When it's fourth-down, yell, raise your arms over your head, palms out, touch your index fingers, and chant "block that kick" all while moving your arms down to your waste and back up again.
On the surface, this appears to be solid advice. However, this is just an example of how Lane Stadium has lost some of its edge. Back in my day ('97-'03), I cannot recall chanting "block that kick" on 4th down. Nor can I recall waiving my arms down to my waist and back up again.
This what I remember about 4th downs when the other team was punting:
They were louder than 3rd down.
If 3rd down went to 10, then 4th down ... in the words of the great Nigel Tufnel ... went to 11.
Forget the arm waiving and forget the chanting. When the opponents are kicking on 4th down, yell your ass off.
4) You also need to support the second team, as we all know that they most likely will be starting in next couple of years. Rain/Cold is also not the reason to leave game early.
This article should be in rare breed section. Just sayin.
You'll be there to witness a game that warrants rushing the field! I would never do it now as an alumni but destroying Clemson in 2006 on Thursday night when Clemson was ranked 10th was awesome. Branden Ore rushed for over 200 yds. and I was one of the first people on the field. I remember jumping up and down with Chris Ellis while he was wearing a Tech colored Dr. Suess hat. I'll never forget being on Worsham Field after that game.
I was probably 7 or 8 years old. it was in 2001 and my dad took me to the Western Michigan game. i remember us destroying them, but what i remember most was the "GET WELL, LEE SUGGS" chant, instead of "LETS GO, HOKIES", because Lee Suggs was injured. it was an awesome experience for my first game ever.
Fine then, Wild Turkey 101, just because it is in the "Hokie D" shot at Sharkey's.
has two nicknames in "Gobble, Gobble" and "The Dirty Bird". GAME OVER.
Ah, the first paragraph makes me remember my first VT game: '98 vs. ECU. I sat in the next to last row in the East Stands. I didn't drink before, during or after. And, thanks to my family that half are UNC fans, I didn't know how to cheer above a golf clap (other half of the family is from Dook, and I do remember them getting loud during the Spurrier days). I don't think I realized/learned what going to a VT game was all about until WVU that year. The week after that was at Syracuse, and I don't want to talk about that.
As for the Boise St. game, my friend actually did tell a Boise St. fan she wants us to lose the rest of our games to screw their SOS. The next week after the JMU loss, I think I sent her a nasty text in my drunken rage.
This was a tremendous summary of the scrimmage and I appreciate you taking the time to run it. A couple of quick thoughts:
1) I still think that the biggest issue this year will be the defensive line depth. I feel like the starting 4 will be disruptive, but in order to allow Gayle to really pressure off the corner, the Hopkins brothers must play with high motor and command double teams. I don't question the Hopkins brothers ability to do that for 75% of the game. It is difficult maintain a high level at defensive tackle without getting the occasional breather, and right now, the only guy who may be able to give them one that has the trust of the coaching staff is a true freshman. That doesn't bode well. I am less worried about the backups at DE, especially with Zach McCray. Despite being underwhelming in practice, I see him as a high talent guy whose talent will shine once he gets on the field after struggling early to pick up scheme. *SEE BRUCE TAYLOR
2) I think everyone agrees that David Wilson is positioned to be a star this season. At the end of last year, he needed improvement in two areas: 1) seeing the initial hole 2) making one cut to get the hole. Those weakness caused him to take some big hits. If he hasn't improved in those areas, then his durability comes into question. I love Oglesby, but he would be the worst RB to start a game at VT since Lamont Pegues if Wilson goes down. The depth isn't there. If Wilson is better at making one cut and hitting the hole quickly, then I anticipate a dark-horse run at the Heisman. Nevertheless, I really wish Darren Evans was still a Hokie. They complimented eachother perfectly. Dear Shane Beamer. Star tailback needs to be the top non-DT/QB position in recruiting with any scholarships you have left.
3) I hope Logan Thomas comes around. I thought the Cam Newton comparisons were unfair, but he has a very similar skill set to Josh Freeman when he first arrived at Kansas State. Logan has to be able to get the ball out quickly and take advantage of the Hokies great skill at WR. This will open up the running game for Wilson.
4) The offensive line has to dominate early this season. I am really tired of seeing veteran groups struggle until they hit the meat of the ACC schedule.
