Let's GO!
HOKIES!
HOKIES!!!
Love what they're doing with the Draft-style production
These guys are just doing it better.
Class acts all around.
And they genuinely seem to be having fun with it all.
This kind of stuff makes me realize this staff might actually know what the heck they are doing recruiting wise
Wow. Style upgrade for sure. And Coach Cheetah posting it is a nice touch.
This production is pretty awesome and bringing out the VT big dawgs, regardless of reason, to do the "pick" is such a nice touch. Having guys like Adibi and Jones make the announcement, if that kid looks deeper at the program history, they'll understand how much it means to have them being the ones to welcome you on.
they should have alumni announce them next year...how cool would it be to have DeAngelo Hall or Brandon Flowers announce your commitment? or Edmunds, Vick, Teller, Settle, Royal, Bruce Smith, etc...
Sam Rogers to announce the PWO of the year.
would be good event for alumni relations as well...only problem would be it is during the NFL season
Auction off announcements to the Hokie Club to bring in some fat donations.
Good plan.
Here's the official VT signing day link:
Official VT signing day
That site is tight.... Love what we are doing to officially welcome the new Hokies.
Note the 30 slots on the draft board. Plenty of room for surprises!
Yuuuuup
I feel like this is the message every single year lol, but LETS GO
Do you doubt it this year?
I'm cautiously optimistic lol
To be honest I can't ever remember thinking that we were getting anyone new on signing day or the coaching staff acting like we were. I just remember thinking we knew the players we were getting and hoping no one changed their mind, which someone typically did.
Yeah I remember the past few years thinking we were gonna have surprises but not the good kind.
Hokies! Can't leave you hanging.
Dante Lovett's mom really deserves a staff position. She has been an outspoken recruiter all the way and she even posted a NSD video this morning. MVP mom for sure.
Does she have 3 more sons other than Dante. You know we would really....... Love it.
I'll see myself out.
All with first names starting with D and with NFL talent? The youngest being the best of the bunch??
Ba dum tis
Do not Google MVP mom!
LB Aycen Stevens has signed
OL Gabriel Arena has signed
WR Chance Fitzgerald has signed
LB Caleb Woodson has signed
And we fought off a late push from FSU to keep him. Norvell made a home visit in the past week and made a hard push to flip him, but Caleb said he was committed to VT and what Pry is doing here.
OL Hannes Hammer has signed
Hannes Hammer is a great OL name
That is awesome.
We could pass the time making up great OL names.
My proposal is Phil Apchak.
Dude already has merch...
Hannes Hammer
OL Layth Ghannam has signed.
That's 4 OL by 9 am.
Can't eat all day to get the beef packed on unless you start in the morning
Who doesn't like a lot of beef in the morning?
I saw this in the new comments and thought for sure it was going to be in reference to Dante Lovett's mom
I did my part by wolfing down a humongous sandwich from Kelly's Roast Beef @ Logan Airport an hour ago, with a cold beer of course!
My Favorite Highlight Video so Far: Chance Fitzgerald....he can cut across and bounce upfield. Got some wheels
Plays for Nolensville (TN) which is right beside us here in Brentwood, TN (both Nashville suburbs). Friends live in Nolensville and have been telling me all season how this WR had offers everywhere and was excited about VT.
And also saw we have a Safety commit from Cane Ridge (another Nashville suburb/area). Cool beans!
any idea on the "Surprises" ? Been trying to follow the recruiting thread but don't recall any new names on there
Stealing Kam Robinson from UVA would be super nice. FSU also rumored to be involved there, I think it'll come down to the wire
I don't think we stand a chance with Robinson. It looked like F$U may get the flip, but it always seems like he is trending back towards the bad guys. Hopefully he flips. Highest rated in their class.
FWIW he still hasn't signed on the bottom line with UVA so here's hoping. It would be a great surprise if he came to Blacksburg, but getting him to F$U also gets him outta Hooville.
Tony Grimes could be one, that has been rumored.
William Spencer has been mentioned as a DT candidate
Mose Phillips has also been mentioned as a S
Also seeing Teradja Mitchell and Antoine Sampah as LBs in the Portal
45 minutes since last signing...
via GIPHY
That guy 100% looks like a phallus
Reminds me of Narduzzi.
Krystian Williams is signed
DBU in the House
y'all I fucking love tables. Thank you for doing this
I live with a Buffalo fan, so I am historically used to watching tables be smashed, but TKP is teaching me how to love them.
DE Jason Abbey has signed.
Thomas Williams signs and is listed as a DB. That's 3 DB's so far (Williams, Williams and Lovett) with 3 more to join (Cotman, Fleming, and Johnson). Along with 3 Athletes any of which could also play DB: (Mitchell, Pennix and Heath)
(Personally I think Mitchell is a WR, Heath could play WR or DB and Pennix could play WR, DB or RB)
Idk about you, but I'm calling Williams Williams and Lovett if I need personal injury attorneys.
Tavorian Copeland has signed.
Received 4 high-confidence CB's to the good guys yesterday. Between the good guys, loluva, and gt.
Speaking of UVA they've got some Mozart/Bach shit going on in their videos which is hilariously on brand
And tweet written by someone who definitely know a lot about football 🧐
If it were on brand, it would be sad classical.
Or if it were REALLY on brand, it would be this:
Instead of violent hits it's violins hit.
Kyron Drones has signed
Takye Heath has signed.
That is 3 RVA2VT signees so far.
Really excited about him, dude is fast as hell and a baller whichever side of the line he ends up on
PRY SIGNAL IS UP
Pry bat signal mid signings????
Edit: little early but I'll drink
Pry just posted THE video on twitter. We getting a flip????
Darian Varner is a Hokie
He wasn't previously committed right?
Transfer from Temple
Yeah got that just trying to tie Pry's tweet to someone and I'm assuming this was him because he wasn't announced
Transfer from Temple
Edit: 🍻🍻🍻
I like all this:
Pry signal is up
edit:

I think you missed this by a bit...
Some of us have to work here
Chump don' want no help, chump don't GET da help!
Pry has looped me back into caring about recruiting. Now I NEED another "We're not done" gif from the 247 crew.
Varner is a huge pickup for this staff at one of the few actual positions of need on defense. LFG
Jonathan Pennix signed
While the **power isn't there, this is a fantastic class IMO. Pry & Co. raised the floor as it relates to football recruiting at VT and seemed targeted in their approach. Additionally the staff is finishing the cycle with a ton of momentum. I know we need to land "bigger fish", but I really love the trend so far.
Agreed. It was very encouraging to see the last round of guys pretty much all be at the top of the class rankings, in addition to their transfer portal additions!
Coney 2022
(Jeremiah Coney is signed)
Cotman has signed.
That's 5 RVA signees
I think Cotman is also one of the kids that Roc Carmichael has helped to train up as well. From his Twitter feed, Roc isn't just trying to funnel all the good ones to VT, but I am sure that he can help to guide them if they're on the fence as well.
The quality of play should be a lot better going forward. Definitely not looking to contend next year, but this is an excellent class that lays the foundation that the Pry Era is built upon.
Interesting little touch: for each recruit's magnetic card (and on the HokiesFB social media posts), it lists not only their highschool, but the player's head coach. Yet another small point that proves this coaching staff gets relationship building. Stroke those coachs' egos and establish those pipelines.
Marcell Baylor staying close to home. Signed.
Is there a VA area code Pry hasn't hit since he's been here?
Seems like he's trying to do his best to seal off the state with all the VA guys he brought it. I can appreciate the hell out of that. I know it's always going to be a battle for the top prospects, but he's doing a masterful job of laying the foundation and inroads.
Area code, heck. Is there a zip code in VA that hasn't had a recruiter stopping by?
They stopped at EVERY high school in VA at least once in the past year. Massive Virginia commitment.
Think it's planned for Johnson to sign last? He's clearly one of the leaders of this class, I bet he signs last
Jennings official per Andy B
Now VT too
WR Ali Jennings has signed. That's WR #6
On this day of 'Crootsmas, Coach Brent Pry gave to me
6 RVAers
5 DBUs
4 big road graders
3 Quarterbacks
2 Linebackers
And for once some normal sized DEs
Edit: If the meters don't work just right, don't blame me, I've been drinking since 7
7 o'clock cocktails
6 RVAers
5 DBUs
4 big road graders
3 Quarterbacks
2 Linebackers
And for once some normal sized DEs
RB Tralon Mitchell has signed
As of Noon, the following commits have not signed:
QB: Pop Watson
CB Cameren Fleming
S Braylon Johnson
TE: Ezekiel Wimbush
Gotta think Johnson and Wimbush are guarantees. The other two I'd hope are still in the boat
On the...ahem...flip side of things: all of the top 20 VA croots have already signed today except: Kamren Robinson and Jordan Bass, two players that VT have been a late push for (depending on what you're reading on the internet).
Edit: not arguing with you, just adding on to the topic of who has signed and who hasn't.
Robinson is a 6pm signee. All signs point to a flip between SCar and F$U. Highly doubt he's sticking with UVA, but these 17-19 yr olds.
Bass signed with Pitt this morning.
Bass signed with Pitt
Johnson just signed
Not going to embed all of these, but I just realized how fitting it is. Braylon Johnson was the 25th signing. He didn't wear 25 with us, but Coach Foster sure did coach with the guy who did. Not to mention tying the legacy and new signee together. That's so smart.
Now 25 in the boat, with positional breakdowns as follows:
QB: 2
RB: 2
WR: 6
OL: 4
DL: 3
LB: 3
DB: 5
That is a great breakdown of talent coming in spread all across the team. Would love an additional DL or two, but great spread and team of recruits.
I really want William Spencer a 6-5, 315 lb DT out of Indiana that has us in his top 2 with Kentucky.
247 has him rated 4*
Looks like he didn't sign an NLI today.
POP goes to Hokies
Pop Watson on the board
So 23/25, only surprise was DE from Temple? Any more late flips/signees? Robinson, Phillips and Grimes seem like possibilities. Anyone else on the radar?
Cam Fleming on board
Only Wimbush remains unsigned
The signal is up again?
Felton transfers in
According to his NSU profile, Shyrone Stith is his cousin
😏
Looking forward to seeing this Churchland Trucker TRUCK a few opposing DBs in YAC. Also, is it just me or does he look a little like Eddie Murphy?
Definitely looks like he could be Eddie Murphys son
Is the "FROM THE GROUND UP" after THIS IS HOME new for today or have I just missed it?
Also, did anyone else notice/get unnecessarily trigged by the missing space before one of the •'s? It is in ALL of the graphics and I cannot unsee.
They've been using #GroundUp as a hashtag online all season
Trigged?
I can't unsee it now. Thanks. :)
It's like the Patrick Swayze snot bubble when he is crying in Red Dawn.
So how many more transfers will we need for these numbers to work out?
After spring, VT might have open schollys. There is going to be a bunch of folks leaving.
So, I don't follow every team- Is the VT "draft board" room with the cheerleaders, hokie bird, video calls, all of the coaches, huge production etc. Is this "behind" other schools like we usually are accused of? Or are we ahead on this one? I think its awesome.
Bitter mentioned the draft thing likely came from Prys time at Vandy but this has much more production
Well hot coach Prime did their signing day with a bunch of coaches sitting around a conference table, so we've got him beat. I think this is both a definite upgrade over what we have historically done and better than most. I like it. Makes everyone involved feel the importance and significance of the occasion.
I think the WR room has gotten the message, with 7 commits
Last year's production was not acceptable.
Damn right. Small, no separation, etc. Get some dudes in here.
I think the QB room has gotten the message with 3 commits
Last year's production was not acceptable.
So was the year before, and the one before that
Assuming Wembush gets his paperwork in, I am feeling great about this class. Stealing a flip would be great but it is very refreshing to see the staff take care of business. There's no Ramon Brown or other VT verbal going elsewhere.
Handling our shit and closing things out is a refreshing change. Having a boring signing day which goes to plan is great. Adding Varner and Felton through the portal is an added plus. Pry and the staff really did a good job recruiting and getting guys who want to be Hokies.
NEW SIGNAL
Mose Phillips
Sounds like he was a "late bloomer" but his recruiting took off in the last few weeks.
The Raven is now a Hokie. May he learn from a Hokie turned Raven.
And with Wimbush that makes the 30 spots mentioned earlier in this thread. Anymore and we will overload the portal come spring to make room for all this.
Yeah and in the announcement by VT it said "To close the class" so I think it's safe to bet we're done.
Read on Tech Sideline Wimbush is now a PWO.
Interesting, was he always one? Numbers gotta work out I guess
Not sure. My guess is he doesn't need football scholarship due to his grades. Had a chance to go to West Point and Air Force Academy. You used to have a fairly fat GPA (in the early 90s) to get in either one. My GPA was anorexic.
I like Mose Phillips. Reminds me of Kam a little. On a side note, is anyone else expecting a late Pry Signal to end it?
That, or an announcement during one of the interviews this afternoon like he did last year.
I wonder where Grimes went?
I think the feeling on Grimes is he is going to let things play out.
He is a Transfer--they have several more weeks before the Portal closes again.
Pretty sure he had several more visits planned--USC is one of them.
VT is obviously in the mix, but I'm not getting my hopes up overly.
I thought I saw where he cancelled his trip to USC, did he reschedule? Last I saw it seemed like it was between us and aTm. There's some thought he might commit to aTm today, but he does have an official visit with us scheduled at the start of the new year. If he doesn't commit today, he's gonna wait until after the holidays.
I thought he was still going to USC but not Okla..its near impossible to keep track of this stuff anymore.
In any case, I think you are correct, if not today it will be 2023 before he commits.
I'm wondering if he isn't the end with a bang guy for today. Would be a nice finish to the day. Board had 30 slots and supposedly one hinged spot after the 30. Take Wimbush out of the fold with the PWO, and he would have been #30 today, right? Guessing (Hoping) Grimes is the extra spot when the hinge drops.
He's gonna be at A&M
Please tell me Wimbush wears #17 and occasionally gets the #25
Currently sitting at 33rd nationally, 5th in the ACC and 3rd in the coastal per 247 <--corrected
Not a bad start, but I still don't think we're selling "early playing time" well enough
That link is to the 2022 class, 2023 is sitting 33rd and 6th in the ACC
VT 247
Thanks for the correction. Looks even worse. Miami at #3 is scary. UNC didn't have a bad year either.
I think we filled positions of need, but we're really gonna need some superior coaching if we want to keep the guys we got and punch a little above our class.
Miami has always recruited well. Since 2010 they've only had 2 classes outside the top-20 and they've routinely been closer to top-10 than 20 with usually 1-2 5-stars a year:
2023 to 2010: 4, 13, 11, 11, 17, 8, 12, 22, 26, 12, 13, 10, 32, 14
Miami COULD be dangerous if they could ever find a competent coach, but they've demonstrated over the past decade that the U is not back.
I was thinking the same exact thing. Miami recruits well, just fails to do much with it. FSU has been in a pretty similar boat. Not getting as much out of their highly rated recruiting classes as they should.
Also, Texas A&M with last year's performance. I've always wondered if Fisher wasn't a better recruiter than a coach. Hopefully Grimes will wonder the same thing.
I'm sure the kids from the #1 class will be worth the money they paid, but whether they're all useful at the same time is the big question.
They are useful because nobody else has them
That's last year's class. This year they're sitting 34th nationally, 6th in ACC by composite. But I think the bigger deal is between last year and this year they've brought in 50 recruits with an average ranking equal to the rest of the ACC outside of the big 4 (Miami, UNC, Clemson, FSU). That is an impressive base to build from in the following years and hopefully will shortly end the idea that VT doesn't have Power 5 talent anymore. Obviously they still need to build elite talent from there if they want to compete for anything beyond a Pinstripe Bowl title.
That's for the 247 "total". The 247 average is still not very good at 86.35 (that is good for 8th best in the ACC). Great day, but still tons of work to do.
But hoos last in the ACC?
Darius Taylor signed his PWO papers
QB Room gonna be lit
About time!
So What would everyone say is the grade for what Pry accomplished?
Goals met?
Players targeted?
Instate foundation built?
Needs improved?
If the previous staff was a D..... then is this a C+? Or is it better? Is it a B to B+?
I give Pry a B plus. I'm impressed with the energy around recruiting, and the fact he made zero excuses. Some very solid players in the class and quality portal guys.
Considering the season we just had, I give it a 10.
Fucking Ten Billy Bob GIFfrom Fucking Ten GIFs " />
I dont know how to get that to work. Oh well.
Here you go.
Thank you. A quick Google taught me the error of my ways.
I agree. After a 3 win season, bringing in a class ranked in the high 30s seems like a big-time win to me.
The relationships with coaches and schools in the footprint I think will pay off big.
Getting the excitement, hate-to-lose, and leadership on the field will hopefully translate to good things on the field.
While we won't win 10 games next season, I think this is a really solid foundation, and if we can win 6-7 games next season, get a class in the mid to high 20s, that's progress and would hope to be at 8-10 wins the year after and a class in the mid to low 20s. That feels like the progression we can/should expect (to me).
If you just go by recruit ranking average, it sure doesn't look a whole lot better than Fuente's better years and Fuente's best year was better.
But, there is definitely a clear plan that's showing signs of progress and success. It's a first that none of the recruits flipped. The December momentum was some of the best ever in VT history that I can remember. And the enthusiasm from the recruits, their families, and the high schools within the footprint seems higher than ever. The visibility with the social media, the NSD website, the signing day draft party, and all the fanfare is greater than ever before.
This all comes back to Pry, the positional coaches, and behind-the-scenes staff. He made some really good hires for recruiting. Mines was a monster this year and I don't think that stops. Coach Cheetah also got some of his too. And the inroads in VA is super visible. They need to get better in the DMV, eastern TN and western NC to maximize that 6-hr footprint, but Pry and co. seem to be on their way there too.
Based on where they were to where they are now, it's overall a B. The foundation now needs to expand wider and the chips need to get bluer, but for the first time in seemingly over a decade, I'm following recruiting again because the recruiting news isn't "VT in top 3, Recruit chooses UNC/PSU/Alabama" or "Recruit flips to Vanderbilt/UMD/NCSU".
Regarding Fuente's best classes:
We haven't raised our recruiting ceiling yet, but we are raising our recruiting floor. Fuente's 2018 class was his best class, and he got to have a lot of those kids visit campus for a College Gameday showdown with Clemson. We started 7-1, played another primetime game against Miami, and looked to be a program on the rise. That class still only finished 24th overall.
Pry has us in the 30th-ish range right now and he had a very different program to sell.
Our on-the-field expectations should not sky-rocket after a class like this one, but I'm optimistic about our off-the-field production as our on-the-field production gradually improves in the coming years.
Lots of high 3-stars. A couple 4-stars. A QB on par with HH. I'd say this is a solid B.
Our recruiting ranking of 34th might be off. Ali is a 4 star and someone on 247 mentioned he isn't being factored into the rankings accordingly. We should be around 29th, but of course these rankings will keep changing until signing day. If a sub 30 ranking holds true until signing day, I think this staff killed it this year and has set us up big for 2024. I know I know we heard this all the time with the last staff but we have actually SEEN with our own eyes now the foundation that Pry and staff have laid in state and that will surely pay dividends down the road.
You're correct, but not in the way you might think. The "total composite" numbers don't mean a whole lot IMO. If you have more signees then you have a higher number. We are only #34 because of the size of the class (it's a pretty big class). If you look at the "average", those numbers are not very good. We are in the bottom half of the ACC - more on par with Wake, Duke, etc.
While I think the staff did a great job this cycle I am choosing to temper my expectations.
I look at it by how many players we got that we can use.
It's not about the worst player you got, but about the potential for fielding players. So having a lot of players rated over 86 does likely mean something.
This is a decent class, particularly given the number of wins VT had this year. Fills positions of need, develops relationships, makes VT a better team.
So no, from that perspective, I disagree. This recruiting class was not in the bottom half of the ACC.
You should temper your expectations, though. Because this is a rebuild that will take a few years.
Absolutely. This class is about not being in a situation where you have capable 1s but projects as 2s and somehow even worse 3s.
I agree with this perspective as we certainly "won" during this cycle. I think the staff accomplished exactly what they set out to accomplish. However the analytics are what they are... We can wax poetic about how this class was not in the bottom half of the ACC because we, as VT fans, understand the value that exists within the class. However the numbers don't lie - the composite average is in the bottom half of our league.
Fair, but I'd evaluate it against this lens/mindset. Even though it was in the bottom half of the league, where could we reasonably have expected our class to be, and did we meet, exceed, or fall short of that expectation.
I know people were disappointed with the record this year, but before the year started, I said I figured we'd win probably 2 games. So it was disappointing having some of the close losses, but honestly, I always tried to keep the 2 win expectation at the forefront of my mind.
Now, given everything we have heard about broken or non-existent relationships with HS programs in Virginia, our haphazard NC, TX, and whatever other 2VT hashtags we used over the past few years that never seemed to produce repeatable or good results, and our not great past couple recruiting classes, coupled with the fact that we only won 3 games this year, in addition to a coaching staff led by a HC and coordinators who are new to those roles, I would have guessed (I didn't make a prediction, but looking at it in hindsight) we'd get a class in the 40s to 60s range.
So, even though it was in the bottom half of the ACC, I think we exceeded what we reasonably could have expected with all things considered, and possibly exceeded it by a lot.
The coaches loaded this class with leadership and mindset, so it will be interesting to see how much that may pay dividends over pure rankings. It will also be interesting to see how well this coaching staff develops everyone we'll have going into next year and how improved our on-field product will be. It will also be interesting to see how well all those recruiting relationships pay off next year.
I know people can point to things like not having an offensive identity, lots of penalties, etc. etc. but stepping back, looking at the big picture of expected wins and expected recruiting classes, the coaches are exceeding the expectations I had. And even though we lost some close games, due to penalties or something else, means we were even closer to beating my expectations by a lot. And they went out and recruited the positions that were our biggest needs. A bad OLine, bad receiving, and not great QB play on offense - well, we went out and picked up receivers, OLine, and QBs on offense. Exactly what we would have expected given our on-field performance. How often in the past six years did we see recruiting results that mirrored what we knew we needed on the field?
How often in the past six years did we lose a recruit on or shortly before ESD? That didn't happen - quite the opposite.
Anyway, this is getting long, but this staff, while nothing has been spectacular, is exceeding my expectations and seems to be building a really strong foundation for the next few years. I'm excited to see where we'll be in 2-3 years, and keeping at the forefront of my mind this upcoming season, even if we don't win as many games as we'd like, I'm not expecting any more than 6 wins.
Also, absolutely not complaining about coach inexperience, just figure that would be one thing on top of those other things that might lead recruits to not choose Tech.
I think you and I are on the same page. I love what the staff did with this class! I am just choosing to temper my expectations and enjoy the process.
The numbers don't lie, but sometimes they don't tell the actual story.
Would I have liked some 4 or 5 stars to bring those numbers up? Sure.
Do I think we needed a lot of 86+ players across the board? Yes
Do I think VT got better talent-wise this cycle? Yes
Do I think focusing on an overall average that sums it up into one number is all that meaningful? No
Sometimes you need to look at the bright side of life. You're working pretty hard to make this a negative. It isn't.
The average doesn't really capture all of the context either. A QB touches the ball on every offensive snap, while you might have a variety of players who are there for depth or used situationally. But those two players are weighed evenly in an average composite.
This class was a solid first step towards where we want to be. It's not going to put us in the playoff. But it's a good first brick in the foundation.
Football programs are all about trends, and this is a step in the right direction.
Pry appears to be doing this the right way. From the ground up. Family. VIrginia. He's building something.
Relationships, relationships, relationships
Yes.
On this note, there was an article in The Athletic about Shane's recruiting approach at USC. He went about making solid connections with the HS coaches and programs in the state and while it wasn't immediate, it paid dividends for them this cycle. Got 3 of the top 4 players in the state.
Just a nice (and connected) proof of concept for anyone who's anxious to see all the talk about in-state relationships come to fruition.
It helps to have two big upsets too
all three committed before the season. But definitely helps to keep them committed to signing day.
