GT Vent thread - 2nd chokejob in as many weeks

This is ugly. This is probably worse than anyone thought this program would be this year.

We are guaranteed to finish with our worst record in 30 years after today's game. We cannot finish higher than 5th in the Coastal and our bowl hopes are already dashed.

Not great, Bob

Woof - just saw this. The 6 game losing streak is our longest since 1987.

Winning Percentage vs Penalty yards per penalty

Since i can't watch the game today I had some free time. So for the last 4 years here is a scatter plot for winning percentage vs yards per penalty. The idea is that if mental error penalties (false starts, illegal formations) had an effect on winning then we would see teams with lower penalty yards per penalty have a losing record.

However, there seems to be no pattern.

Just for completeness, here is winning percentage vs number of penalties per game

1st 2022 Committee Rankings

I would just like to point out 3 things:
1) The ACC has the most teams ranked
2) How is LSU #10?
3) Its November and Georgia hasn't played a ranked team in conference, TCU and Tennessee have played 4 ranked teams in conference.

Big 12 nears six-year, $2.28B TV extension deal

Deal is with ESPN and FOX. The part I am sure you are all wondering:

The overall value of the Big 12's media deal is expected to increase from $220 million annually to $380 million. That's an average increase in media-only revenue per school from $22 million to $31.7 million

YES that is after Texas and Oklahoma leave. $32 million isn't $50 million or whatever the SEC and Big10 are rumored to be aiming for, but it's sure a hell of a lot better than $17 million for the next 13 years. Jim Phillips better start brushing up on his negotiating skills or he will need a course on leading small conferences.

Week 9 Other Games Thread

Since nobody else started one, here I go.

This Ohio State-Penn State game is quite entertaining. Also, there was a discussion about preparing for offensive formations, and I see Penn State has been using the old-school T-formation every now and then today.

Coaching musings and PSU Transfers.

Having read several TKP threads last night I started thinking about the big coaching hires for VT.

Buzz and Fuente: both VT outsiders, both with head coaching experience, both with recent (at time of VT hire) success, though I'd argue that Buzz had demonstrated greater success than Fuente. (At this point, Fuente's success has a "flash in the pan" or "lightning struck once in the form of Paxton Lynch" feel to it.)

NCSU Vent Thread (no silver lining in this one)

Yeah, this one deserves some venting. This loss is 100% on the staff. We are 8 games into the season and we can't line up and run a play. When the HC and his staff are not holding themselves accountable for what is happening on the field a culture is not being established and a program is not being built. We absolutely should not fire Pry, but unless he makes some significant adjustments he's simply continuing the Justin Fuente legacy, albeit in a different way.

Bill Roth on the Sports Junkies (Oct 27)

I think this is the third or fourth time this season, about time all of us NoVa Hokie fans get a more regular diet of Hokie coverage... of course this wouldn't be happening if Lurch didn't have his kids in Blacksburg.

Hatin' On Dave Doeren

Dave Doeren likes to mimic his mascot's facial expressions.

Dave Doeren thinks that NCSU is the flagship program in North Carolina.

Dave Doeren is betting the farm on NCSU (-13.5)

Dave Doeren thinks that VT's offense is far too reliant on a star QB and that it's going to bite them when he goes out for the season with an injury.

Dave Doeren still cites Devin Leary statistics when touting his offense's prowess.

Pry-ssr Vulfpeck 2022

I stopped my takeaway list about halfway through the video. Pry gives a lot of good insight into the bye week and the coaches' adjustments and I didn't want to end up paraphrasing the entire press conference. Definitely worth a listen IMO.

Some takeaways:

2023 Football Roster Projection

Bored so wanted to look at the how the roster will change from this to next year, and what kind of improvement if any we can expect. It's been speculated that next year will be when the most roster attrition takes place, so I wanted to see how many players are leaving and how many could/should be replaced by the portal.

Not 100% sure but I believe we had 1-2 open scholarships at the start of this season. Looking at the roster I believe we will lose around 18-21 seniors and 5-10 current players to the transfer portal. I'll estimate on the high end of both.

Estimated turnover: 20 (Graduating) + 9 (Portal) = 29 New spots

2023 Class is currently at 19, I believe it will finish around 22.

Miami Silver Lining - Constructive (critical) Observations Thread

Another Fall Saturday and another reminder of just how far this Virginia Tech football program has fallen. I suspected that the post Frank Beamer era (not sure how long of an era I anticipated) would be a struggle, but I didn't think the bottom would fall out. We've all discussed ad-nauseam why we are where we are, but in the end it doesn't really matter. What matters now is how we get back up. So lets collectively highlight any silver-linings and constructive (critical) observations from the game yesterday. Below are a couple from me:
