Recruiting
Keep up-to-date with Tech commits and targets.
ESPN's Tom VanHaaren wrote an interesting article last year that I ran across this morning. It seems relevant given Logan Byrd's recent de-commitment. It's an ESPN Insider (http://insider.espn.go.com/insider/story?id=10714289) so I'll excerpt the major thesis. Most top quarterback prospects commit between April and July.

Much has been said about how VT has done in the 757. Below are the numbers and trends of 757 recruiting the last 10 seasons.
The main focus of this is where the upper talent of the 757 go. Just about any program can fill out their roster with 3 star players. Getting 4 stars and up are where programs separate themselves gathering talent. I also (Bitter sort of beat me to the punch), took a look into where and if the powerhouse programs have any college loyalty.

Jovonn Quillen Jr, a 6'2 180 pounder who plays quarterback for the Hampton Crabbers announced on twitter earlier that he has committed to Virginia Tech. 247 Sports does not have a rating for Quillen and lists him as an "athlete."

RichRod questions the need for a NSD
What are the pro's/con's to NSD?
How is the system failing currently?
- Uncommittable offers are just toying with kids emotions and Gamecock Blocking all the non-major programs.
- Junior year (or earlier) offers are required for all schools, which can commit a school to a player before their development is done and puts the kids in a position to need to decommit once the coaching staff changes.

I won't quote Coach Stinespring, but there were a couple of comments that he made in response to my questions the NOVA Hokie Club Recruit Night last night.
1) I asked about the safety spot. He didn't saying anything about any of the young players, but he did say that Chuck Clark was one of the best communicators on the team and that he was a prime candidate to move back to safety. He repeatedly emphasized how the rover sets up coverage and alley/edge assignments to the boundary and the free safety handles those calls to the field.

Even if you don't like ESPN you have to love them acquiring Five Thirty Eight and pushing them mainstream. I know this has been analyzed in other forum posts, but it is timely for NSD. Five Thirty Eight took a look at who is over and underachieving based on their recruiting class ranking and compared to Ken Massey's rankings.

Scrolling through my Twitter feed this morning, I came across a troubling quote about Kevin Toliver's official visit to Virginia Tech:
Virginia Tech may have flipped the younger Tolivers commitment with a simple, Hello. Even Tolivers father admits that he honestly thought his son would end up at Virginia Tech.
Then came the official visit this past fall. Virginia Techs defensive backs coach never introduced himself or spoke to the recruits mother, Stephanie Toliver, until the third day of a three-day visit, the elder Toliver said.
During a Sunday meeting with defensive coordinator Bud Foster, Stephanie Toliver called out secondary coach Torrian Gray, who also was in the room.

He is a " solid verbal" to TENN but More than 50% of the scouts say he will flip to VT. Anyone know where this might be coming from? Darrell has stayed strong to his verbal commit via his social media, but I would love to see him stay home and rep VA.

Unsure if he has a full scholarship offer, grey shirt or is a prefered walk-on.

Yes, I know it's Bleacher Report but this is one of their best articles in quite some time. Here is the link. Really interesting stuff, don't know anything about the kid but going by this article it's shocking to me that he doesn't have at least one offer.

Stay In-State and Do NOT go to UVA.
As a 4* you are incredibly gifted young men and are almost guaranteed to go pro, like your 5* bretheren (Every VA 5* recruit from 2003-2009 has found their way onto an NFL roster) During that same time frame, there were 58 of you. Only 31 have gone on to the professional level (including AFL, CFL, IFL, FXFL, and NFL practice squads)

It seems like Tremaine is every bit of the 6-4 the recruiting services have listed him at. I've been pretty adamant that either he or Xavier Burke will be slotted at DE to start their career and the littlest Edmunds sure has the frame for it.

I'm in class so I'm not going to go too in depth here.
247sports has been doing "Future Hokies" interviews (all worth a quick read) but Trevon Hill has stuck out for his responses. (LInk at Bottom)
I've noticed a common theme through the recruits and I think it reflects the coaches pitches to them. The main pitch I've noticed is simple. "Virginia Tech was recently good, now we've dipped, help us get back to that dominating smash mouth football."
We've all noticed Trevon Hill has great potential on the field, but this kid might be the spark in the locker room that this team needs.
